It'll never pass in truly democratic countries.

Too many people would be against that.

But, all the same, if this gains any ground, it'll be a terrible thing. I don't openly protest as I despise politics, but this, I'd be out on the streets screaming at the supporters. It's just wrong.
It wont pass anyway. its unconstitutional.
http://www.ustr.gov/acta

Problem is that it didn't "have to pass" anything. This wasn't a bill being sent through congress or anything, it was a trade agreement. Meaning no one really had a say except the administration, the ambassador involved is a presidential appointee.
Doesnt matter, Bills arent the only things bound by constitutional law. If they try to enforce this any first year lawyer could fight it.

This is why i'm never sure if i should be angered, scared or reassured.
Can someboy explain to me, in simple terms, what this act does and where it has been passed and who is considering it?
Part of the problem is that alot of what is in ACTA isn't actually known by the public. The White House is citing "National Security" when asked why it won't release the information to the public, which immediately raises red flags with me.

Now that the thing is signed, the text is now available, but no one but a lawyer is going to understand it.

On the one hand, it's completely evil and needs to die in a fire.

On the other hand, it could potentially find nearly all sources of child pornography and destroy them.
It'll probably also ban breast cancer awareness and a perfectly legitimate dentist in Queensland.

I don't think I fully understand this ACTA thing, even with a bit of research. Before I start getting all worked up about it, can someone please explain to me exactly what ACTA is, in a nutshell, and provide specific examples as to why it's so bad? I mean, from what I understand right now, it doesn't seem very good. I just want to get my facts straight.

There was shit about ACTA about a year ago, the internet raged, and then the day that it apparently came into existence nothing changed.

its almost like the OP is full of crap on that part.

one thing i dont agree with:(this is part of ACTA)
In July 2008, the United States Department of Homeland Security disclosed that its border search policies allow U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to conduct random searches of electronic devices for "information concerning terrorism, narcotics smuggling, and other national security matters; alien admissibility; contraband including child pornography, monetary instruments, and information in violation of copyright or trademark laws; and evidence of embargo violations or other import or export control laws." US Senator Russell Feingold called the policies "truly alarming" and proposed to introduce legislation to require reasonable suspicion of illegality and to prohibit racial profiling. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has previously upheld the constitutionality of laptop searches without reasonable suspicion at border crossings.

so yea 9th circuit court of appeals just gave a big FU to the 4th amendment

EU has it a bit better

ACTA is not designed to negatively affect consumers: the EU legislation (2003 Customs Regulation) has a de minimis clause that exempts travellers from checks if the infringing goods are not part of large scale traffic. EU customs, frequently confronted with traffics of drugs, weapons or people, do neither have the time nor the legal basis to look for a couple of pirated songs on an i-Pod music player or laptop computer, and there is no intention to change this.

Unless you're a fucking idiot you would vote no to this upon seeing what comes with this disgusting... thing.

I mean, fucking hell, I need my meds to get through the day, if they became super expensive or inaccessible to me, I would have to kill everyone on the planet.

With a spoon.

'K?

Remember people, I'm a 15 year old kid debating on this, and yeah, this doesn't say much for the world we live in, but if a few kids can realize that politics are starting to turn the worlds free reign into a form of dictatorial government, then that shows that people need to be worried as well.
One could also argue that your age means you don't have enough knowledge or experience to truly understand politics or the implications of laws and treaties such as this, and that you are in way over your head.

O.T. There's a hell of a lot of conflicting information and viewpoints on this thread, so I'm going to assume it's just full of idiots and I'll search for my information elsewhere. I highly doubt this is anywhere near as awful as you want to make it sound, and it will no doubt be shot down if it's anywhere near that.

Laws like this have happened before (and only affecting internet file sharing) and it failed. Now that both legal Drugs and food have been put on the Line, adding both major money factor and human life factor. So if ACTA is passed, people will go hungry from sudden lack of food, and get sick and die because their medicine is now too expensive.

I really can't see the selling point at ALL with this ACTA piece of shit.

Who the hell would agree with it? It has little or no benefit to even those in the most vampiric of positions in draconian corporations...

Fuck yeah!

I welcome you internet police overlords. Burn all these pirates and people who use the web for questionable purposes!
its not just the internet you fool. This entire thing will restrict EVERYTHING. Music, Television shows, any form of genetic engineering, modifications to parts by different companies. YOU are the short sited one. I can see several ways to improve the hydraulic quick disconnect, and even though my great grandfather was the one to sign the patents, if ACTA goes into effect, I can't touch it without the company consent to try and help make it better.

You don't realize that this also effects the drug companies. Generic store-knockoffs will be banned and we will be FORCED to buy expensive, high-price namebrands on EVERYTHING.
*Runs into the room frantic*

"The Consequences Will Never Be The Same! The Sky Is Falling, The Sky Is Falling!"

EDIT: Calling me names helps you get your point across really well btw...
Okay right lets get straight about this, ignore the over-hyped stuff etc etc, and simply put it this way; ACTA wont simply stop pirates and questionable activitys, thats not the problem, it will quite literally stop everything. For instance this very website? Think about it, if there going to restrict anything that breaches copy right, than there will be nothing postable on this website. Every mention of a game or brand etc (negative or positive) without written consent from the company, is techincaly a breach of copyright and thus will add to this 3 strikes stuff and get your internet perma-banned. Bye bye pretty much everything.

Seriously you want this to go ahead?

okay well heres a list of the websites you'll be able to visit;

-Your internet service providers
-.........
-.........
-.........
that is all.

Does that make this poitn any clearer? Im not going to insult you or call you names, im mearly going to explain this, as youve celarly got the wrong end of the stick.

I'm sure game companies won't mind posting a little 'you;re allowed to make let's plays of this game' sticker on ACTA's front door.
So I don't mind.
