Kill them. I didn't need to hesitate on that answer. From an isolated point of view, the options are thus:
1. Press button A, relief, guilt, life, guilt----->
2. Press button B, terror, death.
3. Attempt to escape (ideally) unavoidable situation, dehydrate.

I don't think that I would be able to override that will to live so readily... yes, true, some would just grit their teeth and quickly press button B before they can think about it any longer, I'm not going to claim otherwise.

But I think that most people would pick button A. What is life but an eternal struggle for survival? We are built with this mindframe, and it would take supreme willpower to ignore the natural urge to flee death.

All this said, it's very possible the guilt would end up leading me to my death anyway. I really don't want to kill ten people.

EDIT: And I really appreciate the obligatory few people with their condescending "Oh, these children, they don't know a THING about ethics, etc."

If you hate the philosophical threads, feel free to avoid them. No need to prove that you are better than us, we already get it.

And if not, I can use this thread as a pro-religion argument.
Don't flee, because it isn't like the argument would hold any water considering that nobody that has posted in this thread will ever be in this situation.

Besides, with a fictional scenario like this one, people can experiment with whatever fucking morality they want. Just like moral-choice systems in Games...

Depends on how long I had to decide, if I had only a few moments I'd probably do the horrible deed, if I had like a couple of hours I would convince myself to kill myself.

In the heat of the moment I don't know.

Huh.
It's the internet. It's all hot air.
Naw, its the human survival instinct.

Most people would curl up in a ball and hit neither button, the main flaw with this poorly designed ethics test.

Of those who didn't, a good number would pick each option in real life and what you might actually do would have little to do with what you would say today in your nice safe mother's basement.
I'm not in my mother's basement. I'm entirely by myself, living life by myself, with my mother not involved at all.

I want to say I'd kill myself, which would be the correct answer since whoever kidnapped and locked us all up must be doing some sort of test of humanity or something, and if I press the button to kill myself the actual result is that we all get to go home. And if I press the button to kill those guys then it actually poisons me and they get to go home.

But considering this like it's not fiction and that the kidnapper just gets off on people making complex moral choices that result in people dying, I'd kill those guys. Who knows, maybe they are rapists and murderers, and I know I'm not a criminal, so I'd rationalize it by just assuming they rape and murder and head home.

Well, if I was put into that room, there must be a way to get out. So I'd try and get out. If that fails, kill the strangers.

Break the glass if I can. If not, then there must be a way out. After all, I got there somehow. I won't be pushing either of the buttons.

I agree with Jamison 90, I've been through a few moments of death, and I feel no tears from death, just discus. Yes you may think I'm emo, but I'm not, I enjoy life, and committing a selfless act won't help you in life either. So yes I would press the button.

I am free of morality. I would not hesitate to kill them. it is the most basic instinct: survival. Everything else is idealistic wishy-washy feelings that do not matter in any way whatsoever. Now, if the number of people on the other side was larger, say 10.000 then I would certainly off myself. The lives of this many deserves a sacrifice, even if the sacrifice is the lives of innocent children or pregnant women or babies or whatever.

I honestly cannot see what is so wrong with that. This is not internet speech, I am being sincere here.

I'd kill them with no second thoughts, but feel like shit afterward. I can be pretty cold and hide emotions well, but killing innocent men isn't something you could Not feel bad about later even if you don't regret it. However, if the men were truly evil people like animal-abusers, rapists, and socialists I would feel absolutely great.

A real dilemma would be choosing to save yourself over several people close to you, or saving a single member of your close friends/family over a group of strangers. Willing self-sacrifice for a group of strangers just isn't something the average human would do.

I would get stressed out and fall asleep in the room. At that point I would probably tip over or have a twitch in my sleep either killing them or me :p
