Average rap song:
"Hey Yo, yo, I just shot my *****, lets get high, yo-yo."
Not pleasant to listen to.

I cant believe that you can say jazz doesnt do anywhere. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EZwX_7L_1s basically proves you dead wrong, and i can keep on going all day about songs jazz songs that go places.Gildan Bladeborn said:This, for the most part. Rap isn't really singing, and when you compound that with how most rap is about things I can't relate to whatsoever and features terrible backing 'music', you end up with something I'm profoundly uninterested in.PoisonUnagi said:Because there's no music in it. Your title is incorrect.
This is not to say I loathe rap universally, I just don't much care for the genre as a rule - there are a few artists/songs here and there that verge into rap or utilize it along with other stylistic forms that I don't mind, and while I don't love nerdcore I at least find it hilarious.
At the core, I think the reason I don't like it is that it doesn't really go anywhere - something a great deal of popular music from a plethora of genres is equally guilty of. By not going anywhere I mean that if you were to chart the ebb and flow of the song musically, what you'd get is essentially a straight line from start to finish, a musical landscape devoid of chasms or soaring mountains, something the vocal delivery of rap does nothing to help with. I can't stand club jazz for much the same reason - in my mind, it's a musical journey consisting of running in place for a while.

I do listen to some clean, old school Eminem (not that crap wheres hes gallivanting about as "slim shady"). That's the cream of the crop in my opinion for the genre.Jark212 said:I hate rap where there talking about is gangsters, violence, and bitches...
I'm pretty sure the difference is that Hip-hop is an entire cultural styling incorporating Break-dancing, beat boxing, DJing, rapping, graffiti and... I think that's it. Rap is just a component.x0ny said:I googled the difference between rap and hip hop, and answers mostly sum up to mean there is no clear line which separates the two. I'm not into either, but I've liked one or two songs from one of those genres, whichever that may be.
Run DMC - It's Tricky
Run DMC and Aerosmith - Walk this way
Run DMC - It's like that
MC Hammer - Hammertime
Yes, and that is the reason why I said "Or the style of music doesn't appeal to them, which is fine. But if it doesn't appeal then it doesn't give an excuse to hate."Kamaitachi said:I don't intend ANY offence, but did it occur to you that the music simply might not speak to them?ChromeAlchemist said:Either they hear mainstream hip hop music (which tends not to be the cream of the genre) and hate it, or they hate 50 Cent and thus hate the genre, or they haven't given it a chance and hate it, or they just hate it for the sake of hating it, and those people (the last ones) well...
Or the style of music doesn't appeal to them, which is fine. But if it doesn't appeal then it doesn't give an excuse to hate.
There are more examples, but that'll do.

I'm glad I got some new artists to listen to
For anyone interested, try out Aesop Rock, Immortal Technique, Lupe Fiasco (Who is surprising still rather underground), Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Zion I, Mr. Lif, and Jedi Mindtricks.
I'm in agreement here, I can also see why the genre gets a lot of flak, it's one of the most profitable genres in the industry, and thus in everyone's faces. But what people see, seem to think represents the genre. Lil Wayne's rhyming style pisses me off also.clairedelune said:I love a lot of rap music, and hate a lot of it too.
I love...
A Tribe Called Quest
De La Soul
Atmosphere
Biggie (he's just fun)
OutKast
Eminem (some, not all)
Lupe Fiasco
Saul Williams
of those the main one I really love is Atmosphere. I'm sure either none of you or very very few of you know who they are, but they are a very different kind of rap/hiphop and I really love it.
I don't like lil wayne (he rhymes 'me' with... 'me.' Why. Why would you do that. Not just once. All the time) or soulja boy, or most of the party rap/club stuff that gets a lot of radio play. I can totally understand why rap gets a bad reputation. However, I'm really happy to have found rap artists/groups that have a little bit more substance.
See, this is why I miss Tupac. He rapped about the real meaningful stuff, not like the BS we have today.rayne117 said:I agree!Jark212 said:I hate rap where there talking about is gangsters, violence, and bitches...
We should rap about how our mom will take away "TV time" if we don't do the homework assigned to us.
Does that suit your gentle needs?
