Catch-22, Slaughterhouse-five, Cat's Cradle, The Drowned World, Empire of the Sun, A Tale of Two Cities, Bleak House, and I Will Fear No Evil are some of my favorites.
Sci Fi: Asimov's Foundation or Bradbury's Martian Chronicles
Fantasy: Tolkien's Lord of the Rings
Classic adventure: Dumas' The Count of Montecristo
Gangsters: Puzzo's The Godfather
Thriller: Katzenbach's The Analyst
If you like fantasy, but are aching for something fresh, I would recommend The Bartimaeus Trilogy [http://www.bartimaeustrilogy.com/about.html]. It's very witty and adventurous.
If you like laughing your ass off, then look no further than Bill Bryson [http://www.randomhouse.com/features/billbryson/flat/home.php]. He's never failed to amuse me.
Moneyball by Michael Lewis. It's a nonfiction book about the Oakland Athletics and their use of sabermetrics to evaluate players. If you're into stats, it's fascinating.
If you like sci-fi then the hitchhikers guide series is awesome. Also anything by Terry Pratchett (he has a lot). If you're looking for one book, I read Cormac McCarthy's The Road a few weeks ago; amazing wasteland apocalyptic tale of a man and his son trying to get to the south of America after an unnamed disaster. Amazing stuff! It's also very addictive and never out stays its welcome.
The caine mutiny By Herman Wouk. Awesome book about a "mutiny" on a WWII Destroyer Minesweeper. Really though, now that i think about it, i'd go with "slaughterhouse V" by kurt vonnegut. It's funny, and at the same time, thought provoking and sad. If that's not your cup of tea, check out "starship troopers" By Robert A. Heinlein. Surprisingly deep, and raises some fascinating ideas about loyalty, duty, and what should be expected of a citizen. Regardless of whether you agree with it's politics, it certainly makes a good read. Besides, it's here that the hole concept of the space marine first took root in our culture. Though i'd say it's never been explored as it is here. If you want fantasy, don't look any further then "A Game of Thrones" By George R.R. Martin. Read it. That's all i've got to say .
