I was reading my hometown paper online when I came across this article [http://pantagraph.com/news/article_ac7c8fcc-a20c-11de-8cb4-001cc4c002e0.html] which talks about a college student who killed an intruder with a samurai sword. To sum up the article, on Monday there had been a burglary at the house where a couple of laptops and a PlayStation were stolen. On Tuesday morning one of the students who lived in the house noticed the garage door was open and took his sword to investigate. The student saw a guy in there and when the student told him to leave the guy attacked him. The student then cut off the guy's hand with the sword and gave him a huge cut to the chest which led to the intruders death.

What do you guys think? Crazy? Awesome? Crazy awesome?

(Also, I searched and couldn't find anything but if someone beat me to the punch on this just let me know)

Edit: To add a few more details, this happened in Baltimore, Maryland and it doesn't look like any charges have been pressed against the kid but I'll keep looking for updates on it if anything changes.
Motherfucking Awesome!

Jesus Christ? Hand, THEN fatal chest blow? You'd think cutting off a hand would sufficiently incapacitate an attacker.

He should have gone non-lethal then called an ambulance, but hey, what do we crazy Brits know?

And furthermore, for all the people saying it was just self-defense, ONE wound would be self defense, he had no reason to follow up with a second.
Maybe the burglar was still coming at him?

Maybe he didn't have time in those few adrenaline filled life-and-death milliseconds to evaluate the damage done, determine if the injury has had an immediate effect and if not, how long would it be before the injury caused incapacitation, calculate the probability that attacks would continue until incapacitation or in spite of partial incapacitation, evaluate the damage that might be caused by subsequent attacks on him considering the current injury of the attacker, determine what the least amount of injury would be necessary to completely incapacitate the attacker to prevent those attacks, determine how to achieve that injury at that exact moment without causing any more injury than intended, and then, after determining and balancing all those factors....executing the move.

Ask any police officer and he will tell you that people don't stop the instant they suffer an injury. This isn't the damn movies or a video game. You have the luxury of calm, collected hindsight. He was busy pooping his pants and fighting for his life.

The student used his own good judgment to use the sword against the intruder who was attacking him. If the student gets charged, then it will be the greatest example of the pussification of our justice system, yet.

Haven't heard of that one.
That kid's going to prison though.
No way. self defense, the man attacked him. The only thing that's gonna happen to this kid is nicknames like "sensai" or "master Chad" or something else like that. This kid is now "That guy who killed that burglar with a sword."

That's all.

The good thing and the bad thing about the American legal system is that nothing is written in stone and everything can be argued.

I wholeheartedly agree that if someone breaks into your house for any reason they have abrogated their right to life until they leave the premises (and get out of pistol range.) Furthermore it shouldn't be a question of "excessiveness" because as long as an intruder is alive they are a threat. When something like this happens you are so jacked up on fear and adrenaline you can't make rational choices. The kid did the hard thing and now he will have to live with it, that's likely punishment enough.

It will probably be better for him because the guy is dead however because a crippled criminal can easily find a shady lawyer and press both criminal and civil charges until the cows come home. The trials would take months and years and they would parade the poor crippled guy in front of a bunch of dumbass jurors who would feel bad for him and make the kid into the bad guy.

But with the thief dead the cops aren't going to do shit. Unless he has a wife or something who can force their hand, they shouldn't care if someone offs one more thug. So good for him.

A good display of self-defence. I really hope that he doesn't get charges pressed against him.

Well here in Texas if someone comes or breaks into your house without your permission you are aquited of any charges.

God I love this state.
Man, the more I hear about Texas the more I want to move there. Can you believe what the state of New York defines as a so-called "Assault Weapon" (not to mention the shenanigans you have to go through with handguns).

If I could stand all that year-round heat and the possibility of going a full year without NY-style pizza, I would move there in a heartbeat.

I know in some states in the US it is illegal to use lethal force on an intruder. I'm not sure if Maryland falls into that category, hopefully for his sake it doesn't.

Yeah, as far as I know most states in America would call this self-defense under the "protection of one's own property and well-being" segment of that clause. He might get his ass sued in civil court, but I'm pretty confident he won't be rotting in jail.

The intruder deserved it. The man told him to leave, he didn't, and he instead chose to attack the man. All the man was doing was defending himself from an attacker. The fact that he used a sword just made him cooler.
If I'd just chopped someone up with a sword I'd say he was attacking me. Having said that domestic burglars are scum. The psychological effects on victims of burglary can be devastating.

When I lived in texas it made the news when a guy killed a man with a shot gun... through his front door. The "intruder" was banging on the front door (had not entered the building), he was told to go away, when he didn't he was shot without the owner even bothering to open the door. Killed him and ruined the door.

There was an investigation but no charges were made.

I hope the guy doesn't go to jail cause he was just defending himself. Other than that, I think it was all sorts of awesome sauce.

I think like three other people have mentioned this, but how is the student? He was attacked, killed a man, and the fear of going to jail is probably consuming his mind. Forget all the lawyers, get this kid a psychiatrist or psychologist or whoever you see to deal with crap like this. Seriously, this kid is probably traumatized and could be scarred for life if he doesn't get some help soon. And yes, what he did was fucking awesome. He pretty much guaranteed no one will ever try breaking into that house again.

I don't think the kid should even go to jail for this. After all, he did ask the guy to leave, he didn't just run in slicing.

On one hand, it was allegedly in self-defence.
On the other, the kid had a sharpened fucking Katana.

I wonder how this'll turn out.
The US has different laws for edged weapons. Although it varies by state, Maryland's edged weapon laws are like most others here in America.

In Maryland, you can make any sword or knife (as long as it's not a switchblade, naturally) as sharp as you want. You're just not allowed to carry them in public or murder people with them.

Even in California, razor-sharp swords are fine, although they're not crazy about easily concealable knives.

So here in the US, sharpness isn't a consideration as to the legal implications of something.

And this is why Texas is such an awesome state--Had it happened here, the kid would be off scott free, except for what he keeps on his conscience for lopping off a hand and killing a dude. You give fair warning, and if they persist, then you have the right to defend your property.

I hope those beaurocrats in Balitmore understand that.
