I treat all authority figures with the proper level of respect that their position deserves, and frankly, I'm surprised you weren't taken in for obstructing justice. Just leave the cops alone, man, they're just doing their jobs.

Yeah I'm with you on this one.

OP maybe...and this is just me. You might find it better if you weren't a jerk to people who are doing their job.

You sound like a bit of a jackass in this. They're only doing their job, it isn't their fault. This whole thing about getting at "authority figures" is absurd, firstly the cops couldn't change anything about what was happening, and secondly, making snide comments doesn't help anyone.

If I think they're being retarded I point it out. But I deal with them like any other person I meet. I'll be nice enough, they're doing what they have been ordered to do after all. But if they try to keep me out of my home I will just sneak by them and give them the finger from my window. Unless they have a really good reason to keep me out.

That was pretty funny.

I know how you feel about the overkill of cops. NOTHING happens in my town, so we often get cops with backup to give a speeding ticket.

As for your question, I treat authority with only the respect they have shown they deserve.

Also, stop defending the cops, people. I'm sure they are adult enough to handle someone making fun of them.

I'm glad the cops kept their cool, for their sake. But I personally would not have testified in your favor if they whipped the shit out of you. They where trying to do their job and you were trying your best to be a Douche.

I've never had any trouble with cops, but if you act this way around them most of the time that would be why you have so much trouble. Your description might get you searched, but giving the cops trouble might get you cavity searched.

Yesterday I come strolling home from a long day of dealing with over 500 kids jacked up on Halloween candy to find my street being blocked off by my local police dept. What happened apparently while attempting to serve a warrant for arrest the man they were looking for decided to hide in the attic, because that worked so well for Anne Frank, and because the police did not know if he was armed or not they decided to play it "safe".

Now the reason I critique is because while blocking off car traffic, presumably to clear the road for doughnut runs, they didn't stop foot traffic. For my safety they wouldn't let me enter my house because the house on the other side of my neighbors duplex is where the suspect was hiding out. I attempted to explain, rather loudly I'll admit, that if the suspect is armed it is most likely a handgun loaded with hollow point rounds and that being the case I would be perfectly safe in my home where there is a whole house between the perps place and my own instead of sitting on the side walk across the street where all there is is a single wall to protect all of us neighbors lined up waiting. After that tirade they made sit down on the side walk across the street from my house and in protest I immediately took to smart-assed comments to vocalize my take on the situation.

I believe the entire police force was on hand for this, well over 40 uniformed cops and an entire swat team of 19 wearing military issue combat armor armed with AR-15s, as well as at least 9 other cops and 3 negotiators in plain cloths, who had put on vests. This stand off had apparently been going on since 3:30 and when I arrived at 4:30 cops were still arriving. So I said the first thing that came to mind.

"There must have been a line at Voodoo Doughnuts. Can you guys give me a bacon maple bar? All my snacks are inside my place."

After awhile I realized I had my iPad with me so I started watching movies, as loudly as it would go. This prompted more than a few upset stairs from the guy standing around doing nothing so I said "I could be inside being quiet" after a while "just tear gas his ass I'm cold", later "if you need a flash bang I've got potassium chloride, aluminum powder, and magnesium flakes in my garage"

I made many more comments during the event, got some laughs from the onlookers. Regardless, when the whole thing was over, (the guy gave up, and came down), the SWAT negotiator came walking out (before the perp) and I said "What they didn't have a jelly filled for you, well make sure to pick up a bacon maple bar for me on your way back."

The negotiator quietly got in his car and turned it around but before leaving made a point of stopping next to me pointing and saying "Thanks for your help today" to which I replied "What help?" he responded "Exactly." To that I said "How about next time we do this at your place and you can wait for nothing to happen on a curb for three hours in the cold. You want help, try a stationary bike, it's probably easier on your fat ass than a treadmill"

Then he left and I was free to enter my home.

This isn't my first run in with the cops, certainly the longest, getting searched usually only takes a few minutes after all (as a white male with a buzzed head I very often "match the description"); but every run in with them I've ever had I've been a disrespectful asshole.

Now I ask you fellow escapists, how do you deal with "authority" figures, namely the police. Do you wait patently and hope for the best, do you gawk and take pictures, or do you inundate them with sarcasm and smart-assery?

I also have to say when I heard Gram mention a guy in his attic in Oregon on Feed Dump I almost thought he was talking about this incident for a second.
I like this story, but without an age range I'm a little confused about the context. It may be far funnier depending on your age.

Anyway, I support smart-ass answers to retarded orders, just be careful, lest you be attacked by a cop who then arrests YOU for "disrupting the peace" or "assaulting an officer." Judges can't be trusted to not side with dicks that abuse their power, so just be careful or make sure to film altercations if your state/country allows it.

Oh look who's a little rebel here. So there was a police standoff with an armed criminal and you had nothing better to do than hang around and make smartass comments to the police officers doing their damn jobs? You're a fine person indeed.

also:
more than a few upset stairs
Wat?

I'm pretty sure you were just being an asshole. Standard procedure to ensure that the area is pretty much clear. I'm pretty sure if you did that while I was working (not that i'm a cop mind, but its unreasonable for you to do that to anyone who is just doing their job) i'm pretty sure i'd just want to punch you for being a jerk.

Most cops i've had to deal with are actually nice people. Considering i'm on a first name basis with a few because I have a habit of getting into trouble i'd say that's quite the achievement. Dunno why you didn't just wait patiently like everyone else.

Let's assume they let you in your house, for whatever reason. What if the guy hiding in the attic manages to escape it, and find your house, maybe because you left your light on, maybe because he felt like it, unimportant details, and he decides to take you hostage. This scenario, unlikely as it might be, is still a concern for the Police Department, they have to make sure there isn't even the possibility of collateral damage.

For them, it was safer that you'd be sitting on the street, with them, so they could protect you more easily.

And, TBH, you being an ass doesn't help anyone, I understand that your day might have been long and hard and very tiresome, but that's no excuse to being annoying to other people who are also doing their long, hard and very tiresome work.
Making comments aloud isn't going to make work any harder for the 30 cops standing around outside...If I'm being forced to comply with stupid rules, I'm going to voice my opinion about them.

Besides, if the other houses weren't evacuated, but merely denied re-entry, your hypothetical situation is completely moot.

I don't mess with cops because its a stressful job (and one that usually carries no thank yous for the good things they do). You wonder why a lot of cops these days can be assholes? Its because of people like you who have no respect for the badge they carry. Sure some of them can be powertripping assjacks, but there are just as many if not more good cops who get lumped in with the bad ones.
Misanthropy does not make you cool, it makes you an asshole. Maybe you should go be a cop if you don't like the way they treat "regular" people and try to make a difference rather than just make smartass remarks about how they do their jobs.
BTW, no one thinks you're a hero for what you did. Be glad you don't live in a country where mouthing off to a cop can get you shot or taken downtown for "interrogation" and "re-education". Be glad they also didn't slap you in cuffs for disrespecting an officer of the law, which I'm pretty sure is something they can do. Actually I give the cops credit for ignoring your ignorance and doing their jobs instead of giving in, sinking to your level and tossing you in the back of a car to cool off.

OP: jeez, you're an ass.

The cops were doing a perfectly fine job of doing their job and you can't find anything better to do that sit around whining about being inconvenienced.

So cops in an armed stand off and you make their day harder?

I'm on their side. If they let you go in and something happened to you they would be liable.

So you were a prick to a police officer for no reason and decided to make a thread about it.

....Why?

I don't really think what you've done is something to be proud of. Your response to a potentially fatal standoff is to whine about how you can't get into your house and then make things difficult for the people trying to resolve the situation?

You have more in common with the kids jacked up on candy than you'd probably like to think. Entitled, spoiled, petty, possessed of horribly skewed priorities, and just plain unpleasant.

Just go do something else for a while. 3 hours out of the house isn't going to hurt you.
I agree with these guys, there was no need to be so rude to those cops, they were just doing their jobs and trying to keep the situation under control and the people safe. You could've gone and done something else while you waited, or visited a neighbor or something. I think they showed extraordinary restraint by not arresting you.

I've not had many run ins with the police before, but when I have I've always been polite and tried not to make the situation worse. I know they're just doing their jobs. They have enough crap on their hands already, they don't need anymore crap from me.

It's not going to speed the fucking situation up either. So if they're not letting you into your house then just shut up, or if you have to protest it then complain with some fucking manners. They're being forced to sit out there in the cold too, but they also have to listen to people making snarky comments to them.

ITT: Some guy looks for people to tell him how awesome he is for giving cops a hard time. Fuck da polees! Almost everyone tells him he's a douche.

Sadly, the headline "MAN IS ASSHOLE TO POLICE, POLICE REMAIN PROFESSIONAL" doesn't sell newspapers and bring people into webpages to read,
After reading that, I'm tempted to write a mock story on the website I write for, just to see what'd happen lol.

OT: I treat the police with respect and a level-headed manner. You get all up in their faces, they will not react well to it.
