Also I first read the title as "Rape Music"
Is there a song that fits rape? I mean like a scene where someone's getting raped, can you think of a song that would fit such a scene?
Most definitely, Singing in the Rain

I love how people in this thread love to generalize and say things like "Good rap is extremely rare." No it is not. You are just not looking for any good hip-hop. Also, it is bullcrap to immediately turn to lyrical content for musical quality. There are plenty of rock and metal songs with lyrics that are objectionable or just don't make any sense. The voice is just another instrument, and the meanings of the words can be ignored as long as the words sound good together. I'm not saying that 50 cent isn't crap, but I am saying that people shouldn't shut themselves off completely to a great genre.

A few artists I enjoy:
Aesop Rock
Talib Kweli
Mos Def
Busta Rhymes
Lupe Fiasco
Jurassic 5
Slum Village

And if you like sick beats:
J Dilla
Flying Lotus

That's what I'm talking about!

And I'm pretty sure I mentioned Aesop Rock somewhere in there, as well as some of those on Raykuza's list. I'm not sure though, it's been a long night.

For the longest time I absolutely hated Rap. The popular artists acted like idiots in public, the lyrics seemed to murder the English language, and the kind of life it advocated just seemed wrong to me. However, I got curious one day and went digging for a new style of music to enjoy (you can only enjoy metal for so long before it all starts to sound the same). I ran across some rap songs and actually sat and gave it a listen. I started to find my taste for rap. Now I like quite a bit of rap, though I don't really have a taste for 'gangsta' rap.

On a positive note, a lot of the 'gangsta' rap that I don't like actually have pretty good beats. That is to say, with those songs if I cut out the lyricist I would find something to enjoy. Of course, when you cut out the lyricist it isn't really rap anymore is it.

Include money and cars and that sums up the whole genre.
Don't think I can agree with you on that summation of a full genre.

Then maybe you should change the rap you come in contact with. And I'm sure you personally don't know all forms of Rap, much less enough to make a judgement call about them. And like I've exampled before, the "[Genre] is partially/semi/mostly/completely about [simplified topic]" argument can be applied to anything.
Faie enough, but I don't have much of a say in what people are blasting out of their houses, cars, etc. This is beside the fact that I have a bit of a problem tuning it out. Yes, I know not all Rap is needlessly aweful, it's just the stuff that I'm practically forcefed on a daily basis. Yeah, yeah, I can ignore it, blah blah blah. Like I said before, not all Rap is bad. Simply put, I just never cared for Rap really.

I don't hate rap as a whole. But I simply despise "Gangsta Rap" with every fiber of my being.

Aside from that, rap is just not my preferred genre of music.

I like metal, so rap isn't really my thing. However, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate some rap (pretty much just Eminem). I just get tired of hearing about money, bitches, niggas and how mean cops are. Not that all rap is about that and not that every genre doesn't have stereotypes/recurring themes.

I like some rap music but not most. I'm not entirely sure why I like some and not all. There are only about two or three artists I like. I can understand why people dislike rap music; it's just not for everybody.

Well, it really contains little that attracts me about music. Minimal (if any) melody, repetitive percussion (typically sampled or synthesized), little to no actual vocal talent, and generally uninteresting (if not grotesquely stupid, violent and misogynistic) subject matter/lyrics. NOTE: This refers only to what I've been exposed to (i.e. the mainstream) not the genre as a whole.

That said I don't actively hate it. I hate the fact that its shoved in my face everywhere because the record companies know that it is selling right now make sure people hear it everywhere. I also agree that, for the most part, it isn't actually what I would consider art because it requires little to no craft, skill, ability, etc. and is nearly totally devoid of any meaning or real emotion. Can a rap song really express the range of emotions other genres are capable of without melody or actual singing? I think not.

That said, I like the Gorillaz as well as K-Os but they both contain elements of multiple genres that I already like as well as a tendency to record with live instruments and are actually musicians. So they don't really represent the genre as a whole at all. Although I wouldn't say I like them in spite of their genre, it isn't too far from the truth either.

In brief, I don't hate the genre as a whole. What I do hate is the dominant sub-genre (gangsta rap) and the vapid commercialism, violence, misogyny etc. that defines it compounded by the way it is being pushed on us all the time.

It's funny to see all these people who believe rap is just "gangstas". It would be like if I were to say all rock might as well be emo because that is what seems to be all the rage these days. It's a subgenre.

I can understand why some people dislike it too and I have hundreds of rap albums. I just wish more people would dislike it for more than just the bullshit the radio plays because the genre goes much, much deeper.

Gangsta rap hasn't been popular since 2pac was murdered. What you are referring to is club rap. It only appeals to women when they go out dancing in nightclubs.

Try these on:
^These guys (The Roots) actually play instruments^ (And I just realized how bad the screenshot looks to prove all rap music isn't about criminal stuff and bitches. Don't worry, they are making fun of it too.)

the day guru and primo get back together is the day hip hop is really gonna resurrect. but this seems unlikely at the moment. i think the main problem is alot of mainstream hip hop is being blended with house techno stuff cause anything clubby is wat the record companies wanna push

Plus I can't really get over the whole fact that there's usually no singing in the rap songs I have listened to. If music has lyrics then I want to listen to a talented vocalist, not some dude talking.
Yeah I'm a big fan of good, conscious rap. You might be interested in this mans music (because he sings ;))

Mainstream hip hop these days is fucking awful. It's very rarely even hip hop, it's just auto tuned choruses sung by other semi talented artists and really bad versus. People like Lil Wayne and T Paine make my skin crawl. Can't stand them. That isn't to say that all hip hop today sucks, it's just mainstream hip hop sucks.

90's hip hop was awesome. All of it.

Here is a Modern Hip-Hop artist who is an example of what Hip-Hop should have evolved into. Rather than that mainstream nonsense.

One of my favourites, he's a Canadian, so any of you who may be prejudice towards Canadians and therefore will hate it simply because I've told you he is Canadian be aware!
Cool he sounds like he should be on the albums of the old outkast.
Observe, the OLD not the new ones.

And sitting here and reading thru the thread i get so impressed by the stupidity some
people have. That 50 cent is gangsta rap, yeah on what planet. And as so many have said, everyone seem to listen to the mainstream music and think that The Game rule gansta rap.

Note: 50 cent and The game isnt more gangsta than Martha Stewart.

Actually you'll notice I don't reference any specific songs. I don't reference specific artists. You're making the exact same generalization the other guy was making. You're assuming that mainstream hip-hop (i.e. what gets radio play) is the golden standard by which the entire genre is judged. You are discounting most of the hip-hop genre with your statements. Not just one song, not just one artist I mean most of the fucking genre. I'm sorry, my point stands. You have made one of the most common misconceptions about hip-hop out there.

I recommend Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip as well, really intelligent, hi-hop with meaningful lyrics and nothing about guns, bitches and bling.

I like rap but only a few certain artists and songs. Eminem would have be the main one that I like. His stuff is just simply better than most other rappers I hear in my opinion.

I have a pretty broad music taste, I like some rap music, like Eminem, and I like rap metal as well. The only kind of rap I don't like is where they're constantly banging on about "Beetches" and "getting capped".
