My mom doesn't like anything that takes too much time, or requires getting into too much, so I'd probably go with a casual hidden objects game, like the Agatha Christie series or something.

Happened a couple times. She generally sticks to puzzles and racing. Unfortunately, I don't have particularly good examples of either... and as much as she does like what she's heard of Portal, I'm hesitant about recommending it. Takes reflexes and a lot of people I know (that are new to anything FPS-y, anyway) have trouble even walking around or looking straight ahead.

Hm. Completely off the wall, here, but I'd recommend Geneforge 1. Though I'd recommend that to a lot of people, to be honest.

Something fun and relativity simple, mario, zelda, spiro something of that nature that is fun relitivly easy (or atleast to start with). Or alturnitivly a causal mini game collection like one of the raving rabbit games to show off different type of games...
Or alternitivly alternative get up solitaire, marshong or bejulied.

Columns, she used to play it on the Mega Drive back in the day and thanks to the Sega Classics Collection she can still play it.
Oh god, this and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

My PS2's gotten way more use now I've given it to my parents. Classics Collection for mum, and This Is Football for dad. It's a little worrying...

Ha! This happened to me today ^^ We sat down and played some Super Street Fighter 4. Turns out she was hitting the arcades during her childhood, leading to some rather embarissing defeats on my part >_<

Still, it's nice to play games with your family ^^

I'd tell her to play I Wanna Be The Guy and tell her it's really easy and anyone can beat it.

But I don't like my mum. I don't know where she lives and she doesn't know where I live. I also won't let her know when I get married or when I have my children.

If my dad asked: probably Forza or Gran Turismo.

...For my mom?

...That's actually tough. She dislikes hearing me kill things but I think she'd enjoy that. Not an RPG though. She wouldn't get into it. Hm...tough, really. I think Portal. She'd actually enjoy Portal.
Yeah, I'd say Portal is the way to go. I think she'd enjoy the mechanics that actually make you think quite a bit.

Oh, and my Captcha was "chimney spiter". I don't even...

I would recommended Portal. It's short, sweet, zany, and I think is a perfect first slice of what a video game can offer.

Something like I Wanna be the Guy just to spite her.
Wow from this we can see just how much you love your mom XD

My mom has no prior experience playing any electronic game other than solitaire on windows, so I would recommend something casual but engaging along the lines of tetris or bejeweled. My own mom is completely addicted to play an internet based flash game of Mohjang. I wouldn't want her to have to fiddle with learning how to play a console game that uses both hands and most if not all of the buttons on the controller.
