There's a simple soloution. Veils can be worn in shops that allow it. If the shop requires you to prove your identity at the door for purposes of security, then all veiled people must register their identity or not enter.

I'm not really defending it, because I'm trying to be tolerant. They don't question our "no-meat-on-Fridays", I don't question their "women must hide faces". Maybe they think it's too sinful? Ask them, not me.

i actually agree with you. that law is stupid and just because something is 'traditional' doesn't mean it's right. granted, it doesn't mean it's wrong but times change. when i was 16 i had a moped and when i went into a shop i was usually asked to take my helmet off. they should be able to wear whatever they want.

What is intolerable about wanting a better world for all?, im just telling you the truth, these women deserve the right to live their own lifes, and not to be controlled by the men like slaves, which pretty much is what they are.

I have full tolerance for other religions, i dont even care what religion someone is a part of, but i do care about stuff that degrades other people, i hate the fact that women arent treated as human beings in some countries, and what for?, a moldy old book and some fairy tale?, its not worth it.

I am against slavery in all forms, be it sexual, for labor or whatever else kind there is, No human being has the right to control another human beings life to the extent that they cant even live like normal people, i mean yeah, the police have the right to uphold the law, and by doing so stopping people from doing something that effects others in a bad way, but thats just logical if a society is to work, but enforcing laws that prohibit women from living their lifes just because of a religion, thats not only stupid but also immoral.

It's illegal to wear a veil in Turkey and that's an Islamic country. They hardly enforce the law but still.

I get why people are saying that they shouldn't wear the veil and I don't think it's racist to express that view. This is a complicated issue and if we're honest with ourselves neither option is really great.

But come on does anyone really think it's a smart idea for criminals to wear Burkas and the like? If people are shoplifting then they ain't gonna wanna draw attention to themselves. A person in a Burka is going to attract attention. If armed robbery is their game then a speedy getaway is one of your priorities. Full body garb does not make for an easy getaway.

So yeah a few people have used veils to commit some crimes, but I'm not convinced it?s an epidemic so I'm not convinced it's necessary to deny someone their right of religious expression.

You may think their beliefs are silly or that their attitudes against woman are archaic but that is no reason to deny people a right that everyone else takes for granted.

It's a security risk, but I think we, as a society, should just accept this risk. Political correctness in this case would be giving into the people asking for them to be banned for safetys sake. I think the issue is that Islam demands that western society make special dispensation for them. So they can get ID but don't have to show their face when someone wants to check.
Of course this doesn't work both ways. Walking around Iran in shorts and a vest will get you arrested, granted Iran is an extreme example but it isn't much different in other Islamic countries.

The problem here is that we're obviously not going to agree and we'll end up arguing around in circles. Just like with any other religion thread. I've made my opinions clear, have fun arguing about it.

I whole hartedly agree. Why is it that we can't go by our ways and dress to our tradition in their country without getting arrested, yet they immigrate to our country, and call us intollerent when we ask for ID, and a simple visual proof. You can't enforce your laws or beliefs in another country without a problem unfolding. I heard once (word of mouth, not the net) where a woman wearing the traditional clothing and veil, was asked for ID and to remove her viel to check when purchasing cigarettes, well did that create problems. I still don't see how the attendent was racist and intollerent when he was following Australian laws. But now that we are more of a multi coultural nation, we have to respect peoples rights and choices.

I'm believe in the "follow the laws of the land" belief (I'm a kiwi, in Aus, so I didn't change much besides the national holiday) but if you travel to another country, please don't call them intollerent or racist, we all come from different walks of life. Just respect the laws of where you are living.
