agreed. this is just stupid. the random item generator is a piece of shit on a white towel. Valve has kicked themselves in the nuts by removing the Milestone achievements. before the generator came in, i just went to an achievement server and got all the items. now, i have to waste time just playing and playing hoping for an item that isnt something i already have.
Made me laugh.

The problem here is that you do not have to have a hat. The game worked perfectly well before them, and seeing as they have no impact on gameplay whatsoever, it will work perfectly well after their implementation. Hats come in time.

Let's resume with the point of the thread, shall we? This refers to The_root_of_all_evil as well, with all due respect. There's no point bitching between the two of you as to the definition of cheating in regards to idling. Keep in mind that this whole issue is purely speculatory, and the point of the thread was to raise the issue and explore the opinions on the ethics of idling, not to ***** about the rarity of hats.
I don't see why it's so bad to idle, it's like saying "you left your game on whilst you walked away and did something in real life... how dare you", I mean, seriously...

I didn't walk-hack for three nights, I didn't speed-hack... I left a program on that logged me into a special idle-only server and rolled a dice for me every now and then whilst I went on and lived my life.
Then why not just, oh I don't know... Quit the game while you go live your life? That's why the 'Quit' option is there you know. Start the game play a while, don't want to play anymore, quit.

Your computer/console does not have to be powered up and online 24/7 you know...

I've idled myself in the past, I don't think its all bad. My point was more about the importance you seem to put on hats. It would be nice to have a good one, sure, but they're far from important.

:p I wasn't bitching, I was just trying to find out what the problem was with having more free stuff that appears at random. If I was going to ***** about cheats, I'd start with all the fecking PREMIUM players that have 4 turrets up at once and still can't play the game :)

Good. Now just play the damn game instead of whining of your lack of hats, 50% of TF2 players.

You know Valve, if you don't want people to cheat, release the unlock system WHEN IT'S FUCKING READY!

Pretty fucking obvious to me!

Seeing as how there was never an achievement system in place for the hat unlocks to begin with I don't see what the deal is. I unlocked absolutely zero items through achievement farming or idling. I did it the normal way, the right way, and no I will not think differently about that.

Play the game and be thankful if you get lucky, but if you don't, either stop playing or stop complaining.

Personally, I think they should apply the same doctrine that's used for achievment servers currently for idle servers. They are, in essence, achieving the same thing.

I personally don't care much for the hats. Sure, they look cool and id be pleased to get one, but i'm not going out of my way to try and get something that I can't even see unless i'm dead.

Boo hiss to Premium players :p Although I do like the feeling of being the underdog. 4 Turrets by 1 Engi= Spy sappin' playground.

I don't see the point in that statement. We know it's yours, we're just giving advice. That or maybe you should just enjoy the good game you bought.

I always thought Idle servers were for people who were just lazy and impatient. I never used Idle servers, and I think this is a good thing.

They actually replaced the milestone achievements. Just not used for the hats.

About the hat thing... its kinda.. pointless. Whining over a simple cosmetic appeal. Basically enough, grow up. It reminds me of the 'recon' armour in halo 3 and the little glitch that removed the hyabusa helmet from people who have got all the achievements.

Be glad that you got the game to play in all its glory. It just eludes me how someone can be on a game for days to get a simple thing, but never actually play the game. Whats the point of it all other than waste your life away?

I can not believe people are still whinging about hats. Who cares if they are rare to get, it makes it more interesting when you actually see/get one. They do nothing to the gameplay, it's not like they have included a rare, goldengun-eque type of weapon that is completely unbalanced, that only 1/10000 players recieve.

Oh no you have to actually play a game to get an item that gives you no advantages and is purely a cosmetic item like the rest of us do. My heart bleeds for you.

If you are really getting this worked up about that then I suggest you step away from your computer and re-evaluate certain aspects of your life.

I think if people are playing tf2 just for the hats... you're playing the wrong game. The whole game for you should not be about playing until you get a hat. Just chill and enjoy blowing stuff up and spraying wildly with miniguns. Hat's are awesome.. but I think we need to take a reality check and remember why this game was so fun in the first place, before hats and unlockable weapons were even pipe dreams.
