i find it to be quite repulsive, i dont understand it

i could understand weed because well its not addictive or that harmful depending on method of use as far as i know, and it makes you feel different

as for cigarettes it basically seems like paying someone to kill you slowly and painfully, which is kind of an odd use of money, ive never understood it
Do you eat fast food, or junk food, or pop or 95% of the stuff in grocery stores that are filled with chemicals, pesticides, artificial flavouring? If you answered yes, then you are also paying someone to kill you slowly. (Obesity due to fast and junk food is more potent of a killer than cigarettes now in 1st world countries)

OT: As long as smokers don't smoke in public places ei. restaurants, theaters, stores etc.. I'm fine with it. It's your body, your choice to put whatever you want in it.
i read labels and exercise 5 times a week, the funniest food label ive read recently was the log cabin syrup it said on the front no high fructose corn syrup then i flipped it over and the first to ingredients were corn syrup and liquid sugar

needless to say i lol'ed

Interesting how it's a somewhat acceptable activity. If the topic was "Cutting. I do it because I love it." would people be so accepting?

Personally, I think it's an incredibly selfish activity, because you will almost certainly develop health issues in the long term. I don't care if people smoke, per se, but as far as I'm concerned, they should be denied access to healthcare for smoking related illnesses.
That I can sort of agree with, I suppose... but then where would you draw the line? Denying overweight people NHS treatment? Denying the children of parents with hereditary illnesses treatment?

However, I think comparing smoking to cutting is a bit of a stretch.

I smoke on occasion, but I've never gotten enough of an urge to buy and smoke my own pack, it's just a social thing for me.

Don't smoke, never did.

I hate it being around people who smoke, and as such, I hold my breath as long as possible.

I could care less if you did it privately though. Your lungs you want to destroy, man. Just, don't destroy mine.

I enjoy the odd ciggerette, first smoke was when I was 14 and I smoke with friends, weed occasionally as well, never felt I have had to smoke though, somtimes I will give it a break for a week or so.
There is the whole it will kill me in the future, but so can alot of things. I am not the type that will sit around worrying about what might happen a few decades from now, I could get knocked off my bike tommorrow and killed, I may as well enjoy myself while I still can.

I'm a smoker too.

Used to only smoke 5-a-week when I started about 2 years ago, now I'm on 10-20 a day (upper limit due to having stayed at the girlfriend's where we could smoke indoors...nay, in bed! Oh that was good!).

Gonna give up soon though - it's expensive (I'm a student), it's not good for your health (I run/swim, but haven't been able to this last few months due to a busted ankle) and my girlfriend's best mate wants to quit (so she has to quit, so I have to quit - then all 3 of us can convince her boyfriend lol).

Hopefully will have given up by September. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off into the freezing cold for another fag (damn, I wish I was back at her house!).

It's disgusting, I hate it and you should stop it. I cough LOUDLY whenever i see someone smoking to let them know that I don't care for their smoke. Why on earth would you PAY someone to SLOWLY kill you?
I punch people like you in the face. Hard.

Why should they spread their disgusting dirty germs on me when I'm stood out of the way, down wind, outside? I don't want to catch something and die? Please, fake-cough in private for the good of all our health ;)

Seriously though, people like you piss me off. Have you ever wondered that this might be *why* people blow smoke in your face? Because you make such a fuss about it? Outside the smoke dissipates rapidly and is not harmful to your health - secondary smoke in confined locations might be, which is why most places have banned indoor smoking.

I don't smoke, nor am I friends with anyone who smokes. Not that I hate smokers, but it doesn't help that they stink.

Because I wait at the bus stop almost an hour per day, I'm pretty much used to the smell of smoke.

So while I would even think about smoking myself, I really don't really care if anyone does as much as I used to.

In the case of children with hereditary genetic issues, it's simply not their choice. Obesity is a better example, but even so, it's not quite the same. There's a strong parallel between a person who continues to make poor dietary choices and a person continuing to smoke, but the key difference in my mind is the starting point. Making the decision to start smoking is very clear-cut, more so than gradually gaining weight (or gaining weight as a child); people know the consequences, and they should have to wear them.

Personally, I think the comparison to cutting is only strange because smoking has become a rather common activity. Both are forms of self-harm, and both are about feeling better in some way (somewhat more perversely in the case of cutting, I admit).

You would, it's an addiction.
I hate smoking, it's not fair when I'm walking behind some little sluts in the years below and blowing their smoke in my face so I smell like them.
My mums a chain smoker, the curtains and wallpaper are yellow, people leave our house smelling of it.
When I have my own place they can bugger off outside.

A lot of people have had their views on smoking negatively biased by the world's suddenly fanatical crusade against smoking. It's gotten so bad that smoking is starting to be seen as something of a social disgrace, and those who smoke are looked down upon.

Here's what I know:

Cigarettes: the active ingredient is nicotine. In order to get the full effect of smoking, one needs to inhale the smoke into their lungs. It gives a sudden, powerful, relaxed sensation that lasts anywhere from twelve minutes to an hour, depending on the person. They're horribly, horribly addictive, but if a smoker can control their cravings and make a pack of cigarettes last, they're actually far more economical than cigars or cigarillos (they usually come in packs of about 20, and are priced somewhere between $3-8 a pack, depending on where in the US they are sold and what brand they are).

Cigarillos: small cigars that are usually flavored. Their small size and absence of nicotine gives the illusion that they're less unhealthy than cigars or cigarettes, though they often come in packs of 3-5. This coupled with the flavoring makes it an especially viable option for young smokers and children.

Cigars: usually smoked for the taste of the smoke alone; rarely inhaled. They're large, expensive, and give off an odor that some people find repulsive. Often used by non-smokers for celebratory purposes. Not nearly as addictive as cigarettes, but extremely unhealthy nonetheless. Cigar smoking, to some people, is a hobby, though cigar "hobbyists" tend to be a bit...let's say "snooty".

Generally: smoking is very romanticized, partially through tradition and partially through clever, subliminal advertisement by tobacco companies. It weakens the heart and decreases stamina, and may cause heart disease or lung cancer later in life. However, smoking does not guarantee cancer, and controlling one's habits and cravings should be left up to the smoker. Smoking may also irritate the lungs of people with respiratory conditions, but again, it should be left up to the smoker to be considerate to those around him or her, or not.

Me, I've been smoking for around 8 months now. I started with cigars, but now I've started with cigarettes. I've had the same pack for almost three weeks now, and I still have 7 cigarettes left. I'm being very careful, because I know how addictive they are.

I've smoked somewhat since I was 18. Though I really didn't get into it until I started smoking weed. Don't smoke weed anymore, just cigarettes.

I'm not addicted though. Been smoking for 2 years now. I do it because I love the taste of a good menthol, and the nicotine rush. Usually only smoke half a pack a day though. Stopped smoking 2 days ago because I ran out. Bought another pack this morning.

I smoke simply because I love it. Not sure if I will ever quit.

As for people who hate the smell, It's very easy to cover up the fact you've been smoking as well. Toothpaste or mouthwash work quite well. Wash your hands. Either smoke outdoors or in a moving car with the windows down to avoid having your clothes and hair smell like smoke. And put the butts in a sealed container instead of an ashtray, like a 20oz pop bottle, until you put your trash out.

The last bit is more advice to other people because I hate the smell of used butts.

So How do you feel about smoking?
I agree with everything you said really. I've gone a week without feeling the need to smoke and I only do it just because I enjoy it, I currenlty smoke about 4 a day.

You can shove whatever crap you like into your body - nicotine, heroin, whatever. It's fine by me.
My thoughts exactly. It doesn't mean that I won't sit 20 feet away from you indoors or won't go out of my way to stand down wind of you. I hate the smell of smoke and can pick it up regardless of what you do. You say you don't smell like smoke because x reason but that is false my friend.

I detest smoking, I really do. However I really couldn't give two shits what you do with your life and your body, provided you do it far far away from me.

I'm pretty similar. Only differences are I started at 19 and have been smoking for almost a year. And I used to say I wasn't addicted. I just went a week without smoking cause I was at home with my parents over Easter. It. Wasn't. Fun. I got back to uni 10 hours ago and have already gone through 12 cigs.
If you're on half a pack a day (I'm assuming they're 20 packs) then yeah thats addiction sonny. ***** aint it.

EDIT:

Eew. No offence but I'd chuck out a pack of 3 week old cigs. All dry and gammy bleh. For me a 20 pack can't live for more than a week otherwise they make me feel sick :(
