Let's see... I recommend Jacob's Ladder, Silent Hill, Event Horizon, The Ring (American version), John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), Aliens, Alien 3, ... I think that's all I got for now.

EDIT: Oh yeah, almost forgot... as opposed to the first 4 movies in the series (which were mostly just creepy gore), the 5th and 6th installments of the Hellraiser franchise actually qualify as horror movies, and they're good fun to watch at least once.
Your right. Though I think only Hellraiser 5 was scary.

I almost forgot Mirrors was absolutely terrifying. I had to have my Gf spend the night with me after seeing it I was so scared. I will admit that I was in college at the time. And when I say I had her spend the night I am not talking sexual innuendo, I mean I was really that scared I couldn't be in my room alone.

i'd say the wrong turn series was quite freaky, and a couple of others ive liked were Wolf Creek and 28 Days later, all good films.

I still believe that John Carpenter's sci fi/horror masterpiece "The Thing" remains the best horror movie of all time. Not for the gore and effects (which are all physical and revoltingly wetly organic for it) but for the growing menace, the paranoia, the terror of what happens when the Thing is loose. And I assure you that you do not want to spend the rest of the winter tied to a fucking couch....

Avoid remakes like the plague - Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre trumps remake, as does Friday 13th and Halloween. General rule - the higher the sequel number, the worse the suck will be :(

I found Exorcist a bit chatty. When I saw Titanic I was thinking "for fucks sake just sink". When I saw Exorcist I was thinking "for fucks sake, curse at the priest and then barf on him will ya!".

I had the punchline of Paranormal Activity spoiled for me and found it to be not so scary because of it - for ghost stories, lean towards J-horror like Ringu, Kairo, Ju-on. They tend not to over rely on jump shocks which, as a movie mechanic, suck goats.

Event Horizon was terrifying. I also liked Stay Alive, Shutter, The Grudge, and the Ring. Pulse was good too. The Ring is only good in the American Version. Other than that I would check out Japanese horror as they tend to be very scary but not I'm a guy with a mask and weapon who is going to kill you scary, but actually scary.
Event Horizon isn't really that scary more of a gore-fest. Don't get me wrong I loved it, just not the most terrifying film out there.

I don't mind watching a slightly dumb film like Saw or Resident Evil. I just want something good or entertaining or actually scary.
Ooh, the first Saw was brilliant. It's not... scary, per se, but it is very suspenseful and well built. The other 5 films were pretty bad, (admittedly, I did like 2 though, but it made me feel like I needed a long shower afterwards) since they focused more on gore and torture than characterization and psychological atmosphere. Of course, the plot twists are always fun, so I keep watching them... :|

I actually didn't find Alien scary at all. I watched it on a grey day with my younger brother and it wasn't a tiny bit scary...

I know, I'm strange.

OT: Alien. Apparently its good.

If you don't mind subtitles, I would highly suggest Martyers (sp?), A Tale of Two Sisters, and Audition. Both very good and Martyers is sometimes just hard to watch.

I did like the Amercian version of the Ring better than the original, but that is the only remake where I like the remake better.

I was also fairly impressed with Quarantine.

EDIT: and I am a big fan of the original Alien. My parents let me see that at a very young age and as such it has scared the sh*t out of me ever since.

I've been watching horror movies for the past few weeks and most are frankly shit.

But I liked a few:

Dead Space Downfall - I do recommend to check this one out.
.

Question - I never played the game as I just didn't get on with/enjoy the demo. But I do love a good horror. Will I be confused if I don't know the game? Does it stand alone? Is it worth 4 quid?

Alien.
Also, Evil Dead 2, for comedy horror, Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer for unsettling and eerily realistic horror, and Cannibal Holocaust for absolutely disgusting and wrong horror.
You just got extra points in my book for knowing Henry and Cannibal Holocaust. Cheers, mate. The August Underground series is more wrong than CH though. For extreme shit, also look to Torched, Hanger, Cannibal Ferox, Guinea Pig series. I could go on for days, but I won't.

Good horrors:

Nosferatu (1922)
Cabinet of Dr. Caligary (1920-something, can't remember. Maybe even 30's)
Psycho (1960)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Last House on the Left (1972)
The Exorcist (1973)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Carrie (1976)
Halloween (1978)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Alien (1979?)
Aliens (can't remember)
The Thing (1980)
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Evil Dead (1984?)
Evil Dead 2 (can't remember)

El Orfanto
Pan's Labyrinth (not really horror, but excellent regardless)
The Beyond
Deep Red
Zombi 2
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage

Directors:
George Romero
Guillermo Del Toro
Tobe Hooper
Wes Craven
Neil Marshall
Dario Argento
Lucio Fulci
John Carpenter

Anything by those guys is almost guaranteed to be good.

That'll get you started, anyway.

"Quarantine" was good, even though it has a few flaws. (I just saw somebody else mention it and thought I would back them up)

"The descent" was scary too. Something about being underground just makes me loose my $#*! easily.

on a different note, "The Others" isnt like "Bloody, brutal, gore filled extrrrravaganza"
But rather, "human beings in already unusual circumstances being slowly driven mad while others only look on with about as much pity as the Borg collective could muster" brouhaha with an ending that truly freaks you out

Seen em all, they're great.

Irreversible is also good.

I didn't put August Underground though, because while buying CH in some places is difficult, owning AU in some places is actually an arrestable offence.

Goddamn, that movie is good, in a totally, totally unbearably disgusting way.

Only time I've ever vomited during a movie!
Irreversible was ace, though not horror, the rape and fire extinguisher scenes are just savage. Also good point - some countries have censorship so strict, August Underground is illegal. The whole series is on a new level of disgusting, vile shit to shock and offend. Great stuff.
