Honestly, I'm in the south at the moment, and for the past week or two, they've been whining about how cold it is. Sometimes it's a bit chilly, but nothing colder.

Damn straight. My gf lives in Paris, and I was there last winter. Not even 3 cm of snow, and the whole city just shuts down. Metros stop running, busses get stuck, arilines can't fly...It's so funny.minimacker said:

Also you've got to remember that:
a) we haven't really been getting more than one or two days of snow a year until recently, really - as such this is unusual and we're not as prepared/used to it as scandinavians would be.
b) A lot of our roads are country roads on which snow can cause complete havoc. See a) for why.
In sum, meh. I hope the snow goes away because I don't want to drive in it - and it's bloody freezing in the West Midlands I don't care what you say - but I don't think the BBC or people in general really make that big a deal of it. It's more of a novelty than panic.
Also I would argue that while it is true that the British mentality is to complain, no-one, themselves included, really takes complainers seriously. It's been good-natured grumbling, mostly.

Yeah I remember last years hilariously dramatic coverage of it. And I also remember Charlie Brookers take on it which I am glad to see has been posted here. What I remember most of all is walking up to collage only to find it completely abandoned. I was the ONLY ONE who even tried to get to work. My province, 2004. Up to 39 in of snow around the province. In my town, we had just over 2 feet. Wasn't the end of the world. I love Canada.
What the heck? Some snow comes and yer all over it in the news? Hell, we Norwegians first start commenting on the weather once it starts breaking some records! (Which happened a lot all over our country lately because of some wind comin from up north or from Siberia or something). Hell, our MAILMEN keep delivering our mail even in a FREAKIN' -43,5 degrees Celcius (now THAT is cold), and you don't see 'em complaining!
