People's lives have gotten progressively easier. Instead of having to hunt their food down, they can just obtain food from the corner market. Instead of having to walk to that store, they can drive. Instead of having to shift gears, they can just put it in automatic.
And yet, people are still angry and unhappy. Making life easier will not make people's lives happier and more satisfying; in fact, it might make it worse.
Red tape can be eliminated with the streamlining of our current government. Give it less things to govern, as my political ideology would dictate, and things will become even easier to accomplish, as the government would have almost no hold on the individual's life.
People have always hated authority throughout history.
Not everyone is unhappy or angry with their lives and even the people that are don't always take it out on others.
I guarantee that 90-95% of the population are truly happy with their lives.
Saying that people hating authority throughout history does not bode well for an Authoritative government.

All I have to say regarding these is EPIC WIN!

Unfortunately, Canada isn't the UK and I doubt something like that would be made legal here.
It's just as legal here as it is there, it's not even specifically available in the UK, that's just a UK article. It's a Chinese company and they ship worldwide.

As a fellow Canadian, mine shipped yesterday :p

Here's the thing though, the armed forces > Untrained civilians with weapons.

Active members of the Irish military forces: ~10000 (Ten Thousand)
Population of Ireland: ~4500000 (Four Million, Five Hundred Thousand)
Ratio: 450:1

Let me know how well that works out will yea.
That is of course assuming that the entire population of Ireland would all attempt to fight the government/military.

Quite a mighty assumption you've got there.
Also take into account that the civilians would take much heavier casualties than the military, and combined with propaganda campaigns many people would probably quit resulting in the revolution collapsing.
Look at the history of armed revolutions... they rarely succeed.
Although if the civilians had light sabers that could cut through blast doors that would improve morale and immensely even the odds :p

OP... WTF!?! I hope the people buying these things are smarter than the idiots who decided to sell them.

But this one seems like it's designed to be a weapon...
Yea, but you must remember that the vast majority of modern technology/tools/etc was either originally intended, or evolved from something intended for violence. Throughout history, the single largest driving force behind human innovation is war.

And beyond that, if someone wants to do harm to another, it's not gonna matter what tools they have access to. They're just gonna do it. It would not take a huge amount of effort to create a situation in which you could harm another person.

Did anything come up yet about the power capabilities of this thing?

As in how long will the battery last?
I'm thinking the first use of it will go like this..

*Holy crap, I have a lightsaber, let's turn it on!

*2 seconds later*

*Well, that was fun! Now we'll have to charge it overnight to use it again!*

Methinks this is not going to work as advertised...

Oh great, laser gangsters. I was hoping we wouldn't have to deal with those for another few hundred years.

At first I thought, "Holy FUCK, I have to get one!" and then I thought, "...another addition to the list of Worst Ideas in History." This can't end well. It just can't. And it wont.

This thing is actually fairly terrifying. It apparently causes immediate and permanent vision loss. So basically a stupid kid gets the brilliant idea of point this thing at someone and boom just like that instant blindness or even worse someone deliberately points the thing into a crowd and blinds a few dozen people. Call me an alarmist but I'm fairly hard pressed to think of a stupider idea than offering weapons grade lasers to the public.

Laser pointers this powerful are already banned in my state, with something like a $10k fine for being in possession of one. Can't really see that stopping terrorists though.

Uh, yeah, how is this even legal?

These things are apparently noted for inducing permanent blindness and melting skin...

A real lightsaber has hit the stores in the UK

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100616/tuk-deadly-star-wars-lightsabre-sold-to-45dbed5.html

A handheld laser likened to a Star Wars lightsabre and so powerful it can instantly blind and "set fire to skin and other body parts" can be bought online and shipped to the UK.

The device - with a beam 1,000 times stronger than sunlight on the skin - is touted by makers as "the most dangerous laser ever created".

Trading standards chiefs said they were "seriously concerned" about the sale of the model and have warned against its use.

real lightsaber...yes please!

more info from the actual store here

I see a new southpark episode with them coming soon lol
Dude, this isn't a lightsaber, it's a laser device. Which is quite superior, after all, hokey religions and ancient weaponry are no match for a good blaster at your side.

just a question:

what if a group of people, lets call them "terrorists", will each buy this device, go into a place filled with people, and just go nuts?
shit hits the fan, i presume?
How about a more pertinent question: what happens when a group of people, lets call them "Army" straps a 100 of these to a gunship and just goes nuts?

and here is the where the real fun begins: with weapons grade lasers cheaper and as effective as normal fire-arms, how long do you think we have before we have running lightfights down our city streets?

These lasers have added 'benifits' for criminals:

the beam you are using to melt off your enemy's face from down the street completely silent and invisible.

no traceable bullet to tie you to the crime. there is absolutely no way of determining for sure weather a certain laser killed a certain person.

basically they are the perfect murder weapon
they'd have burn marks, so they'd know it was a heat source, and if there's a group running around with them, they'd be pretty obvious.

This worries me a lot...what if my Physics teacher gets hold of one? He has access to diffraction gratings so he can create multiple beams of DEATH!

EDIT: I can imagine someoneusing it to replace the laser in a red-dot sight and it burning through...I don't know why, it's all this military talk...

"It ain't workin'! That them glass is awl meltey!"
