There is a difference between tough love and bullying.

Tough love is calling the student out on something they actually did, like bad grades or bad behavior, and giving them at least a hint on how they can improve.

bullying is pestering someone in a way that doesn't help them at all in any way whatsoever.

From what i heard on yahoo news, the teacher said that he was just trying to relate with the students. What a horrible idea, He's not supposed to act like a kid.

Just saw this on Yahoo. Messed up stuff. I can't believe other parents were actually supporting this behavior. He's obviously singling her out. From the look of the mother this is a poor and uneducated family that this girl comes from. Which in turn turns this likely into class discrimination. Makes you wonder what the average income of the other parents are comparitively.
Of course I'm sure other parents agreed with this girls mother, how come this news station didn't find some of them? I'm sure they would've gone on camera since they wouldn't have felt guilty for their opinions like the other parents obviously were.

The teacher has been teaching for 12 years. I'm guessing he's a pedophile and the girl rebuffed his advances.

oh waah. My math teacher used to staple burger king applications to failed tests, and nobody went crying to the media then. These kids need to grow up.
That teacher is full of win, sir.

At the OP:

I laughed when I first read the headline in Yahoo News, but I agree it's going a bit far. Start that crap in high school...only start putting bamboo splinters under figner-nails. I'm sick of all the idiots walking around thinking they're real cool shit just because they disrupt class, godammit...
what makes you think this is even acceptable at the HS level, childhood development extends well into college.. a HS student called a loser over and over again is more likely to drop out of school, start doing drugs, and might even become a criminal.all because a teacher broke his confidence in him or herself..
I think it's acceptable in high school because as a high schooler, I see a lot of the kids that this discussion pertains to. I'm even in the same state as the one where this "loser" business is going on, and while I particularly don't care for North Carolina (or most of the southern USA for that matter), I still see what goes on.

I can tell you that at my school, most everyone does drugs of some type. While I do none of the stuff myself, I hang out with crack-heads, pot-heads, heroin addicts, and pill-poppers, and I know for a fact, that all of them started doing drugs not because of self esteem issues or that kind of crap, it was because they're bored and had spare cash on hand.

I say that the teachers should be a bit more abrasive in high school because I see most students as disrespectful, disruptive of class, and spoiled/lazy. Maybe a good (verbal) slap upside the head will do some good, because God knows that all of this 'postivie reinforcement BS' isn't working on the majority of today's youth.

Bottom line: While personal attacks are a bit petty and harsh, teachers should be able to be vocal with their students.

Case and point: A kid in my middle school's History class would NOT SHUT UP. The teacher, usually a very nice woman (I think her name was Mrs. Cook), couldn't take it anymore (and neither could I) and she stood up and yelled out, "Jamal! Shut the HELL up!"

Jamal never talked out of turn again. And all was right in the world. :D

It's his way of "relating to his students?" How did he pass the teaching course?

Do we actually know that the teacher did it, or could it have just been some other student who wrote it? That sounds like a scheme that I would cook up to get revenge on a teacher I hated.

Also, while I don't think they should be quite this extreme, I think teachers should be more critical. It always annoyed me when they'd tell other students that "it was great, except for [insert long, winding explanation of how everything is wrong]". If it sucks, then say, "Look, I don't think you're too good at math." Tough love, yes, but it's better than fake enthusiasm.
I think the fake enthusiasm is only a problem when we get the 'Everyone's SPECAIL!' crap. I don't mind a 'Good try, but it's a little work' but don't say 'That was fucking amazing! Except that you suck...But YOUR STILL SPECAIL!' because then you get the Age of Entitlement!...D:

Fired? Sounds like the teacher is about ready to quit. Might be doing him a favor.
Teaching 6th grade for 12 years, ugh, no wonder, bet he just doesn't even care anymore.
To the one studying to be a teacher, all I gotta say is: GOOD LUCK! You are gonna need it (and Prozac, and possibly a taser and a bullet proof vest).

See, I'd be a lot more understanding of the teacher if this was like... the student's junior/senior year of High School, because I have a few teachers who joke with their students like this, and no one really cares. But 6th grade? That's just fucked up
This is pretty much what I think. Even if it was meant on jest, the teacher should be able to tell that his students are too young to be able to have this sort of joking relationship with a teacher.

Also, the fact that he deducted credit for "being a loser" kind of pisses me off, because, even though he was most likely kidding, he's essentially leaving the student in the dark as to what she did wrong, thereby giving her no way of improving in the future. I have far, far too many teachers like this, and it angers me to no end.

personally i think the teacher went to far at that age a child is really impressionable and calling him/her a loser or whatever can really mess them up for life. I mean if the girl was in high school maybe saying loser would be a little bit more acceptable seeing as at that point the person has at least some idea of who she is and what her goals are but not when they.re like 12. However i also think that teachers should be a little bit more blunt when dealing with a student who does not perform well, i mean i reads that one school was trying to change the grade "fail" to deviated success which is pretty messed up , seeing as it pretty much makes the student think that he/she knows what he/she is talking about even tough he/she failed. So if the teach simply said "YOU DID BAD" that would be ok, at least to me

I wonder what was actually wrong with the assignment. Did she actually mess up enough to lose 20%? I mean, according to the comment, she lost 20% for simply being a loser.

Also, why did this teacher think it was a good idea to throw her pencil box into the hall. What would that accomplish?

To be completely honest, that is hilarious. The kid and the mom should have just shrugged it off, and if it really was a problem, she should have taken it up with the teacher much earlier.

Well I think that kid deserved it for being a loser.

I'm totally kidding. That was pretty lame of the teacher, but I don't really see what big of a deal it is. The parent is defending her kid too far, such as the part where she said her teacher threw a pencil box and then the other teacher got mad at her even though she didn't do it. That honestly sounds like the kid blaming it on the teacher. But is it really that bad of a thing to do? The teacher was just joking. It's not like the kids don't say that to each other, and knowing 6th graders (I have a sister who's in 5th grade right now) they most likely do. I'm honestly not seeing where you all are getting the extremely harsh reactions from. There is always another side to the story, and I don't think he would have marked off 20% for no reason at all. They probably had many mistakes and as a joke just put that on there.

Calling little kids names as a teacher is a negative, but I hear no mention what so ever as to why the teacher did that, so as an objective observer i cant say if it is acceptable or not.

What if the kid wrote in het homework stuff about Jews going to Hell or how Black people should be hung from trees "Because mommy and daddy said so, so your a stupid teacher". Six year old or not, i'd go on the offensive against that.

All in all im guessing the teacher is a dick, but we are not beig fed the whole story. We only hear a one-sided story here. Be more critical readers/viewers people...

Well something that will teach this teacher a lesson is firing him and calling him an idiot as he walks out the door. This goes for the idiots that sided with the teacher as well.

My English teacher would call students idiots all the time. He got tired of having to explain what paper requirements for every paper so he would print out rubrics for them. If you had a question that was on the rubric he would reply with "I can't help you, you're an idiot."
