The last time I went into a GameStop I was going to buy a copy of Kane's Wrath until I discovered that all the boxes were open and I couldn't get a sealed box. I went across the street to the Fred Meyer and bought it instead. Now every time I pass by the GameStop in the mall I flip the employees off.

What a curious Game(stop), the only way to win is not to play.
For that and the Bert avatar, you win one (1) internet cookie. Redeemable at GameStop, prices and participation may vary.

I only ever buy games at GameStop, I'd be mad to trade there.

GameStop is one of the few game stores we have here. It's there or HMV really and their as bad as each other. Don't trade in very often though and usually shop around for the better price. This being Ireland though, were screwed over on principle.
Will Game not deliver down south?

Or do you not do online shopping?
I never consider game because the game stores we have down south are the biggest rip-offs of them all.
Ah ok, GAME are usually pretty cheap. Amazon are cheaper but HMV are just extortionate. But saying that a guy I was in tech with brought a game into GAME still in the wrapper and they'd only give him about £10-£15 for it when it was on their shelves for £30.

You still only get 2-5$ more if you trade in a new game, I'm pretty sure.
Why would you trade in a new game? You would return it with a reciept
You already have the game, someone else bought a new copy for you and didn't bother keeping the reciept?
Fair enough, but that is a problem with a stupid friend or relative - not a game shop. If the wrapper has been removed they will have to assume it has been used. If not it may be stolen, which is a fair assumption with no proof of purchase.

I think we live in alternate realities. Our HMV is pretty competitive and generally the cheapest place to get games.

Yeah, Gamestop are assholes when it comes to trade-in value.

"Oh, it's a two month old triple A title that costs $60 new right now? Oh, then in mint condition, we can give you a dollar fifty. Wait, there is a minuscule scratch on it that I had to use a microscope to see. Wait, I put that scratch there? Oh well, now it's worth twenty-five cents, unless you ask for cash, then you'll owe us twenty dollars. Thanks for your business!"

Yes, because when people steal, they normally go for the videogames first, and it is normally in exchange for other videogames instead of real money. These are games, not legal crack. Besides, the stolen game will very rarely be new unless they stole it from a gamestore. Since gamestop seems to be the only major gamestore than it means they most likely stole from gamestop, meaning I don't get a decent trade in value because gamestop's security is shit.

There are plenty of ways to steal things, and plenty of reasons. A careless person with an open shopping bag can easily lose something. A new game can cost quite a bit of money, why wouldn't someone take it?

If you don't have proof of purchase, why should they purchase it back at near full price? Where is the profit for them? People need to make sure they keep receipts.

HA! I read the title of the thread and just had to throw down a big ol' "DUH". Sorry. I don't know what other side debates have ensued thus far, because I haven't even read the OP yet, I just thought the title was a little redundant. You probably could have just written "Gamestop" and we would have all gotten the point.

A careless person with an open shopping bag deserves to have the game stolen from them.

Where's the profit for them in taking the game back at full price?

Besides, them making the trade-ins reasonable wouldn't be "near full price" . They gave you 30$ for Halo3 when it costed 55$ Used. I'd be fine with 40-45$ trade in.

So a £30 Console game, not a new game or top seller, that'd probably go back out at £20-25 depending how much stock they have of it (Price given used to vary by store but they now have a central system which keeps track and assigns trade-in prices).

Wrapped is irrelevant (unless they have large amounts out back) as the contents are shrink wrapped and the empty box is put on the shelf.

When I used to work there (a good 5 years ago now) we used to dread the EA sports title season, no matter how much we suggested Pro Evo soccer, the masses would buy Fifa 200x and then quickly part exchange it for something good. After a month or so we'd be up to our eyeballs in px'd Fifa and, because we were overstocked, only offering £15-20 on a game that was still retailing at £45-50

You should have watched Zero Originality - Gamestop is the worst place to buy or trade games around.

Holy shit, I remember when that guy was on Youtube! Thanks for posting it here!

Anyway, I got ripped off bad at a CEX a few months back. I bought a used copy of Half Life. I finally get a chance to play it a few days after I buy it and soon find out the damn thing won't even go past the first load screen for the main menu. I go back the next day to get my money back and they tell me that I can't get my money back, only another copy of the game. I said fine and it turns out that they didn't have another copy. I repeated this process several times to try to get my money back and they never did. They told me that I had to return the game within two days of purchase if I wanted my money back. I told them that the recite clearly says that I have a 12 month warranty on the game and that if they can not fix it or give me a new copy, they had to give my money back. I even had the damn thing to prove it and yet they wouldn't give me my god damn money back. So now I have a $15 paperweight on my dresser.

Gamestop didn't screw you over, you screwed yourself over. They told you they'd give you that much for those games, but you still went with it. They didn't lie to you and didn't force you to do the trade. That's fair play.
