Screw the competitive spirit, I'm tired of multiplayer crap.

This is so very true. My GF always knows when I'm playing multiplayer... instead of the usual quiet contented calm of my single player gaming, she hears thumps, guttural growls and swearing :D

I find it really annoying that almost all games now focus on multi player. And yes, it means they skimp on single player. And I hate that soooo much. But you know what almost every game completely ignores? Co-op. I don't mean Black Ops co-op where you and a friend play online, thats just multi player with someone you know playing. I mean proper co-op. What they hell happened to it? It's not at all hard really, ALL of my friends have 2 or more controllers and I have 2 as well. All I do is get them over, start up the PS3 and away we go. IF games had co-op.

I miss the time when we had games like Rachet and Clank Gladitator, ArmA 2 and more. Even Battlefield 2 had a co-op focus. That game was almost completely multi player, but there were small single player maps. And what was co-op? You playing the small single player maps with up to 16 mates. See? It's not even hard. You could replace the other team on Black Ops with NPCs and it would then be co-op. Not the best but better than nothing.

Games like Army of Two are great because they are a single player game but they can also be played co-op, and it's built to work both ways. Hell, there could even be an easy multi player, kind of like the Gears of War multi player.

What someone said about multi player increasing tension and single player decreasing it.... %100 correct. Multi player you end up with idiots yelling your ear off while rocket jumping onto you and teabaging you. And when you kill them, they will scream HAX into your ear soooooo fucking loud you want to take their micro phone and shove it down their throat. Not to metion that the action never lets up, so there is no rest or time to do anything other than wade in and spray like crazy until you hit something. And when you are starting out, it gets really annoying when someone triple your level kills you again and again and then when you get a revenge kill he goes insane into your ear.

Single player, complete opposite. No one is yelling your ear off, and let's say your playing, say Oblivion, you can walk around town and relax, selling some of your stock of loot and talking to the NCPs around town.

To sum out my rant, multi player is fun but in small amount. Single player is great until you finish, in which case, you can replay or just not play again or if its a sandbox game, you can continue to play for hours on end. Co-op is great, for many reasons, like having someone who you can work with on your side, and it also means you get friends over, and socialize! Which I think many multi players need to do a lot more often. One of the reasons I prefer single player and co-op is that its always different, right until you finish it. Where as now a days, multi player is usually just death match and a flag to think about stealing or a bomb to maybe plant, but even in CTF and SAD you will still get people in it just for the kills.

If you can kill them, you're a noob. If they can't kill you, you're a hacker.

This is how it works in the new multiplayer universe. Personally, I don't care about the multiplayer bullshit they add to just about every game. But I'll buy it whether it has multiplayer or not. Just because it's there doesn't mean I have to play it.

Same, but it means they cut off some single player and almost all of the time all of co-op. I really just want a few games based around single player and co-op, rather than this endless stream of CoD and Halo clones that have a fucking short single player and say that the multi player makes up for it. Well what if I don't want to play multi player? Huh? What then?

Online multiplayer games have largely turned into ragefests for me. It's gotten to the point where I can hardly stomach pvp at all.

Multiplayer can be ridiculously fun if you're playing with/against friends, but when all you have is random fucktards from the depths of the net, you're more likely to end up in a frothing rage than you are to have fun.

Could be that youre just paranoid. I quit playing fps multiplayer years ago for the same reason, not everyone was a cheater, but people were so damn paranoid that you were afraid to do two headshots in a row, because angry mod will wield his banhammer upon you, even my best friend would accuse me of cheating in a friendly lan game sometimes, kinda kills the joy of owning him when he thinks that some program is doing it.

The focus on multi-player is just about enough to push me away from gaming after 30 or so years. It is lazy on the part of developers and it has led to gamers being willing to accept paying full price for a 4 hour campaign. I would not choose to socialise with most people I met on Xbox Live in real life and I don't want to spend my leisure time doing it.

I love FPS, I don't want to play multi-player, I have never paid so much attention to reviews as I do these days to get a good sense of campaign length (and quality, a good campaign will be worth a repeat after all) and if it is all about multiplayer the forget about it. Most FPS games these days are worth about a tenner from a bargain bucket to me.

I feel the need to point out Team Fortress 2. Greatest multi-player FPS I ever played. And I rightly agree with a great deal of what you said. In the end it comes down to Q&A testing, which Valve is great at, and has been doing since TF2's release. If you try only one OFPS, try this one, it may save your opinion of the whole genre.

You are either very unlucky or exaggerating like mad. Cheaters are not "EVERYWHERE" in games.

Quickscoping and Akimbo 1887s are not glitches, they are part of the game. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Cheaters are hardly exclusive to the internet.

Despite doing okay at shooters (CoD, usually in the Top 3 during free-for-all), I start getting battle fatigue after the 200th match.

The fierce attention required to outheadshot and maneuver around opponents leaves me drained eventually and it seems like the more I play, the harder it is to sleep. Someone--a close friend of mine--told me that the reason I find it difficult to sleep is because I'm putting that extra stress on myself to do better than than somebody. So what happens if I play games with no competitive edge?

At one point in 2008, I remember playing my DS Lite a lot. I cut out my PC and console time almost entirely, and slept much better and more deeply as a result.

I'm a shitty player online, so that's one of the reasons I don't really play online. I fucking hate losing. And I lose all the time (redundancy is so redundant). Anyway. I do agree that companies should focus more on single.

I love multiplayer and when someone is cheating i take it as a challenge to root them out and kill them and only them. Mainly playing bfbc2 multi these days and I have only in the last couple of months seen anyone cheating at all.
Managing to kill aim bots more often than they kill you is very rewarding.

I've never enjoyed multiplayer. With only a few exceptions, whether it was online or in person, I've just never been able to have fun while fighting other players. Part of this is because I don't enjoy "training." Ironic, since I'm an RPG fan, but I don't like spending countless hours trying to memorize every last aspect of a game. This is true not just of Shooting games, but Fighting games, too. If either of these genres had some decent single-player campaigns, I'd consider buying them and playing them to learn how to be really good at them. But, unfortunately, as has been mentioned, too many FPS's - and pretty much ALL fighting games - have piss poor single-player, so you either have to spend a great deal of time training by yourself, or learn while you get the snot beat/blown out of you by your not-so forgiving opponents.

But I suppose I'd be willing to forgive a lack of single-player if multiplayer games had a bit smaller of a learning curve. If a multiplayer game can bring in people of all types, all "training" levels, and give them all an equal chance of winning, then I can have fun. Games like Halo, Smash Bros., and good old Goldeneye are some of the few multiplayer games I've enjoyed, and I've never owned any of them; instead, each one of these I've sat down while at a friend's house, gotten a quick lecture on controls, and even though I'd be severely outmatched, I still had a chance to win.

Well Battlefield and Call of Duty tends to have cheaters.

Try Team Fortress 2 or some games that do not tend to have cheaters everywhere.

Both elements of the game should be equally polished. If any one side is focused on, it shouldn't be to the neglect of the other.

The only answer I can give to the OP is play Halo: Reach's MP or Halo 3's. If you can't get a kill in anyone of the lobbies then your not trying. And I love how it feels like no one takes the matchs seriously. But the betrayal system needs some work. If you jump infront of my Spartan laser as I have charged it up to hit a elite in a warthog's gunner position and you get killed, I've not betrayed you. Your just taking no notice of what's going on around you. [sub]and I was doing so well in the match first strike and everything before I was kicked...*mutter mutter*[/sub]

Yep, I've heard this one before -.-
Same here.

Off-topic: In Skyrim, since your a dragon born or something are you a set race then? Cause I was looking through the races in the oblivion manual yesterday and this thought just came to me. Also the manual makes me think Skyrim should definitely have 2 player local co-op.
