I'm cautious regarding the Starcraft series. I have a love-hate relationship with the first one, and I don't even play the multiplayer. Now, that's good and it's bad. Good, because it won't bother me if Battlenet 2.0 blows, and I think I'll be better able to judge the game as I like it. Bad, because it means giving money to Activision, and if I really enjoy the campaign, I'll have to shell out more cash to conclude it. I think it'll have to be really good for me to give more of my hard earned cash to Activision

So, as per the usual, I am going to treat it cautiously. I will not buy it opening day, or even opening month. Most likely, I'll try to play it on a friend's computer or try a demo before I buy. I will consider mostly the mainstream critics, since I can already hear Yahtzee warming up his bile factory for this one (which will be entertaining, but unhelpful to RTS fans). Then I'll take it from there.

No...I won't buy it. Starcraft now only keeps me interested for the nostalgia, which is lost if I play a current-gen sequel to it.

Starcraft was entertaining to me when I was about thirteen and didn't know that there were better strategy titles out there that could actually challenge my thinking instead of wondering how best to zerg-rush someone's base. Seriously, for all intents and purposes, Starcraft had the worst balancing of any strategy game to date, and I for one am glad I grew out of it and started playing other games.

Believe it or not, I actually didn't think Starcraft Two was as amazing as everyone said it was. Don't get me wrong, there was absolutely no part of it that I didn't like, but there were parts that I didn't love. For example, playing against other people is fun, but many of my friends just resorted to rushing as fast as they could with Zerg, and I, being one of the few people that I know that actually likes Terran, kicked their asses with entire screens of bunkers, siege tanks, and missile turrets, followed by a wave of Battlecruisers that wrecked their shit, so a there never really was a challenge for me. And when I went on Battle.net, it was the same deal, bunker, siege tank, missile turret, battlecruiser, repeat, peppered by those few times when I went up against people who memorized hotkeys like they were parts of the Bible, who massacred me without a second thought. As for the Single PLayer, well... I honestly didn't like it. There were a few moments of pure genius, like the tense, clostrophobic corridor fights during the Terran and Protoss Campaign, where missiles, Zerglings, and flamethrowers would pop out of every corner and slaughter your troops faster than you could say "What the F-", or the moments in the Zerg and Protoss Campaign where you would mount daring raids with minimal troops against heavily fortified bases, relying on your soldier's special abilities and your own timing to decimate defenses, but apart from those, it usually just ended up with me doing the same dances over and over again. Zealot rush, resource boom, Templar/Archon combo sneak attack, Carrier Wave; Bunker, Siege tank, missile turret, Battlecruiser; Creep entire map, Zergling Rush, Hydralisk burrow defense, Mutalisk swarm; Repeat, repeat, repeat, until finally, I gave up on Starcraft and gaming in general. I only came back because my girlfriend told me that Starcraft 2 was coming out, and all of the bad memories came rushing back. I signed on to StarcraftII.com with a heavy heart, thinking I would find nothing but headaches, when, to my astonishment, I saw an entire game built upon the few things I had truly loved about Blizzard's masterpiece. I, for one, will be truly ecstatic on August 2nd when my Collector's Edition (Yes, I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition, I am such a tool) is delivered to my door.

Sir John The Net Knight said:
It's really foolish to think you can jump into starcraft at this point and have any realistic chance of lasting an entire minute in a game. Most SC players have 10 years experience under their belts. They know the process like clockwork. You're just not going to catch up with those people, ever.

Blizzard makes SCII for pros, because only pros play it.
False. They have a skill based match-making system. Log into battle.net with SC2 and see for yourself.

Wait, was my comment the obvious troll? I am disappointed if it appeared that way. My apologies, I shall endeavor to be less trollish in future comments.

This thread: Crap... you will read it anyways

j/k, battle.net was a huge disappointment considering some of the decisions they made, but I still bought it because it's Starcraft ffs. A high quality RTS with engaging story, millions [citation needed] of online players, and best of all, Blizzard seal of quality.

People being so disappointed by BNET is a testament to what's expected of Blizzard at this point.

The discussion here is simple. Do you think that possibly the popularity of Starcraft has possibly already ruined the sequals? And what do you think of the lack of LAN, the compartmentalization of servers, and hell, while we are at it, the game in general?
I actually haven't bought Starcraft II, personally, nor do I intend to. Blizzard, from what I can see, seems to be aligning its values too closely with Activision, whose business model you have more or less described: Buy or create popular IP, pump out sequels to generate revenue until IP is dead, repeat. It's not a new business model; Capcom did the same thing with many of the Megaman games.

Money cannot be the end to which videogame are a means. Art should exist for art's sake, and I refuse to pay top dollar for a mediocre product simply because it is part of a franchise. Unless a developer shows me that they are taking their creations seriously, and not simply using them to generate revenue, I don't want any part of it until it's eighty percent off or more.

Incidentally, I have pre-ordered Portal 2.
