We've all heard the story several thousand times. Y2K, 2012, and now this.

What if, though? What if this really kills all life on the planet? Are we, as humans going to sit back and let it happen?

Well, yes. That's exactly what we'll do. We are all lazy, you know.

How many times are we going to die next 5 years?
That's what I keep wondering. Asteroid collisions, supercanes, global climate change, second hand smoke, and now this. Maybe we should all start digging our own graves in our back yards.
Or maybe some people should just shut the f*ck up. Just maybe.

Y2k was predicted in the 70's (back when there would have been a real problem with bank computers before they fixed it)

and 2012 is from an ancient calendar(combined with new age misunderstanding)

they just happen to gain media attention within 5 years of when they predicted
Oh. I thought Y2K wasn't predicted till the 90s

2012 is based on a Mayan calendar but in no way predicts doom. Just a bunch of idiots who recently got bored and decided to say "Hm, how can we get a lot of attention? Oh I know, lets say this means that the world's gonna end soon"
the original thing behind y2k was computers cant tell the difference between the year 0000 and 2000 because they only used the last 2 digits in the date. It was fixed well before the media hype.
It was the same stupid people saying this means the world is going to end just with technology to blame instead of some dead civilization.

A great big fart is going to kill us?

If were all going to die, can't it be something cool; like a zombie virus or a biblical apocalypse?
Isn't that buthane?

Note now a few of those articles say "worst-case scenario". Also note that that this is a theory proposed by one guy.

We humans are fatalists by nature, and always expect the worst from things. I wouldn't be surprised if this so called "planet killing" release of methane, if it actually happens, to be nothing more than a small burp rather than an apocalyptic fart.

So this gas bubble is going to kill everyone again? And how small was 96% of the population then, compared to the billions of people in the population now? I think if anything does happen, we'll be fine.
well the other 4% were probably some kind of fish+a few extremophiles.

Looks like a bunch of bullshit.

Just like every other Doomsday theory.
Still sounds like a good excuse to write a book based on said bullshit, sell slightly over a shitload of paperback books and waste all the money on booze.

Uhhh... brb.

So we are all going to choke on earth-fart in six months, then a giant meteor is going to destroy whats left in 2012 and then the climate will become toxic.

the human race must have REALLY pissed off god/allah/buddha/invisible pink unicorn.

Y2K technically did happen although it wasn't remotely as big as people thought it was gonna be. 2012 is just people being stupid (THE MAYAN CALENDAR IS CYCLICAL YOU BASTARDS!), This is a hypothesis based off of past events. While it's slightly more valid than Y2K and much more valid than 2012 there's still no hard evidence that shit will go wrong yet. Still, get to fucking and drinking just in case.

1.People said that the world would end in the new millenium(Y2K). IT DIDN'T
2.People said that the large hadron collider would end the world.IT DIDN'T
3.People say that the world is going to end in 2012. IT WON'T
4.IT WILL NEVER FUCKING END!

*sigh* ANOTHER Doomsday theory. Honestly, what's with all the gloom and doom in the later half of the 2000s? Ever since about 04, hell, even in 00 if you count y2k, it's been nothing but "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!" And every idea they've had so far turns out to be false.
Exactly my point. If it's not biblical bullshit it's pseudoscience bullshit. And none of them have turned out to hold any air. (By the way, this is nothing new. In 1999 there were all sorts of theories predicting the end of the world. I'm sure that there was stuff before that, too).

BTW, the extinction at the end of the Permian was caused by a gigantic meteor.

I'm trying to fathom why it's going to wind up like that. They're talking about fissures forming and belching gallons of oil and Methane. I'm no physicist, chemist, geologist, etc. but I know when I squeeze a zit, blowing the pressure is a GOOD thing. Makes less shit in there and an explosive release later on is unlikely. So with all these fissures blowing all this gas, why is it determined that the methane sea is going to blow at all? What if it just lets out like a pinhole leak in a balloon?

Then again, people are stupid and will go with the immediate fear of the release implying the bubble's popping. So they'll try stuffing all the holes and retaining all that pressure. And THEN Boom. So I guess I should worry about that bubble popping...We're going to treat it like a bloody wound rather than a massive zit.
