I'd go with the Heath Ledger one. As much as we're starting to run the whole "dark super-heroes" thing in the ground, Heath Ledger did do a fantastic dark portrayal of The Joker. Displaying a twisted criminal that wasn't a super-hero but just a guy able to pull the right strings and do the right things to do what he wants to do. Plus, he managed to portrayal the whole "Some people don't do it for the money, some just want to watch the world burn" concept brilliantly.

Then again, I'm probably not a good judge since I don't recall Jack Nicholson's performance. However, Heath Ledger's performance was so much my kind of thing, I think it'd be very hard to top.

I never cared much for the new Batman movies at all, I might be a bit biased, as the 89' version is one of my favourite films of all time, but being able to look beyond that, the films were still quite dull. No doubt Heath Ledger was a great actor, and he played his part well, too bad that his character just wasn't the Joker. Nicholson all the way, thankyouverymuch.

Heath Ledger, both the performance and the design are superior to Nicholson.

Mark Hamill - he had the right laugh for joker.
The new batman is to dark (not evil just very little light, I know batman hides in darkness but Come on)

sort of have always despised the Nicholson version, mostly because he was kinda scared of Batman and couldn't take a beating. Still the different movies required different Jokers. Even though The Dark knight has grown kinda stale and cheese on me I still love Heath's version of the Joker, he brought all the sickness, violents and really made Joker seem like a raging virus that spread madness, than just some ordinary sociopath.

There isn't a choice for Mark Hamill...

After that, Heath's final performance was also one of his best. The Dark Knight was an excellent movie, and Ledger was definitely a contributing factor.

I most emphatically agree with everyone who votes Mark Hamill. That man just had a way with laughter...

As far as the debate between Nicholson and Ledger goes, though, it's little more difficult for me to decide. I'm all for comic accuracy, and if that's my only criteria, then I have to admit that Nicholson was far closer to the mark with his ability to be both vicious and hilarious at the same time, for the Joker is nothing if not a "comic genius". That somewhat goofy flair was definitely something Ledjoker was missing. And the end of the 1989 movie, however, I still couldn't quite get past the fact that was Jack Nicholson playing Jack Nicholson with face paint and a happy attitude. If comic accuracy is not my only criteria, if instead I look at which Joker fits best into the world he was filmed, then I have to say Ledger wins. Yes, most of his popularity comes from the fact he died before the movie came out (thus denying me, YET AGAIN, my dream of a Harley Quinn in a movie), but his creepyness just fits Nolan's dark, realistic world far better than Nicholson did in the weirdness of Tim Burton's mind.

So, seriously, Hamill wins. That is all.

of course, ledger is winning...
but i like nicholson, maybe it's nostalgia, but nicholson was born to be a villain..his face is just made for it.ledger was playing the joker, but nicholson was playing himself. that's quite a feat.
