I assume that by "recommend" you meant for us to sell you on a band, not just name our favorite band as if that were enough.

I'm going to recommend you check out The New Pornographers. Their sound is a little "softer" than most of the guideline bands you mentioned (apart from Jonathan Coulton), which isn't to say that they don't have high-energy songs. But they have what i consider the most finely-crafted kind of indie rock sound.

Here are a couple songs to sample:

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Nightwish. Best Finnish symphonic metal band ever. Uh, Cage the Elephant? The Hives is amazing.
Seconding Nightwish, at least for the Tarja-era stuff. Cage the Elephant I only know from Borderlands :p

One approach is just "The" followed by any obscurity that comes to mind. Its a bit of a cop-out but if you find something good enough then it'll be the best name in the world. Sorry i couldnt be much more help :p

The title pretty much sums it up. Some of my favorite bands are Flogging Molly, Arctic Monkeys, Anamanaguchi, The Hoosiers,Jonathon Coulton, and Reel Big Fish, so stuff along those lines would be cool. So escapists, what do you recommend?

EDIT: Thanks for the recommendations so far guys, but I'm also not against broadening my horizons. So just your favorite bands, or just some obscure stuff would be awesome.

I dunno nothing really along those lines, well there is Paul and Storm, they open for Jonathan Coulton, not really the same style but funny sometimes. As for stuff I listen to Amorphis is pretty cool, as well as Alestorm and The Protomen (Rock operas about Mega Man.). The whole Ayreon project is pretty damn awesome too (also where my username comes from). And Blue Oyster Cult they're fairly awesome. If I think of more I shall post.

I've always found Feeder to be rather enjoyable. Judging by which era you listen to, they have a different style with most albums, which keeps their music fresh.

Ulrich Schnauss is a great artist if you want something nice and ambient to relax to.

Bit of Green Day now and then is good to listen to.

I recommend checking out last.fm, it helped me find a lot of great bands, or look into your favourite game soundtracks and see who the artists were for those.

Modest Mouse are my favourite band, though they are very love/hate. I like a lot of Blues music as well, so, in term of modern artists, Black Keys, The White Stripes and Blues Explosion are some of my favourites.

Polyphonic Spree

If you like overly-happy music consisting of 7-30 people (up to 18 vocalists, four drummers/percussionists, 2 synthesizers, 1 harp, 2 trumpets, 1 horn, 1 flute, 1 theremin), then it's for you.
