No civilian should have access to weapons!

Because any civilian can't create home-made deadly weapons out of materials you couldn't possibly ban.

Sounds like a boring toy, anyways. It's not a lightsaber as lore goes, and if you really want to blind random people (commercial pilots included) you can use laser pointers and cheaper-then-140 bucks alternatives to this "lightsaber".

The only "lightsabre" resemblance is with the hilt. Aside from that, it's just a high-powered laser. Sure, you'll sell a few units to the fan boys and the idiots who think it's a real lightsabre, but technology like that shouldn't be wasted on the masses. It should be put to proper military/industrial use (but mostly military - I mean, could you imagine using that as a direct-fire weapon, or even with CQC?)

I wouldn't mind getting one myself, though to be honest, I can see the issues that would arise if that got into the wrong hands, so perhaps banning it from civilian use would be for the best.

I've always been interested in a real life lightsaber, but after reading the source that the op posted. I feel worried for both my safety and the safety of others. I mean could you imagine being mugged by someone using one, not to mention the other dangers, such as blindness, burnt skin, cancer and so on.

Normally I have no problem with people owning weapons,provided that they are mature and sensible enough. However this seems to be a bit much, so in my own personally opinion and as cool as it may be I do think they should be made illegal.

Plus with so many idiots running around the the world, a real lightsaber just doesn't appeal to me.

I'm not concerned that they've made this laser. I'm not concerned that it's being sold to the public.

But even before this particular laser came out, I was highly concerned that this sort of thing could be sold to anyone at all: it should require licensing, just like any other lethal weapon.

Those applications you mentioned do sound neat, but your argument is invalid because kitchen knives, forks, fists etc don't burn inanimate objects and irreparably damage living tissue from a distance. It's not the same thing, and you are seriously deluded if you think otherwise.

fuck, when i first saw this i thought it was going to be cool. This actually seems quite dangerous. First of all, it isn't a sword shape, it's just a laser beam. A laser beam goes basically until it hits something that obstructs it. This is basically a firearm that doesn't have to reload, has no time between rounds, goes on forever and burns shit. To sell this kind of thing at such a low price to the general public is probably the worst idea I've ever heard. Basically, this.

How about a more pertinent question: what happens when a group of people, lets call them "Army" straps a 100 of these to a gunship and just goes nuts?

and here is the where the real fun begins: with weapons grade lasers cheaper and as effective as normal fire-arms, how long do you think we have before we have running lightfights down our city streets?

These lasers have added 'benifits' for criminals:

the beam you are using to melt off your enemy's face from down the street completely silent and invisible.

no traceable bullet to tie you to the crime. there is absolutely no way of determining for sure weather a certain laser killed a certain person.

basically they are the perfect murder weapon

Although on the subject of the army using them, that doesn't really seem like such a bad idea. Would certainly speed up wars and make them cheaper, and pretty much the reason we're in a recession is that we've been in a very costly war for prolonged period of time.
