Well, I just payed for it on Steam, and now it's in its downloading stage.
Any chance anyone could give me pointers, for example:

1. Whats a good class to start playing as?
2. Any bugs and such I should watch out for?
3. Any general hints or tips about the game?

Also, would anyone like to add me on Steam so we can play together? :)

Lots of noobs play as pyro, but that gets annoying for everyone else in the game. Go for medic so you can watch and learn how everyone plays, and still be helpful at the same time. Look up some "how to play [class here]" videos on youtube, too. There's a bunch of good ones by EvilDaedalus.

I'd reccomend starting out as something centered around fighting like the soldier or the heavy so you can get an idea of how the defencive and stealthy classes like the spy, sniper and engineer work, that way you will have at least some understanding of how they work when you play as them

Try all the classes one by one to find one that you like (and you will almost certainly find one that you like above all others). Don't let anyone else choose for you.

Understand that there's a clue to the gameplay in the name of the game: Team Fortress 2.

Avoid achievement servers (they usually have 'achievement' in the name), and I recommend sticking to servers which are obviously Valve-created maps (i.e. They don't look like crap when you join them).

You'll find it a lot slower than games like Halo and MW2, but it has a lot more focus (and reward) on winning as a team.

You'll find more people to play with [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC"]here[/a].

Have fun :)

Join this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC] user group. Any questions you have about TF2 can be answered by numerous people in there. We have several people dedicated to each class as well, so any class specific questions could be answered in there.

Here's some general advice though;
-Focus on the objective. Points don't matter if your team doesn't win.
-Don't play a class is several people on the server are already playing said class.
-Mix up your strategies so you don't become predictable
-Learn the danger indicators (stickybombs, sniper laser, etc.)

1. A good class to start as? I would say a scout. I, personally, love the scout. The good thing about them for new people is that they have no outstanding responsibilities. I say start as a scout or some other class that has smaller responsibilities until you play a few rounds and see how the other classes function.

2. Bugs? None come to mind.

3. Hints and tips? None that I can really think of at the moment. Sorry.

First two classes I played as were Pyro and Spy so just pick whatever you think will be the most fun for you and w+m1 until you figure out a better strategy and definitely go to CTF-2Fort...I love that map

Since you're in the UK, There's a fantastic couple of servers you should try. I won't list them here in case it's seen as advertising, so I'll PM them to you. All the players in there will help you get to grips with the game.

Other tips:-

A) All lasers are bad. That includes ones that mark a wall (zoomed in sniper), and full on visible lasers (a wrangled (manually controlled) sentry turret).
B) If on the defensive, go pyro and stick around friendly sentries, giving them a regular burst of flames, as well as souring the area. This is called 'spy-checking'
C) Don't worry about getting new weapons. You can get them by getting acheivement milestones (which can be pretty easy), through random drops, and crafting. If you want some help crafting, give me a shout.
D) Always snipe from far away. I've seen idiots up-close to the enemy with a huntsman (bow and arrow) and they've been pulverised by a heavy. Stick at the back with a rifle.
E) Once you get the Cloak and Dagger for the Spy, use it forever, it's the best cloaking watch out there.
F) If all else fails, w+m1 with a pyro and burn it all.

Don't try to snipe all the time, alot of people try to snipe, but not everybody is cut out for it. I think I'm cut out for it because I'm really good, but not everybody has the potential to be a good sniper.

There is some good advice in here and some awful advice.
Just play the game, join the Escapist TF2 group and once you hit a snag in something particular, ask. You'll get a very quick response.

For a general tip however that never fails any playstyle.

Yeeeaaah, but a charged headshot can still take a heavy down right after an ubercharge...which always fun to do.

Oh, and if you're a sniper, the SMG can be more useful than you think, but will do NOTHING against cloaked spies since the update.

Pyro noobs are only effective with the backburner, and not actually using it as an ambush weapon (ie hiding behind soldiers as they advance, then running forward burning when the soldiers die). Especially with this +15% damage boost it has now.

But then again, you do have the airblast pyros, and they are evil.

1. Play as the Pyro and Medic first
2. NEVER use Natasha, The Backburner, or The Razorback
3. TEAMWORK!
4. As a Medic, don't heal just Heavies, an Uber Soldier and Pyro are better in the right circumstanes.

Why are you charging sniper shots fully? The time spent to charge it you could have had -300 damage spread out between two targets, and it's like putting all your eggs in one basket, miss that and you've wasted a lot of DPS.

Also you still want to be taking down the medic right after an uber charge.

Oh dear god, I still have nightmares!

Do what I did when I started playing, play every class and which one you enjoy/ get the hang of. also, avoid all lazers of the opposite colour. They either mean sniper or a sentry under manual control (yes you do that with the wrangler).

I strongly suggest the medic because you don't have to do much other than try to keep your team alive. Just start hosing down the heaviest looking guy on your team and answer any calls for a medic. You will start to learn who each character is and what they do. If you get caught in a battle with someone, your death is meaningless because most medics can't really kill anyone 1v1, so there is less to be pissed off about when that happens. Also, most servers I join are always short on medics, so you will be instantly loved even if you make noob mistakes.
