Who stops in the middle of trying to save the world to go enter a Blitzball tournament anyway?
Who stops saving the world to play a card game? Who stops saving their kingdom so they can shoot a slingshot in a shooting gallery or to make sure they catch the biggest fish in town history? It's not just FF, but all games, such as the Legend of Zelda references, that have things you can do to split from the monotony of the main story.
And to clear up a couple of things that I was trying to say, yes, I might be a little biased, since my two favorite game genres are RPGs and Sports games, but I was asking people to be subjective on this and not just to say "I hate it so everyone would hate it".
Also, I wasn't saying do a direct port of the Blitzball in FFX...I know it had massive limitations, that's why I said improve it. Here's some ideas that I've thought of:
-Make it a 3D globe to move in rather than the straight line players had to swim on.
-Eliminate having the whole game stop when the ballcarrier was caught to have the little "what do I do?" choices. Rather, just give them moves to steal and evade to do on the fly.
-More teams, more players
-Have multiple modes. Exhibition for single games, Season for a tournament, Career mode that lets you create a player and see how he can grow and get into the league (could have RPG elements, like leveling up and getting better stats), and maybe a Franchise mode, where you create a whole team and see how long it takes to get good players and become a dynasty.
-Multiplayer, and maybe online support.
-Improved graphics (but that's a given)
Like I said, not everyone likes sports games, but if you think subjectively on this, this could have been HUGE for them...first off, I think there's enough of a fanbase for this game to take off, and secondly, it could get SquareEnix thinking on another genre. They've done fighting games, and obviously RPGs, but now they could break into the sports genre, and that's a very lucrative market.
