-snip- Also, Avenue Q was right.
Dammit, I've seen Avenue Q twice in London even though I live in another country, so this is slightly embarrasing. What did Avenue Q say?
What do you do with a B.A. in English,
What is my life going to be?
Four years of college and plenty of knowledge,
Have earned me this useless degree.

I can't pay the bills yet,
'Cause I have no skills yet,
The world is a big scary place.

But somehow I can't shake,
The feeling I might make,
A difference,
To the human race.

To answer your question; yes, I do. If you don't have anything to say that people can understand, then don't say anything.

I only get ticked off when they do it throughout a very long post. I use U's occasionally, but only on YouTube and in casual posts.

I'm pretty laid back about it. Of course I don't want "lol u shld hav cn it i pwn tht nub roflmfao" but since i leave so many things out when posting on the internet, I don't mind other doing it also.

I hate chat or "text" speak, and leet. I can never abide leet, but i can tolerate the other two on casual things like youtube.

altho i play WoW, where im used to hear alot of kids writing in some of the worst english EVAR, it can get annoying.

unless its a lolcat.
I think that the title was intentional...

Also, it looks like you could heed the advice of the OP

OT: I have always been an advocate of proper punctuation here. it just doesnt look right if you do it like this, and for some reason i think that speaking with grammar makes the person on the other end seem more... real. i dont know if that makes any sense but read the first sentance of my post and i think you may agree.

Above: messy.

I find it absolutely sad when I speak to guys in high school who still can't even spell properly.

I'm really getting tired of the poor syntax, grammar and overall language of the internet. I'm sick of the Us, the Rs and the pluralising with a damn apostrophe! To me it's just laziness. If appearance counts towards making a good first impression in reality, then surely how one writes on the internet contributes to first impressions on the Internet. Now, Gentlemen and Ladies, I AM NOT saying that perfect grammar and syntax should be expected 100% of the time, because that's just unreallistic and silly. Yes, I do use acronyms such as lol, brb and their ilk at times, but if you are contributing to a discussion, it doesn't really work. A bit of pride in your relations with others, even if it is the Internet, can't hurt, can it?

What are your opinions?

Thoughts? Comments? Queries?
My opinion is, I do no care as long as it is understandable without much thought.

I don't get overly mad about it, but text-speak, or 1337 does make me a bit annoyed. Being an English student will do that to you though, I think.

I agree with Megacherv. Typing in shortened speak has never been much of a problem to me. If someone types something I don't understand, I ask for an explanation. Simple enough. But I've only met one person who actually SPOKE this way. She is now on the top 10 of my list of "Oxygen Wasters", and should be neutered to prevent further morons from being born.

As long as it's legible, I don't mind too much. But if there's a complete lack of punctuation and capitals, as well as every third word abbreviated or with a number in it, it gets annoying. I try to avoid this in my writing at all costs.

It's not too bad in games when you have no time to type it out properly (I do anyway though because I am a fast typer) But in stuff like emails and msn it's stupid, because you have time to type it out properly but they don't anyway. And leet speak is just retarded.

You didn't seem to understand that dig at people who use them.

I only use abbreviations that are actually correct (like PSP, LHC, R&C: ToD ect.). Other than that I always type to the best of my ability. Half of the stuff some people say I cannot understand. But that's not the worst part...the worst part is...people who fucking say them...
This might help explain things:
Irony:
i.ro.ny
[ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-nee]
noun, plural -nies.

1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning:
the irony of her reply, "How nice!" when I said I had to work all weekend.
2. Literature.
a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention
or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.
b. (esp. in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give
full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., esp.
as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.
3. Socratic irony.
4. dramatic irony.
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
6. the incongruity of this.
7. an objectively sardonic style of speech or writing.
8. an objectively or humorously sardonic utterance, disposition, quality, etc.

Yeah, I couldn't resist the opportunity to be a smartass. People really need to stop and think before they post stuff like that, it just makes them look foolish. (No offense, Cristemo but you kind of asked for it. Think and understand the context of things before you respond)

At any rate, I am a self-admitted grammar nazi and the things that drive me nuts, other than the ridiculous amount of abbreviations on the net is when people can't even use simple spelling and grammar that we all learned in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

The most common ones that drive me (And every other educated person out there) insane seem to be so common as to be pathetic: Your/You're its/it's and apostrophes being put where they don't belong. Its not rocket science, people! Here, I'll let Bob the Angry Flower explain:

And:

I know the guy that draws this strip and if you think "I" have opinions? Hoo-boy.

Worst of all is people that type me as mii and other things like that. What the hell is the point of typing that anyway. Oh and, what the hell are peeps!?
peeps are the little bunnies and chickens that come out around Easter time. They are marshmallow and have a coloured sugar coating around them. And are amazingly fun to put in the microwave and then freeze :)

I think the "mii" for me came off of the wii because your character/avatar is a mii. I could be terribly wrong but I think thats what it is.

OT: I am not a big fan of using apostrophes when I should or always capitalizing letters that should be but otherwise my spelling and grammar are pretty darn good. Minus my liking the more British way of typing some words like colour :) And people who use internet/text speak annoy the hell out of me. I refuse to talk to some of my friends online or in texts cause of it. The people who really annoy me are the ones who use it in regular speak. IE:"I LOL'D so hard just now" really? Like I couldn't tell you were laughing, you had to tell me?

You're half right. The title was meant to be ironic. Do I have to explain everything around here or do any of you people have the capacity to think before you post? This is really frustrating when I haven't had my coffee yet!

well speaking as someone who uses these shorted works (not 1337 oh dear god not that) im not sure how to say this without looking lazy and stupid but i find it quicker and easier this may be because i generally struggle with spelling and grammar due to dispracsia (basicly leads to me making clumsy mistakes) so no i dont think you should base everyone over the internet on how they type for all you know there may be a reason for the bad spelling grammar ext.
