Event Horizon isn't really that scary more of a gore-fest. Don't get me wrong I loved it, just not the most terrifying film out there.[/quote]

What do you mean? How can you call Event Horizon a gore-fest? One scene and I don't believe they show it to you. There is little gore/blood in the movie. It is mostly psychological.

I've been watching horror movies for the past few weeks and most are frankly shit.

But I liked a few:

Dead Space Downfall - I do recommend to check this one out.
.

Question - I never played the game as I just didn't get on with/enjoy the demo. But I do love a good horror. Will I be confused if I don't know the game? Does it stand alone? Is it worth 4 quid?
No. It's basically a prequeal to the game, while others call it a strandalone project. I sugegst go for it, and if your confused, easily look up the Dead Space wikipedia to answer some questions. But, in my opinion, no, you should be fine.

I tend towards older horror movies, mostly. Newer ones are...OK, but the old stuff tends to be scarier.

That said, I recommend anything prior to Phantom of the Opera by Dario Argento (seriously, guy is a master of horror).

Another good older movie, if you don't mind slashers, is the original (NOT parts 2 and 3) Sleepaway Camp.

As far as Dario Argento goes, while his films prior to PotO mentioned above are classics, as is Trauma, the three I recommend the strongest are Suspiria, Profondo Rosso, and Phenomena.

And while this is a thriller, not horror, I cannot recommend Fatal Attraction enough.

Also, the first 3 Omen films are all good in their own ways. The first one, I'm assuming you've already seen, but if you haven't, do see it for the incredible acting and suspense. Here's a line that anyone who has seen the movie will know: "It's all for you, Damien! I did it all for you!". The second one is a bit weaker in the character section, but makes up for it in creative kills. The third one is a balance between the two, though the ending is a bit of an anticlimax. But whatever you do, do not ever, ever watch the remake. It could have been worse...but it is still quite terrible. The one decent actor in the movie is trying to follow up from Gregory Peck. Yeah, good luck with that. And Mia Farrow helps ease the pain a bit.

Finally, for older movies, I strongly recommend the original Wicker Man. It has a slow build-up, but the pay off is quite worth it. And it has boobies. Lots of boobies. That helps a lot.

As for newer movies, I second the recommendation of 1408. It's much more of a psychological film, but it does a good job at making you feel uneasy the entire time.

Edit: Trauma came out in 1993, while his version of Phantom came out in 1998. Do not see that version of Phantom of the Opera. If you must see a horror version, find the one with Robert Englund as the Phantom. However, Phantom of the Opera is not the same movie as an earlier Argento film named Opera. That one is great fun to watch, by all accounts.

Try to get a hold of John Carpenter's The Thing, amazing horror film, it is an older flick but I think all the old special effects makes it better.
This.

I can't claim to be a horror movie buff or expert of connoissurrealist or whatever but I've seen quite a few and I've seen that film, and that's the one that sprang straight to mind. It's brilliant.

Jaws would have been a crap film if they hadn't had so much trouble with the model and been forced to substitute empty, steel-grey ocean for the planned shots of a rubber model shark underwater. The Thing was made from the start with the knowledge that no rubber model can ever be as scary as an open door you know you shut.

Dog Soldiers. Its a werewolf film, but a lot better than it seems. A little hidden gem.
Now that's a comedy. I think I'd met at least four of each of those characters by the time I saw it. The portrayals are great.

If you get it on DVD there's a very clever little extra called "Combat" on the disk that's worth the time.

This one was recommended to me with the description "visions of Hell to make Dante squirm" or something along those lines.

I thought it was shite, actually.

IT and the Shining were some pretty good ones. Watch IT if only for Pennywise(just heads up though, the ending sucks).
Read the book. Saw the film. I don't know what that film would have been like if I hadn't read the book but after I'd read the book DAMN that film sucked.

The Blair Witch Project
Let me save you some time. Three dumb Yankess run around in circles in the woods screaming "fuck" at each other, then die.

If you really feel you must watch it, you can safely skip everything between the first five minutes and the last five minutes. The first five tell you how it's going to end, and an hour and a half later it does.

Or to quote Stephen King, "When the door opens and there's a ten foot bug standing there, then audience screams, but in their mind they're thinking 'What a relief. I can handle ten feet tall. I was afraid it was going to be a hundred feet tall'. Nothing is scarier than what isn't shown."

Now you're talking. IT and Christine are great books (but truly lousy, lame films) and if you're into scary books try Web by John Wyndham. That one gave me the creeping heebie-jeebies.

I really really like this movie. It was my introduction to the world of Lovecraft, and I remember watching it around when I was 15 as well. I had no idea what was going on in it, so I would suggest reading some H.P Lovecraft and then re-watching the movie. It's so much more enjoyable that way.

Oh, another suggestion - Cabin Fever, but you have to watch the special version on the dvd that has the hands on screen. It was a fun movie, and that extra on the dvd makes it so much better.
