Sometimes I feel like people who hate popular games are just doing so because they see it as the alternative to being part of the larger mass, for instance Halo 3, wasn't a horrible game (granted it wasn't amazing either) but yet people flame it for being a terrible game. The way I see it is if you have to "nitpick" to give yourself justification that a game is bad i.e "I hate Halo 3 because it's not as good as Halo 2!" then just stop trying to hate a game.
I think it has more to do with the fact that people manifest their hatred for the popularity of the game by hating the game itself. Like my example, I did not enjoy Dead Space. I didn't find anything interesting about. So of course I get a little ticked off when people insult my taste in games because OMG YOU DINDT LIEK DEAD SPACE?!

Just my theory on where all the pop game hate comes from.
I see where you're coming from, but I'm talking about the type of people who seem to just hate games, because "All the cool kids are doing it!" that sort of thing, I can't stand when somebody hates a game based on the majoritie's opinions.
Welcome to The Escapist. =) lol
Lmao, more like welcome to the world of gaming :p

any game set in WWO2 THIS PATH IS OVER! and the Final Fantasy series for dragging on for 10+ sequals
well, the games aren't actually sequels. FF X-2 is a sequel, FFIX is not a sequel.

but me, i don't like Halo, hate how everyone keeps telling me its awesome, i should play it, i should get an x-box, pay monthly to get to play online.

Hate is a strong word, so I'll catagorize mine.
Hate:
Fallout 3 (the aiming mehenism outside of VATS was terrible, no color, ect.)
Call of Duty 4: MW (lack of color, little replay value, plenty of timed missions)

Dislike:
Portal (overrated, on the short side, not too much replay value)
GoW (lack of color, but i didn't even beat the first mission)
Not trying to be mean, but I never understood this. Why do people complain about games not having color? Do you really expect a war-torn desert city or a post-apocalyptic wasteland to be colorful?
Well don't make a game set there then. Make a game that takes place inside a rainbow, at least it'd be fucking original (not yelling at you, just yelling at the mainstream games industry in general). I can't wait until I get the new Ratchet & Clank game (mum's getting it me for Christmas...wow, Yorkshire grammar sucks) and that's uber colourful

I can't get into Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. It just feels like you're skating around the map on rocket shoes, and the shooting sucks in general. Half Life 2 was bearable thanks to the story and satisfying guns, but these two games .. Ugh. And my friends act as if they're the be-all and end-all to FPS. Alteast they still play Battlefield 2.

Gears of War, Halo 3, and GTA IV were all fun when they came out but to me they just got stale after 2-3 weeks due to the reptitiveness. So I really don't like any of them now.

I despise Oblivion for working on my archaic old PC then not. Then I bought it for 360, but it eventually crashed and I had to delete all my saves to get it working again. And it won't work on my new gaming laptop. I'm an isolated case but I still hate the bloody game for it.

Doesn't hurt to add color, does it? I prefer more color because it's a game, and not real life. Color differentiates (sp?) the environments of the game world, too.

Can I just say that I hate fanboys and leave it at that? Because really, a game's popularity with other people doesn't affect me at all.

Except maybe Modern Warfare 1&2. Why are people so rabid over these games? Come on people, they weren't *that* good.

I did try it. My brother had the original game on the Xbox and I played through it, but I just didn't like it.

Guess it all comes down to preference... I don't mind colorfulness (which is an actual word!?), but I prefer the darker destroyed settings...

Modern Warfare 2 is the first game that comes to mind. I hate it to absolute death. I still play it, and think that it is fun, and however weird that may sound, I still hate it. I blame IW, they really fucked up a game with real potential..... but then again, Activision was involved, so I can't put too much blame solely on IW.

Other games include Halo 3 (the first two were great), and Gears of War.

Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. (I don't own a PS3, and thus have never played 4)

While there is nothing (technically) wrong with the games, I hate how Kojima has taken the games and turned the into his own personal soapbox to preach about how HE thinks war should or should not be done.

I also hate how absurdly lopsided the story/gameplay ratio. While I expect 8 hours of cinematics from RPGs, coming fron an action game, happening before or after a bossfight I may ormay not have to repeat because the succeeding section will get me killed is NOT. BLOODY. FUNNY.

I find it very hard to hate a game. Dislike it? Yes. Hate it? No.
I dislike Counter-Strike. A lot.

Half Life 2, now hear me out, the story does seem generally interesting but the vehicle sections are not too good, the levels look bland(ladders were hard to find but that's my bad eyesight not the games fault)and it was just not interesting enough to keep going.

Mass Effect,The characters were not too interesting, the combat was shaky, my teammates were always in the way and I felt like I was always running out of upgrade points too fast. Also the side planets I visited were lack luster, same goes for the story it just couldn't grip me.

Mind I don't have a burning hate for these games just a disappointed kind of hate

Mass Effect. I don't hate it though. I the story and characters because they're great (if a little unoriginal) but the gameplay is ASS.

The entire Splinter Cell series...it's too much hiding for me. I need to go out and be able to shoot someone and not have the mission end because my cover was blown.
