I'm initially against younger games that are obviously for 'Mature' players. I do not agree, however, that the age in which a person is deemed mature is necessarily 18. I know many 14 or 15 year olds who are very mature. Not knowing the difference is bad parenting.

PLEASE, PLEASE let this kid grow up to be a lawyer or a teacher, just so we can put the final nail in the coffin of errors that is the "Video games influencing violence" excuse that so many bad parents turn to.

It honestly kind of pisses me off how overprotective my parents are, and I'm against your view. I think if their parents let 'em play the games, then it's their decision. Actually, if and when I have kids, I'm going to let them do kind of whatever. Do your parents have a lot of restrictions on games, music, etc?

Yes. It just makes me want the worse things more. Stop making a fuss about it and kids will just get used to it instead of thinking its some super special thing they're not allowed, thus wanting it more.

The forbidden fruit is the one that tastes the best, or something along those lines.

You're unhappy with the fact that a 9 year old was permitted to play a bunch of M-rated games, but if your profile is to be believed, you yourself are below the required age to play those games. Hypocrisy much?
That is beside the point, however, as ratings are completely irrelevant. It's up to the parents to decide whether they trust their kid(s) with playing such games, and it doesn't make them irresponsible if they do.

It is true that parents need to take responsibility to not let their young children play M rated (or higher) games but truth be told the youth's perception of 'coolness' is usually based on what the slightly older generation percieves as 'cool' as a result they will inevitibly play violent video games just as much as the older generation or at least be inticed to do so.

I don't think it'll warp their minds, but parents who complain about mature content in games doing so need to be more responsible about what games they let their kids play.

My theory anyway.

I played gta when i was that age..
and im a soldier.
So if anything, violent video games are saving your ass.

Why is it acceptable for games to include & reward violence, sexual aggression & use of narcotics when these are illegal in real life? What ever happened to common sense! These games are clearly a receipe for a troubled society, especially when I know of several parents who allow their 10yr children to play them.

OT: I'm going with my parents' opinion on this. If the kid can handle it without getting too into it, too crazy about killing, it's fine. But I would think to keep games like Prototype, or other games where there's absolutely no penalty for killing hundreds of innocent people by choice, out of young hands.

well i did the mistake of letting my 3 year old son play beat'um'ups now he shouts "round one fight" before he hits you.. but at least it keep the little man out of da way for a while. (might move to raceing games next, hope he done take the car)

I don't buy the argument that games lead people towards violence, but at the same time I don't buy the idea that blood-soaked mature games don't have any effects upon the young minds that play them either. My cousin who is 10 years younger than I am (I'm 22) was exposed to a large variety of violent games and films when he was young, and it ended up giving him nightmares and a rather... warped view of history due to how some games depict certain villains (aka, Nazi's).

Just my opinion though. I didn't play my first M-rated game until I was ~14 (Half-Life), but that was a personal choice of mine and not the work of any parental enforcement.

I mean, really, most teen rated games are fairly tame.

Mature rated games hit a bad gray scale. A proper horror game like RE4 and Eternal Darkness gets the same rating as a game that has you indiscriminately killing like in the Modern Warfare games, or one that flat out glorifies it like grand theft auto. Wat?

Eh. It's not so bad. Yes, technically the parents shouldn't be letting him play those games. But I mean, I can think of worse examples of parenting. It's not like he's being emotionally or physically abused. That would be unacceptable. Besides, maybe the parents know he's a really mature kid and won't be affected by it.

In any case, I'm disappointed by the kid's list of favourite games. A bit predicable, perhaps.

But really, I don't see a problem with it. In my experience, kids act with similar intentions regardless of what medium they use to express them. In other words (which are not actually my words, though I don't remember who's they are), if you take a kid's toy gun away, he'll pick up a stick and keep shooting at make-believe bad-guys.

The violence in inherent in the person, and that's ok. The aggression simply needs to be tempered by education and empathy.

Yes, I can see the logic in that. First make it taboo and mysterious by denying it from them, then suddenly and arbitrarily let them have it at the very moment their bodies are jumping between hormonal extremes. This must be why teens handle sexuality so maturely and responsibly.

I was bought the Original GTA by my mother back when it was released (1997 so i would have been 12/13), I had to get my Mum to get it as the man at the shop wouldn't let me get buy it because of the big 18 certificate on the box.
I have just completed my teacher training and I am about to leave the house for a job interview teaching Yr 1 pupils.
