From the scenario you described, I would be pretty damn annoyed with these hippies thinking we give a shit about them and would open fire.

Real guns -> no way

Rubber Bullets -> hell yeah! Take THAT non-conformists!

Also considering I'm a cop I will shoot purely because it is my duty, if I didn't want to shoot people I wouldn't be a cop.

To not obey a direct order would cause more chaos to an already chaotic situation. If told to use lethal force however, that's where I'd draw the line.

Hey, shooting people doesn't specifically mean killing them!

If you're an american, your entire country exists SOLELY because of political protest. You also have written the right to protest the government in your constitution. Not only do you have the right to free speech, you have the right to bear arms against an injust government and form a militia.

So, if you answered 'Yes I would' for -any reason-, and you are an American, you fail history.

I'm Canadian, mind you. But we're generally cool with protesters up here, because how else do problems get solved other than by people pointing them out?
Is it a national past time of Canadians to lecture Americans on what constitutes proper citizenship of their own damn country?

In most cases I probably would due to the trust I would put in my CO, however, if I knew better then there would be no way.

I do it. You join the Police/ Defence force, you should be ready to fire that weapon you've been given. Otherwise they might as well give you a rubber gun and try and mallet them silent.

of course, I would only do it if that mob/protesters were resorting to violence. Rule of Australian Police/Defence Force, Only use force when you've been attacked, until then you cannot use any form of force.

If they're being destructive then yes. Otherwise I'd try to get them to move one way or another.

Not if it's a peaceful demonstration, but if someones stupid enough to throw a brick at a figure of authority with a gun they can expect a response in the form of hot lead.

For those trusting that the senior officers would not give the order without justification (i.e. the protest is becoming dangerous), please refer to the G20 protests last year and also Bloody Sunday in the seventies in Ireland. In both cases people died even though the protest was nowhere near a riot. Ian Tomlinson wasn't even protesting, just selling newspapers!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Ian_Tomlinson

Also, it *_really_* concerns me that "Yes" is getting more votes here. There is a big difference between a protest and a riot (look in the dictionary!). Lethal force is never really justified in either, especially if people are unarmed. Water cannon and a baton charge are pretty effective. I think the US'ians and Israel have that stupid sound gun as well, better than a bullet I guess...
