Ouch. Motion sickness, huh? Never had that issue. I've always been fine on boats, helicopters, rollercoasters, et cetera... Video games don't even come close.
I heared Source games cause more nausea due to their smaller field of view. Whether it´s due to having to look around more, or something else I don´t know for sure. But in later portal games, I think you can change the view screen from 75 degrees to 90 degrees. See if that helps.
While I do feel sick on flights from time to time (not every time, mind you), I have never experienced motion sickness in any way, shape or form. I don't count the times I got sick on a plane as motion sickness, because of other circumstances, like fear of heights.
I feel sick if I play a game for over 4 hours in a row or something especially if I keep dying oddly enough. So when I feel abit sick I have a break for a few hours watching tv and going on the computer or something eles.
I think I know the part you're talking about.
The part where you bounced up and down though portals?
Yeah, made me sick at first (and I don't get sick easily), but once I got the hang of it, not turning the camera around, and keeping my bearings at all times, it went away.
Portal didn't affect me until I got to lvl 19 as well. I didn't feel extreme nausea, but I knew I wouldn't be able to play for long.
Even though it made me slightly nauseous, no game shall ever trump Mirror's Edge on that.

This is exactly what happen, around lvl 18 or 19 where you have to go up platforms and to do so....
Don't click if you don't want to know how to beat that section (for anyone like my who still hadn't played this game yet)
...you put a portal into the platform you are on and into the one below. Then jump into the portal on the lower platform to send you shooting out of the platform you were originally on. Then get you bearings quickly to shoot a portal into the next higher platform.
I did this bouncing through portals for quite a while, as I found it hard to get my bearings quickly enough to shoot the next portal. Things went downhill for my stomach around about there, but I battled through until halfway through after escaping.
Don't get me wrong, I ran through the game in about 2 to 3 hours, so it was not like the portal mechanic was confusing, just obviously the moving through them....
In a lot of games, if i'm falling in game I sometimes have the feeling in my stomach like i'm falling in real life, or something similar to being on a roller coaster, it really depends how immersed I am.
So took advantage of the free Portal offer. Never got around to playing it until now; I know.... Great game and concept.
Was making great progress with escaping from level 19 after an hour. But then I had to stop playing the game. For the first time in nearly 30 years of playing games, of all sorts, I to stop for fear of barfing. Maybe I am getting old, but I have never felt so nauseous playing a game. I finished the game soon afterwards, but had to take a few breaks whenever the nausea got too much.
And yes the game was not running slowly or anything with 60 fps going throughout. This is the normal gaming rig I use and have never felt like this before, even with games using 3D glasses.
Anyone else had their stomach turned, by the mad orientation changes in this game? Will have to decide if my stomach can take the second one....
I remember being a kid and going to some family friends to play Wolfenstein 3D... there where 4 kids playing and we all took breaks after 10 min because it made us nauseous... on the plus side no one argued about who would go next...
