cosmic banditos about A.C. Weisbecker(last name might be wrong but its along those lines).

its like scarface meets parallel universes. its about drug runners hiding out in columbia, learning about quantum physics, and telling thier tale of how they ended up where they are. its a true story without it being given away easily.(he has to hide it or he'll get arrested)

There are some incredible classics such as bleak house, The Lord of the Rings, Lord of the Flies and so on. I would recommend these for more "serious readers". For someone trying to get into reading I would suggest some newer, lighter material. I recently found "Graceling" By Kristin Cashore captivating.

This extremely sexy girl covered in tattoos came into my store last week and suggested to me the following:

"The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfoss

and

"A Madness of Angels (or the Resurrection of Matthew Savift)" by Kate Griffin.

The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher. Its pretty much fantasy in a modern day setting, about a wizard in New York, working as a helping hand to people and the police.
it's Chicago not New York

as for my recommendations

Imajica - Clive Barker - awesome fantasy
the Night Watch series - Sergei Lukyanenko - awesome russian fantasy series but they call it horror
American Psycho - Brent Easton Ellis
The Rules of Attraction - Breant Easton Ellis
Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way - Brcue Campbell - does a reason need to be given for this?

that's all i can think of for the stuff that hasn't been mentioned already

It's not for everyone, but I enjoyed "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, along with "The Hobbit"

The general book of ignorance, on the back it says "everything you think you know is wrong".

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson is some of the best fantasy I've read in a long time, with a very innovative magic system that ties into the rest of the world and the story like cogs in a swiss watch. It's also the first of a brilliant trilogy.
Jhereg by Steven Brust, also fantasy, is the first in a long series of novels about an assassin. Brilliantly told from a very compelling viewpoint (and there's now eleven books in the series, so if you like it, it'll keep you reading for a long time).
And if maybe you prefer sci-fi, I can only recommend Old Man's War by John Scalzi, which is the first in a series that now spans (I think) five books.
Those are the best series that I've discovered over the last couple of years.

I don't know if it can be listed as a book, but you really should read Watchmen, it's very deep and brilliant.

The Lone Survivor by: Marcus Luttrell, a true story about a Navy SEAL trapped behind enemy lines after his team is killed.

The Legend of Drizzt Series by: R.A. Salvatore, the best fantasy serise in my opinion (its also a long series, like over a dozen books). Start with a book called "Homeland" and go from there.

I know i'm repeating some things others have said, but reinforcement's not a bad thing :)

Magician (and the rest of the Riftwar Saga) by Raymond E. Feist and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss if you like fantasy. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton if you like Sci-Fi. The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse by Robert Rankin or Terry Pratchett's Discworld series if you want something funny.

And if you're willing to try graphic novels I'd recommend the Fables series by Bill Willingham, V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and the Batman: No Man's Land epic.
