I haven't seen anybody mention 'Makes Sparks'- though I admit I only did a quick scan. So, they are my recommendation.

Avenged Sevenfold
Seriously? Look at the bands he said he likes.

Same for you.
Just because you like some bands doesn't mean you can't like another. I love dark music but I also like Taylor Swift.
The point is, he said I like these bands, recommend something by using this information (not exactly how he said it, but you know.), not recommend what you like and ignore what I like.
So i'll post what i want, if he says "recommend me a band" I'll recommend a band.
It seems stupid to recommend something completely different from what he likes, like "Hey, you like pie? Here, have some steak!"
What the hell, people can like multiple things and half of Avenged Sevenfold's first album was punk. He likes Flogging Molly thats punk.
I know that people can like different things, but if you look at the bigger picture, half of the first album is something he may like... He's asking for a band that he will like, not a very small fraction of a band's songs that he will like. Anyway, that's enough about that.

For jazz: Miles Davis, Weather Report, and Charles Mingus

For punk: Rancid

For Hip Hop: A Tribe Called Quest.

Enjoy.

The title pretty much sums it up. Some of my favorite bands are Flogging Molly, Arctic Monkeys, Anamanaguchi, The Hoosiers,Jonathon Coulton, and Reel Big Fish, so stuff along those lines would be cool. So escapists, what do you recommend?

EDIT: Thanks for the recommendations so far guys, but I'm also not against broadening my horizons. So just your favorite bands, or just some obscure stuff would be awesome.
Can't go wrong with Flogging Molly, mate.

Saw 'em live a couple years back.

Anyway, a band? How about That Handsome Devil; they've been described as "Orgasmic Psycho-Folk," and take some getting used to, but they're an AMAZING group once you get used to them.

Two good songs are as follows:

Elephant Bones

Lord, send down some angels, and they better have guns,
Cause everybody's crazy down here on everybody's drugs.
Casinos, pornos, stock shows, where white trash goes to die.
Bums push carts, crackhead squirrels,
And birds too drunk to fly.

Guah!

Keep dancing, it's the end of the world!
She said, "Oh, baby, to the end of the world!"
Come on, baby, it's the end of the world!
She said, "Smile to the end of the world!"

Keep dancing, it's the end of the world!
She said, "Oh, baby, to the end of the world!"
Come on, baby, it's the end of the world!
She said, "Smile to the end of the world!"

And they send down some astronauts to study our bones,
Through the miles of garbage,
Beneath all the junk that we owned.
Carbon dating beer cans, condoms and twinkie wrappers.
We were something beautiful, baby. What the hell happened?

If you you were worth it,
They'd skin you, too, for new tennis shoes,
Or a couch that fits the motif of the living room
And doesn't clash with your business suits!

I wanna be in a museum, stuffed and in a realistic position,
Like I'm hunting, calling someone, or buying something.
Way too busy to look up and see what was coming.

She said, "Smile, it's the end of the world!"

I want my bones kept next to
Someone of cultural significance,
Like Fonzie, or William Shatner.
Ha-ha, yeah,
Someone famous like Gilbert Gottfried
Or the dog from Frasier.
That caveman they found,
He was a punk. I knew him in high school.

Heh, heh, heh.

Mexico

Up all day, a-thinkin' like crazy
I can't get sleep, I'm tired of waiting
Along come a bus with a bunk fulla babies
It pulled away, and nobody's waving

C'mon pretty lady, put a bullet in my heart
Lay me on the streets and let the fiends rip me apart

We die, muchacho, vamanos

I'm goin' down to Mexico

I'm goin' down to Mexico
Down to Mexico, oh
I'm going down to Mexico
Down to Mexico, oh

We banditos
Cheap gold sheep's wool
Six-pack of Keystone
Lookin' like street folk
We don't need no
Power to the people
Heatstroke, chico
One, two, three, four

We banditos
Six-pack of Keystone
Smellin' like street folk
Keen-o, chico
I can't see so
Good, I think it's heatstroke
Outside, in line
At the bus depot

We die, muchachos, vamanos

I'm goin' down to Mexico

I'm goin' down to Mexico
Down to Mexico, oh
I'm goin' down Mexico
Down to Mexico, oh

Up all day, a-thinkin' like crazy

C'mon pretty lady, put a bullet in my heart (bullet in my heart)
Lay me on the streets and let the fiends rip me apart (Lie me on the streets and let the fiends rip me apart)

As you can tell, they're a very vocally-driven band.

Daft Punk or Chicane. One is Dance Techno the other is Trance Techno. Both great.

And Flogging Molly: Irish rock sexiness!
I thought that somebody ought to fix that!

*INSERT MY FAVORITE BAND HERE*

Everyone is doing just that, kinda pointless. I would attempt to provide a good list of artists who have proven to be superb, but they will only be drowned in every other post.
This. It's what almost every topic of this sort degenerates into. If I was the OP I probably wouldn't feel very motivated to search through all these half-hearted recommendations to find the ones people actually put some thought into.
I put thought into mine! He said that he could broaden his horizons, so I brought him something completely and awesomely different!

For an awesome mix of Reggae, Soul, Jazz and Electronica, check out Fat Freddy's Drop. Seriously good stuff.

And...

Perhaps my favourite band of the up and coming variety. Good balance of cool riffs and sweet hooks (without being too poppy). Reminds me of MGMT, with shades of Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead.

im a nitpicky little ***** so i have to point out, Trance and Techno are both subgenres of the Electronic Music genre, Trance is under 130 BPM where as Techno is above 150. SORRY!!! DONT HATE MEEEE!

I'll always suggest Citizen Cope.

The band does a lot of stuff across genres and the sound can be addictive.
