Like any genre, Rap CAN be good.

But, like any genre, the popular stuff is not always the best.

Personally, I like Public Enemy, N.W.A., Eric B. & Rakim, 2pac, Jay-Z, Gorillaz, Immortal Technique... even some Notorious B.I.G., OutKast, K'Naan, Nas, Wu Tang Clan, Lupe Fiasco, and Slum Village

1. I simply do not like it.
2. I simply do not like the attitude that most rappers seem to have.
3. I do like me some Eminem now and then, as long as the kid's not showing off.
4. No, I am not racist.
5. ???
6. PROFIT

I don't really have any specific reasons.
I just don't like that kind of music, I prefer hard rock.
I didn't know we needed reasons for our taste now.

No real need to get defensive. I think it's always good to analyze your reasons for liking or disliking something. You can usually verbalize it on some levels, although you are correct, at some level there's just no accounting for taste. People will like what they like because they like it. I hate metal. I couldn't exactly explain to you why I hate it. I feel it's often extremely wanky, but I dig banjo solos...so who knows.

I guess I dislike it because it doesn't have enough screechy guitars, if that helps.

Really, I don't know.
I could probably point to my upbringing (my father's a big AC/DC and Rolling Stones fan) or to my peers (I was introduced to various forms of metal and alternative rock by them before coming to hard rock).

I don't think taste has that much to do with conscious decisions.

If I could state one thing about rap that doesn't do it for me, it's the lack of real instrumentation (although as I've said, it's an absolute vacation to record compared to rock bands). I love the musical feel and texture of real instruments, it doesn't even need to be guitar for me, I actually just want real drums backing it up. Maybe a bass.

Because rap isn't actual music anymore, it's just one guy rapping with a bad "phat bass" rhythm playing in the background. Of course vocals are an important part of music but if you deliberately neglect instruments, melody and any form of experimenting with actual SOUND, just for the sake of emphasizing your lyrics then you're not a rapper, but a preacher.

Exceptions have been known to exist, but the last wild sighting of these was in 2001. All specimens since have been bred in captivity.
That is very untrue. Most top rap producers only use a drum kit. The rest of the music is created on actual instruments, not just an all-in-one keyboard/computer program. When trying to make something sound right (as opposed to just making sound in general), nothing beats the actual instrument.

When it comes to the actual rapping, they are supposed to be the stars of the show. It's their album, so it's only right their contribution is emphasized. Although, what you may be referring to is poor mixing by the engineer, which has been known to happen with rap albums. But if it's instrumentals you are looking for, there are plenty of rap albums released with a supplemental instrumental album of the beats.

RAP IS THE BANE OF HUMANITY! IT WILL DESTROY US ALL! IT TURNS US INTO GANGSTERS! IT ROTS TEH CHILDREN'S MINDS! THINK OF OUR KIDS!!!!!!!

Eh-hem.

I just hate it because it takes no freaking talent to sing. I mean, here's your basic rape structure.

*Beatbox* -Insert couple of Yo's or Heys- *Beatbox* -Hey!!- *Beatbox* - Yo, -run on crap about sluts- *beatbox* -whores, getting shot- *beatbox* -killing everyone and bragging about your gun- *Beatbox*

Okay, so, maybe its not exactly like that, but that's pretty basic. Its just not likeable to me.

By your definition, here's your basic metal/whatever offshoot it is that you're into.

*Distorted guitar*- Insert a couple of growls- *distorted guitar*-AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH- *distorted guitar*-some crap about satan-*distorted guitar*-more screaming-*distorted guitar*

Now, we both know that's absolute crap, so if you'd kindly stop the sweeping generalisations, we can all get along.

I was going to say you are officially my favourite person, til I realised it was probably my post that showed you it in the first place :p They've done an entire album like that, it's called The Hard Road- Restrung (the artists are the Hilltop Hoods). It's available on amazon, and is without a doubt my favourite album.

Only Cosby can answer this question with incredible gusto. And still make no sense.

Rap is alright. As long as the lyrics aren't harsh.

I don't Understand this at all. I hear a lot of people say that they hate rap because its mysoginistic and about violence and drugs and then they turn around and say that they like Eminem, an artist who has some of the most mysoginistic and violent songs that include drug references.

I mean I personally love Eminem but I just can't understand that mindset
Yeah I've noticed that too. Almost all of his songs are really aggressive towards women or are just really violent in general, yet people always quote him as their exception. Personally, I love him. I dunno, it never added up for me.

Because it perpetuates the stereotype that black people are criminals and only want money. It is also repetative and not very plesent to my ears.

I like guitars, drums, and singing that isn't simply talking along to a synthesizer. I'm sure there's good rap out there, but I haven't found it, and I'm not interested enough to search for it. It just seems to me to be rather lazy, and the high profile rappers don't help the image. I'll stick with Tom Waits, NOMEANSNO, Neutral Milk Hotel, Leningrad, and The Dead Kennedys. You know, bands with a modicum of talent that don't need autotune, use real instruments, and don't feel like talking about screwing bitches, partying with the homies, busting peoples asses with their gats, drinking courvoisier, killing cops, being badasses, etc.
You, Sir, deserve a cookie.

Not many people can mention Tom Waits, NoMeansNo, and DK in the same sentence, and MEAN IT.

Back on-topic, I've gone and watched the 'Rap Parodies' "I'm on a boat", and "I'm da Boss". It's depressingly similar to the rest of the currently mainstream hip-hop flotsam, except with slightly fewer actual bitches. Except possibly the yo-yo's singing/rapping/whatever-they-call-those-noises. And it's ALMOST less appealing than REAL RAP/Hip-Hop.

Almost.
I don't deserve a cookie for speaking the truth, but thank you anyway. It's always great to see someone with some taste in music, especially if they like NoMeansNo.

Something I noticed is that most "haters" against rap are as such because they go purely off what is seen on the TV, or what's heard on the radio. The sad thing is that there are some good artists out there, but they either get no radio play (either from them being underground, or from the label actually having a gag reflex), or are overshadowed by the "more popular" artists, such as Lil' Wayne's punk ass.

If you wanna listen to some quality rap music, I suggest listening to internet radio, and pulling up artists like Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, the Living Legends, Mr. Lif, and Jurassic 5. Their all Underground (save Atmosphere, they got picked up by Warner a few years back, so they're more like Overground now; I think Jurassic 5 are the same thing), but that's usually where you can find all the good stuff.

And to say that "rappers don't sing" or that "rap music lacks instrumentation" is a poor argument, and here's why...

The former? Of course rappers don't sing; if they did, they would be singers, now wouldn't they? And believe me, with the exception of K-os and Lauryn hill, you don't wanna hear these guys sing...

Also, by that logic, genres of music with no lyrics whatsoever - Electronica and even Orchestrated - automatically suck because, well, there are no lyrics to sing.

The latter? That statement shows how the vast majority of you all don't realize just how versatile the rap melody can be. A song by The Game features a piano that only plays 2 notes. Simple, but effective. There's an old Wu-Tang song which uses violins for it's melody, and they go ballistic towards the end of the song (when the solos kick up). An old Ludacris song needs little more than a set of timpanis (sp?) in order to be faithfully recreated.

Subject matter is another big deal, as there are or can be songs chock full of references and metaphors (some better than others, of course). In fact, rap music probably has more references to video games than any other genre of vocalized music (nerdcore rap notwithstanding). Generally speaking, references can range from astrophysics, to contemporary art, to Aqua Teen Hunger Force, to Tekken 3. Listen around, you might be surprised.

It's past my bed time, so I'm out this piece. Oh, and merry dammit Christmas.
