It happens every month or so, but I'm feeling the need to go through a whole series of anime, or at least watch a few movies in japanese animation. Shojo, action, mecha, samurai, just give me what you have, but I've been feeling for something GOOD recently, as I've been smacked around quite a bit by mediocrity.

I'm currently watching all of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, since I never saw the full series when I was younger. And before anyone complains, I think it is pretty good, so don't start on me for liking something you guys don't...

Otherwise, I'd recommend Higurashi and Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Death Note, Elfen Lied, Hellsing, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. That's all the anime (bar Pokemon) I've seen, for the record, so yeah... and I feel all of them to be amazing in their own way :D. Also, I've heard really good things about Serial Experiments Lain, though I've not seen it yet, but it's curently on my 'to watch' list so I'll add it to my recommendations too :).

Angel Beats is pretty good.

However, I'd suggest going and watching Black Cat, definitely one of my favourite animes around.

Not a big anime fan, but I really enjoy Full Metal Alchemist. The first series mostly followed the manga, the second follows the series exactly.

Summer Wars (film)
- One of those movies about the internet going haywire thanks to hacking and our infrastructure getting all messed up as a result with, of course, mankind facing nuclear annihilation being thrown it. What makes it stand out is its human component; its family message is genuine and moving. Visually and aesthetically pleasing, superbly directed, a must-see.

Ouran High School Host Club (26 episode series)
- A parody of its genre that throws in a lot of emotions and characters development while it?s at it. All topped off by an appropriate, satisfying conclusion.

Darker than Black (26 episode series)
- A show about people with superpowers but don't let that stop you. The story is dark, the world fleshed out, the characters believable. Despite a zany premise, its a great show you shouldn't miss out on.

Desert Punk (24 episode series)
- A lewd comedy that actually tells a pretty good story along the way. Some fault it for putting the lewd aspects aside in later episodes but it actually works smoothly as there's long since been an underlying seriousness to it all. Desert Punk himself is a marvelous creation for the way he makes the character traits of hyper-competent agent and pathetic needy pervert go hand in hand. Also don't miss out on Kosuna's character voiced by the wonderful Luci Christian.

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni.

It's a comedy with a surprisingly involved plot. If you enjoy a few laughs with your webs of intrigue, there you go.

Im not sure what you have already seen, but if you want some violence/innocence/other pretty damn good points found in many anime, try 'Elfen Lied'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfen_Lied

I found it pretty awesome. so if you watch it or have seen it, let me know what you thought. There is also Death Note and the various gundams.

If you like sports anime, I suggest Hajime no Ippo.

If you want the standard shounen extravaganza, go for Ao no Exorcist. Fair warning, the story begins with a two parter, and the second episode is a major tear jerker.

Baccano! and Eve No Jikan are both pretty damn excellent, I'm not going to describe either becasue I can't do them justice.

Madoka Magica is a great Deconstruction of the Magic girl genre. It can be predictable but it's presented very well.

Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei is a great off the wall comedy show about a melodramatic teacher and his psychotic students filled with satire of everything from story tropes to social ills.

Hell Girl: The first season is pretty good but season two(Two Mirrors) blows it away by dropping the black and white morality and playing with the core concepts of the series in interesting ways.

Okay so, I am kinda new here but in a recent random check of the first 20 pages of the "off topic" section I came across like 5 of these threads.
Why not just use one of them instead of wasting everyones time making a thread where everyone will just parrot the exact same answers all the other threads got.
You may be only have been here for a few days but you are entirely correct, this sort of thread is probably the most common repeat on these forums. Don't mind so much if it's asking for specific types but if it's just general then pointless.

OT: If you haven't already seen them, either:

I'm like that. It's always one series at a time and I just pick it up every once and a while.
Some I've watched:
Elfen Lied - Laughable in it's execution also very ecchi,
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu - Personal Favourite it's a slice-of-life mainly with a slew of other genres,
Code Geass - 2nd Favourite a mecha,
Spice & Wolf - Not sure what to say about it, it's very good though,
K-ON! - Another slice of life, I've heard it called generic moe... h8rs gon' h8,
Lucky Star - Comedy through and through in my top 5.. Don't let the intro put you off lol I would watch it for a year because of the intro,
Hellsing Ultimate - Better than Hellsing, a lot longer, a lot fewer.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni-Kai/Rei- Great series Psyche, horror, comedy,
Trigun - Ending was meh, glad I watched it none the less, was pretty funny,
Witch Hunter Robin - Slow going like the next one but has some great visuals,
Jigoku Shoujo - Slow, same thing each episode for the most part but somehow still interesting.
If you haven't watched any of these give em a go. If you have, quote me and give your input. (Not trying to hijack the thread or anything..)

Taking note of that List posted.
Initial D - It's a cool looking car commercial lol,
Occult Academy - Really fun series, good subtle jokes,
Otaku no Video - Can be entertaining,
Fruit Basket - Not my cup of tea,
Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture - Only show to feature crossdressing that I'd probably ever watch...

Beelzebub. Baby demon lord teams up with the most badass guy in the world.

Lots of hijinx and comedy, with a dash of good action thrown in.
