Sony Slams Wii, 360 For Offering Less Value Than PS3

I really like Sony's aggressive marketing approach, it really works out for them.

If you haven't realized this yet Sony, Nintendo is kicking your bloody ass because they brought in a buttload of non-gamers into the fold. Nintendo is also working on adding a lot more complexity to future Wii games (and possibly their next console).

This just strikes me odd that a company this big is resorting to a childhood mentality of "If I can't see it, it can't hurt me". But then again, I'm not a business major so I might just be missing some huge point there

The dubious value assessment aside I just don't understand why Sony would make a statement like this.

It's a proven fact that consumers don't respond to aggressive and defensive statements / marketing strategies like this. Telling people they are stupid for considering the competition does not calculate to attracting consumers.

Microsoft learned this lesson with the RROD scandal, and now they replace any Xbox hit with the affliction. If Sony would just back off of the "we are teh awesome" and admit their price point might be a little high, they'd earn so much consumer credibility, I bet they'd be able to close the gap between themselves and the xbox.

I would also like to point out dollar value isn't set solely in the overall price, the fact that you can pick and choose your xbox features and purchase them in manageable small components is a type of value in itself. example: I do not own a projector at this point because bulbs for them cost an excessive amount. the projector my buddy owns operates on standard 100 watt bulbs. The projector bulbs last 10x as long, making them cumulatively cheaper. But my buddy can walk out the door and drop the coin for a pack of 100 watts any time at all, and he can afford to pick up more than one back up in a purchase, giving him more value for his projector.

They are smart enough to compare ps3 with a 360 arcade console where they add a HD later. If they compare an elite or "pro" version of 360, then they don't have that much to say about the price. Also it comes with a headset and both hdmi and component cables. But whatever.

I'll be frank. Blu-Ray is not going to overtake DVD anytime soon. Blu-Ray came way too soon. DVDs came along at a time when VHS was a long established format. Many people were ready for a change. Blu-Ray comes along just when DVD was getting settled in as the only format.

I consider this advertising. M$ throws it's weight around in the press constantly. Personally, I'm glad Sony are finally stepping to the plate. People should know the details.

I don't understand why they're bringing the Wii into it. Maybe just to show they're not picking on Microsoft (who of course they're targeting).

You know who else made a chart and statements just like this? SNK. For their Neo Geo system comparing it to 'inferior' 16-bit systems. Not long before it tanked.

There is no comparision between the NEO GEO and the PS3.

I have never met or spoken to anyone who owns a NeoGeo (you, maybe my first?) but I know loads of people with a PS3.

I own BOTH of the consoles attacked by sony here, and i love them both, Also im a student, i cant afford an HDTV, or Blu-Ray movies, i can barely afford games for my Wii and 360, so why should i pay extra money for th blu-ray drive? Until recently i was a PC gamer, therefor had no bias either one based on ownership, my 360 being a present. it came in at around 350 dollars (current exchange rate, im a U.K resident) and came with a HD cable, and 3 games! so i was able to take it right outa the box and start playing right away, also im on an ethernet network, and really cant be bothered with the (marginally) reduced speed of a wireless network

This chart is using figures from a boiled down version of the 360 and the better version of the PS3. They also didn't point out that the online for the PS3 is a lot less user friendly than live and also the Hard drive and all the things that the PS3 has the the 360 doesn't come with the better version of the 360. It really didn't need to point out the Wii sucks, because that's obvious.

Okay wise ass how much do you think it costs to make a PS3? the fact they sell the console at less that what it takes to make it means they aren't greedy you whiny poor bastard.

You wanna talk greedy? Charging for your Online service is greedy.

Charging 20% more of what the game should actually cost is greedy.

You should've quit while you were ahead; last time I checked, PS3 games cost the same as Xbox360 games, and more than Wii games.

I will say that I personally don't agree that MS is overcharging for Live, but I know that others honestly do so I can't truly refute it. And yes, Sony is taking a bath on every console sold so I can't accuse them of greed for overcharging on hardware.

I can (and have) grumped about them using the PS3 as a trojan horse for Blu-Ray, which drove up the unit cost significantly and is contributing to said per-console bath-taking despite it's debatable superiority as a game storage medium. (Yes, you can pack more content on it, requiring less medium for the same content... but it loads content more slowly than DVD, necessitating in many cases a lengthy installation process before play that's shorter (and optional) on the 360 and not present at all in the Wii.) If you want to call Sony greedy, it's in the wider scope of (pyrrhically?) winning the Format War of '08 and not in the hardware price of the console itself.
