So... why do we all agree Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever?

I have never played it, but I've never really been much of a fan of FF in general.

Wow. You seem genuinely angered by this game.

I haven't played it, nor any other FF game... Oh, wait, I played FFX for a while... Like, 20 minutes. Not my thing, but my buddy Michael loves them. His favourite is the eighth one, though, or whichever has Kuja.

Agree? You're kidding, right? VI was vastly superior to VII, which appears to be a fairly common sentiment.

Also, Kefka > Sephiroth. I can't take a pretty-boy with next to no dialogue who doesn't actually do much of anything evil seriously.

I think that for all it's flaws it was a fairly ambitious game. 3-d was in it's infancy for console gaming, FMV was nearly unheard of and they killed off a main character. For a kid that was pretty awesome. At least i thought so when I was a kid. I picked the game up again for nostalgia's sake and didn't enjoy it as much as I did when I was younger. No that I am old(er) it seems like a mid life crisis is happening if I even think about playing it anymore.

It was great for it's time. When looking back on it, we can't help being biased due to the many advancements made in all aspects of gaming in general, especially in the field of RPGs. It's too bad Square Enix still hasn't improved much since the days of FFVII, otherwise maybe FFXIII and FFXIV could've been great, instead of being steaming piles of crap.

It was a JRPG that made it mainstream in a big way (I cant think of any other JRPGs before that that had a few TV adverts to promote its release) and managed to snowball a lot of hype. Push past that though and its a decent game with an involving storyline, interesting characters (well most of them), good music score and a pick-up-and-play interface.

I like it but its not my favourite or greatest game. Gotta love the chocobo racing though. :D

Well I only played it a few weeks ago and thought it was fantastic, I liked the story and characters even by today's standard (just dont stare at the characters too much). I'am not sure if this is relevent but I notice Cloud seems to be seen as an emo. Now after playing FF7 I dont think this is the case he seems fairly interesting with only one part of the story where he is depressed (at least to me). Its just that every other thing hes in, Advent children, Kingdom hearts he acts so depressed.

Now for the obligatory "its not the best game ever but its good" statement.

i do actually love the game
and i honestly couldn't tell you

The graphics are awful even for a PS1 game
the character relationships don't always make sense
some dialogue has been translated so badly it's laughable
and the story is based on a homeopathic sort of theme involving 'life energy'

but to this day it remains in my top 5 greatest games of all time

I never played it bu I know there are quiet a few die-hard fans. I also know that there are more then a few anti-fans too. I think it's very hard to get a generally feeling for it simply because the people who love or hate are going to be far more vocal then everyone else.

Actually, despite all the crap, the core feel of the gameplay was nice.

It never forced you to do any one thing too long.

Battling was broken up with Materia micro-management with spiffy results, dialog with mystery, and minigames out of the blue.

Compare that to.... diablo.

Go in the hole, hit stuff, town portal, repeat.

FF7 broke up that repitition with stuff like the bike battle or escaping from a gas chamber.

Now that I think about it, it did what Extra Credits was talking about ... forget the name of it, but where you have Act2 -> Act1 -> Act3

Jump right into the action and then drop back story as you go along. The flashes of Cloud's memory made me wonder wtf was going on with him which compelled me to keep playing. And the flow of the game was really nice and kept it interesting.

So they pulled off crap really well.

It was meh, I didn't think it was all that great, but that's a matter of opinion. Was it the greatest game ever? Everyone seems split over that, so probably not.

Was it an important game? Yeah I believe so.

Overhyped? Mostly definitely.

I'm personally not a fan. I'll admit it was important to the progression of FF games, and if I go a bit further, maybe to JRPGs as a whole. It had innovations, and the only thing that really makes me care is the very large amount of extra stuff to do.

I often go out of my way to say it's my least favorite FF, but it's not because it's truly bad, but because it has SO many moronic fanboys. Everyone that likes FFVII isn't a moron, it's worthy of having some people praise it, but so many people defend it like it was the holy grail of gaming that it annoys the hell out of me - and quite a few others, it seems.

4/6/9 are far better than 7 in my eyes. I can never decide which of the 3 is my 'top', though. Probably 4 or 9.

I personally loved it. It marked the first time I'd ever invested more than a few hours into a game. I liked the storyline, hated chocobo breeding, really bonded with the characters. The standout part for me? It had an AMAZING soundtrack. I'm still looking for a copy of the LA Philharmonic's performance of the FFVII Suite. sigh* tifa's theme...

Final Fantasy 7 was the beginning of the end for the series. Still a good game, though... unlike what came after...
