Pretty much.

I don't get people complaining that it's "too silly, needs more serious". We've already GOT a GTA. Between GTA, later Saints Row and Just Cause, we finally have the entire range of third-person shooter sandbox more or less covered.

EDIT: I accidentally my brain.
Well maybe we just want more of Saints Row 2. It would be a lot easier for me to like this game if it didn't pretend to be even remotely connected to that game in any way. Too much to ask for some consistency maybe?
Game One: Dark gang drama

Game Two: Gang drama with an immature sense of humor

Game Three: Gang comedy with an immature sense of humor and no sense of realism

Game Four: Gang comedy with an immature sense of humor, no sense of realism, and a keen eye for the legendarily stupid

It seems consistent to me, just on a slope rather than a flat plane. And really, Why buy a game if it's more or less the same as the last one?

That's what sequels are.

Man, what if Mass Effect went from space drama to space comedy, starred in entirely by that one guy in Star wars

Wouldn't that be unsettling and irritating?

I think the reason people complain about the wackiness is about how Saints Row 2 balanced the zaniness and the seriousness and made an amazing story. Saints Row 3 was just wacky and insane, fun, but lacked a good story and characters.

The main problem I'm having with Saints Row 4 is that it feels so half assed. It's the same graphical style, same mechanics, same setting, same everything pretty much but with a dubstep gun and aliens! RAWR!

The fact that it started out as DLC for Saints Row The Third really shows, and I wasn't a massive fan of Steelport anyway as it was too small and felt barren. Seriously, it was like walking around a ghost town a lot of the time.

I like the idea of a sandbox game where the whole point is to be stupid and cause chaos, but either go big or go home. This is a lazy cashgrab, and it's not a game I'm willing to pay full price for by any means.
Go big or go home...hmm, so tell me how a super powers, whacky guns, and being the president is not going big. Also, they've released what? One trailer? One trailer that goes for about a minute? and you're just gonna come out and say that it's not big enough/moved forward enough to be considered good? That makes no sense!

This game looks awesome, it's doing what the series has always done, continually top itself with bat shit insanity. My only issue is with the people who keep asking it to be Saints Row 2 again. don't get me wrong, that game is great, but we should always look to move forward and not stagnate.

Speaking only for myself of course, but having everything the same as before but with some more weapons is not my idea of going big, it's lazy.

Well seeing as how they've shown gameplay and that it clearly shows it's the same environment, with the same mechanics and same graphical style, except this time you have a gun that makes people's heads pop and some aliens, I don't think it's too big of a stretch to assume they haven't changed much. If it didn't say Saints Row 4 on the video you could be forgiven for thinking it was a trailer for Saints Row The Third DLC.

Not only that but the game came out less than two years ago, the last DLC was only a few months ago so it's pretty obvious they're rushing it out. Probably to get it out before GTA V I bet.

Unless they, like quite literally every other game developer out there, have multiple teams working on different projects.

game development is not

whole team make game --> whole team makes DLC 1 --> whole team makes DLc 3 --> whole team makes DLC 3 --> whole team makes new base game, etc. etc.

it's

Team makes base game --> large majority of team starts working on next big project while smaller teams work on DLC ---> when DLC is completed that DLC team either goes back into the larger team making the next big thing, or goes into other DLC team who, after their DLc is done, go into the larger team working on the next big thing.

They, quite literally, could have had the majority of their team working on this since the base game was released 2 years ago.

I really liked SR3, but, well, I'm cautiously optimistic for this. Originally this was going to be an expansion, not a full game, and it seems like now they're just gonna slap a sixty dollar price on it and call it good. I don't know, I'll wait for some reviews I guess, SR3 had a lot of faults that really could have been improved.

Here's hoping SR4 isn't just an expansion turned full game.

Bit suprised so many people round' here are behind this game, well whatever floats yer boats. I still think this is trying too way hard and is going to end up sucking because of it. Plus it looks really lame, so eh.

It's a stupid concept. If you want to bring features like a dubstep gun and superpowers in your game, fine. But why can't those things just be cheats? Or make a new IP. Why does it have to be a Saints Row game?

I just want them to make a proper sequel to Saints Row 2 or reboot the series and make what is basically a Saints Row 2 style game with updated graphics and a new story and of course more customization.

They already have that, its called GTA, which is why they went so crazy in 3 and 4, to make it NOT just GTA.

One of my favorite franchises, irreparably destroyed. Saints Row is far beyond dead to me now.
I wish SR:TT had been a new IP... I wish SR2 didn't have to sit beside it's deformed, slobbering, incontenent, retarded cousin, but now there's two of them... :/
There are no words... Just--what happened Volition? :/

(Too dramatic?)

And yet SR2 had so much more than I feel GTA ever had. Co-op, customization and above all fun. GTA:SA was a great game, but I still place SR2 above it... apart from that I've always found GTA, frankly, boring.

I have always found GTA to be dreadfully boring myself, which is why I found Saint row 1 dreadfully boring, and why I largely found Saints row 2 largely boring.

Saints Rows 2 however had the additional problem being not know what it wanted it to be, it tried to mash humor with a serious gang drama and the result was one of the most thematically inconstant games I ever played. I found it hard, if not impossible, for my guy who just got done running over 1,000 pedestrians in a car to get all sappy and emotional when carlos died, it just didn't make any sense, and the entire game was like that. GTA suffers from this too, though to a far lesser extent then SR2 did.

Saints Row 3 is, imo, the only game in the series that actually felt like it knew wtf it was doing with its plot/tone.

I like that it's getting more wacky. Too many games today aim to be "Taken seriously" and as a result we get two minutes of watching a kid do his homework in heavy rain with barely anything that could be called "Gameplay".

I mean, what was SR IV supposed to do? Become a story about impoverished youths in inner city america doing anything they can to get food and halt starvation? That is not saints row's style nor will it ever be. I think people need to get over that.

They've shown a minute of gameplay, obviously it's not going to represent the majority of the game. Yes the last DLC for SR3 came out a few months back and that SR4 is basically just DLC expanded, but you can't judge what the whole game will be like just on those aspects. It hasn't come out yet, so why bag it or make assumptions?
