Screw the competitive spirit, I'm tired of multiplayer crap.

I wish multiplayer in games would be more co-operative oriented than rivalry based. Fun shared is fun enjoyed.

After 9 years of online FPS gaming, I will be boycotting and completely ignoring any multiplayer designed games. The only game I will be purchasing this year is Skyrim and that's it.
There are more singleplayer games getting released you know.

Anyway, this is why I barely play with random people online, and that's a big difference. I'd say multiplayer is awesome if you find a cool group of people to play with. Apart from the occasional match of Bad Company 2 (which has a pretty damn good community on the PC) and Crysis 2, all my multiplayer gaming is done with either Escapist people, my Source gaming clan (lots of TF2, some L4D(2) and CS:S) or some friends.

MW2 also isn't exactly a good representative for multiplayer gaming, seeing how fundamentally broken it is. I'd say give TF2 a whirl with us fine Escapist folks. It's a totally different multiplayer gaming experience. One that's actually good. You seem to be bummed out by, what, 2 games? Give the other side of multiplayer gaming a chance!

Well, i play TF2 often. Haven't really seen any hackers. Maybe once, cause every single shot a sniper made was a headshot. And very far away. And everyone was just spazzing around. Though i guess maybe he was like some sort of TF2 god, who had played it nonstop from the start... but i don't think so.

Also, a non-competitive multiplayer game I play is L4D2. I play the campaign, don't really like versus (so...many...ragequitters!!!!!!). But I only play with people I've played before and know they play nice and are fun to play. So we always have a good time.

Somewhere down the line developers discovered they could actually short change you on content (think about it- how long are single player campaigns now days?) so long as the multiplayer was good enough.

That's about all there is to it. MW2 was a terrible game almost solely because they took away dedicated servers (which made hacking a breeze incidentally) and because they made no effort to balance the weapons. Instead of having to actually play to the strengths and weaknesses of a kit because of how some weapon types were distributed (shotguns being a secondary weapon, along with a small handful of machine pistols- mainly the glocks) you could play a kit with literally zero weaknesses. Oh, and the pro perks. One man army and scavenger meaning you'd never, never run out of ammo was a stupid idea. On it's own things like noob tubes weren't a problem because it had a definitive skill ceiling where if you could only use them you got screwed and would probably break even, at best.

The problem with offering variety is that it's useless when there's clearly just "stronger" options.

Agree with people saying we need more focus on single player and coop. On that note who remembers original AvP Stranded coop map, that was fun with 4 marines taking on a never ending waves of aliens and no goddamn facehuggers to worry about.

Not exactly, being a pathetic human is a racial skill, it comes in 90% of humanity, just like you try to attack the opposite group to make your position better and feel better
Is this, like, one of those cryptic cyphers from Assassin's Creed? Those things are hard.

Given, there was once a time where I could do that without hacks. Times when I had an unholy high k/d percentage (even with the kukri) and a headshot percentage nearing 100% in some matches. It's not without reason that my first class is Sniper, with about 120-ish hours played, and my second class Engineer with 15-ish hours. But that's like, 2 years ago. Good times...

That's why I liked playing with a clan so much, they knew better than to call me a hacker. As I said before, multiplayer gaming really gets good with a cool group of people. With randoms, especially in popular, broken games, it's rather balls.

So be proud, people of the internet, for with the exception of the few, you have created a modern mentality that not only accepts but praises the idea of cheating. It's lead me to a personal (note: PERSONAL) decision. After 9 years of online FPS gaming, I will be boycotting and completely ignoring any multiplayer designed games.

Ive been playing multiplayer FPS since Action Quake 2 (a mod that was the precursor to CS). there have always been cheaters but the biggest issue was the jump to broardband, if it was not in your area and you were running a 56k modem it could make for some painful matches.

If you don't like the people on your server then move servers, easy. Although most people are not cheating just because they have a better score than you. Not playing the game the way you want to play it is also not cheating. Let people use the weapons they want.

If you don't enjoy multiplayer then not playing is a good choice, this is your free time we are talking about. That doesn't mean everyone else is cheating or applauding cheating. If you wanted to get better scores you could just practice like any other activity, rather than pissing and whining thateveryone must be cheating. Yes there are hackers but they are not the majority.

I bought Halo: Reach, just to name one game, a while back and have never even played it on MP. Ever. I buy the games I like so I can play them either on local coop or for myself.

The sad thing is that people playing over the web have no respect, and it's way too hard to make "friendships" that are just sustained by the love for playing online videogames and an internet connection (for me anyways).

Hm... well, it was a custom map, and i have to say, a perfect one for snipers. I suppose i might have gotten envious. I just couldn't believe someone would be so good at the game. Still, i can't decide if he was amazingly good or hacking.
Basically it's all about envy, i guess... People don't like to lose, and want to be number one. Well, most people, at least. Though, i have to say, TF2 has shown this not to be true, always. I horribly suck at playing with the scout (the most points I've gotten is 7), but i just love the speed and agility, just running around like crazy. It's fun.

Maybe you're a bit too competitive...I mean when I lost in those games I didn't care. I cared when total nonsense happened like when I'd blast someone in the head with a shotgun point blank, and they don't die, but they turn around with their sniper rifle and kill me in one shot.

I've said this many times here already, sniper rifles should do minimum damage at close range, it's nonsense they 1 hit kill in that range and long range. There's no defending it, it's OP and pisses me off when nonsense when the above happens.

I only play fighting games competitively, I never took FPSs seriously enough to put the effort into getting really good at them.

I've been playing a multiplayer RTS for about 6 years now. I've come across less than 10 cheaters during that entire time, 3 of which I personally helped get banned.

The internet's fine bro. It's just a handful of games that suffer more than others.

The only answer I can give to the OP is play Halo: Reach's MP or Halo 3's. If you can't get a kill in anyone of the lobbies then your not trying.
Reach is especially good in this regard. Virtually all the changes from Halo 3 (and this is a consistent evolution in Halo MP if you trace it back through the previous iterations) are designed to close the gap between good and bad players (it's a positive or negative evolution, depending upon your perspective - I hated it so much I stopped playing entirely after a few months). There aren't many hackers on the whole, either.

Games to me are all about escaping FROM other human beings rather than joining them in some circle-jerk orgy of bloodletting.

I don't really understand or like the multiplayer craze. I think game companies should focus on the single player campaigns again.
i think theey should be releasing the full package. a single player campaign that is decent length and alright story aswell as a enjoyable multiplayer.
