Where is the option for Cesar Romero?

As Adam West pointed out [http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/2008/06/tv-batman-adam-west-not-excite.html], the old series was actually Shakespearean. Not only that, but The Dark Knight was a bit crappy I reckon.

Heath Ledger, he played a fantastic joker, he seemed brilliantly insane and badass.
Too bad he's dead now, may he rest in peace, that man.

They're all good (including Hamill!) but really I think Nicholson pulls out in the end.

If we're talking Batmans (Batmen?) though, I'd have to say Kevin Conroy.

They are both excellent but comparing the two is difficult since they played two very different renditions of the Joker. Nicholson was more of a "straight out of the comics" Joker while Ledger played a "more realistic psychopath" Joker. That being said, I voted Nicholson but would have to agree that Hamill is the ultimate Joker.

It's a shame Nolan couldn't find a way to translate the Joker's sense of flamboyancy into Ledger's performance. Then I'd have even less reasons to dislike it. Mmmh, could you imagine? All the glorious chaos LedJoker created married to Nicholson's humor as he goes about his crimes? Add in a dash of Hamill's voice and Romero's ham and I think we've created the ultimate Joker for the big screen.

That said, I really have to vote Nicholson. I just can't shake the feeling that most people wouldn't be quite so "OMG, Gung-Ho!" about Ledger if he hadn't actually died or if they'd read more Batman comics than just the Killing Joke.

This poll is a travesty.
A travesty, I say!

The obvious answer is Mark Hamill.

Bonus: Henry Rollins does the voice of "Bonk" in this clip.

The way Jack Nicholson portrayed the Joker was truer to the franchise and it actually seemed like the Joker we've grown to love. He didn't seem like some pyshco who escaped Arkham, he was a criminal with great tastes and great class.

But Heath Ledger was simply amazing. I could end the sentence right there and it would be a valid argument because we was just so awesome. Everytime he was onscreen he was doing something insane and his acting was almost... hypnotic... This joker definatly had an erie feeling about him, like he could snap at any momment.

Tie.

Considering the fact that I grew up watching Batman: The movie again and again throughout my childhood I'm going to say Cesar Romero

Move over Lady gaga, this is the JOKER face.

EDIT: Why are the only two options Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson?

Both were brilliant but different Jokers and each work both capturing the Joker perfectly in a different way no one was better at the Joker. They were the best Joker they could be.

Mark Hamill by far. He may not have the look, but he has such a wonderful voice for the joker, it's amazing. Watch the first year episodes of the batman animated series, and you get a wonderfully twisted, somewhat sadistic, dementedly fantastic view of exactly what I think of when I think of the Joker. Someone with style, erratic nature, and a really twisted sense of humor.

I like the way you put it. Each actor fit in with the "feel" of the movie they were in. The two movies in question are so vastly dissimilar, that a more narrow comparison is needed that just "Which Joker do you prefer?" That's far too vague. Because, apparently, the Joker most prefered is MARK HAMILL (who unfortunately is not a choice. Get over it).
