There's a beautifully written text adventure game called Photopia.

I don't want to spoil it, but the whole game is based around a certain very sad event and when you realize what's actually happened it hits you like a ton of bricks.
Just finished it, interesting work. Thanks for mentioning it.

When Sony and Microsoft announced, that they also will develop a motion controller-gimmick for their consoles... Sad, sad moment...

Someone mentioned the scene in Saint's Row 2 with Carlos. That was a tear jerker for me. In my recent memory, inFAMOUS 2, evil ending.
Zeke gets the plague (regardless of whether you go hero or not) and at the end you are thrown for a loop and people switch sides. If you decide to side with The Beast, Zeke goes against you and says "Next time I see you, you better shoot first." Now in this game, Zeke is actually pretty damn likable compared to how he was in the first. Well you end up having to kill Nix, and then Zeke shows up and you have a little show down, he shoots you with his revolver, you shoot him 3 times with a lightning bolt. I was pretty bummed that you had to kill him. Then The Beast decides he can't do what he's doing anymore and gives you his power and YOU become the Beast (much like I thought Cole was going to end up being the Beast anyway.)

The first that comes to mind, and most cliched, is of course Aeris' death in FFVII.

But equally gut-wrenching is the scene in Suikoden (the original) where you have to fight and kill your own father. The little sprite taking his son's hand and saying, "The greatest pride a father can feel is seeing his son surpass himself" is about as poetic a scene in gaming as I can recall.

Saddest gaming moment?

Finding out that brown FPS shooters that re-release more than Madden were the most popular games now.

Point and shoot! Curse/be cursed at by children through a headset! Hack! Aim-bot! Repeat ad-nauseam! FUN!

Ugh.

For me it is Crisis core. I never played a Final Fantasy game, and i really liked Zack. It was just so sad that he never got back to Aerith.

Heavy Rain.

The new house, Shaun in the playground, the suicide, the last trial, the endings. A lot of parts where I felt really sad.

MGS4 aswell. That one night where they went to the top of the Empire State Building.

The one scene in SH2 where James
Watches the tape of himself mercy killing his wife
Its a crushing moment of despair and regret, not that he committed the deed, but that he could rationalize such a thing to himself. He always said, "she was suffering, better to die quick than waste away slowly" but he soon realized he rationalized it because he was tired of her emotional abuse and his irrational sexual rage was being focused on her. And the worst part is that he never received any justice for it. No poetic irony, no charges, he got off scott-free, and he couldn't understand why a monster like himself could live in a world without receiving his rightful punishment and an innocent like Mary could get such a raw deal. He had to materialize his own punishment by himself in the form of the Silent Hill monsters and Pyramid Head in particular just to get some closure. Its an incredibly sad moment of crushing shame and the thought of really being an irredeemable monster.

While I feel it's too early to dicuss the ending to L.A. Noire I was impressed of the degree to which it came from nowhere and for me at least it cemented Cole as character, though I would argue that Red Dead's ending had a great deal more weight to it.

Overall for me though I'd have to say the last hour or so of MGS4 were the most touching moments I've ever seen in a game, clambering down that corridor as the war raged on around Snake will stick with me forever.

Can't believe nobody mentioned these yet!

Leaving Saria was one of the saddest things I've done.
Garrus' calibrations have become sad addictions. Wanna play ball, Garrus? Wanna go get some pizza?

Not today, guys. Not today... I'm in the middle of some calibrations... we'll get some pizza tomorrow, man. Yeah, tomorrow.
