These are terrible AAA games, they aren't terrible games but they have no right to be called AAA when they try to be two things at once (most of them) and thus kill one of those things in exchange for the other or they just try too hard or too little.

Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3 (Yeah I went there.)
Halo Reach (Hello my name is multiplayer and I am the entire basis of this game)

Call of Duty (Every other)

Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2

Killzone 2

The Witcher (But was it AAA?)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
I haven't played the vast majority of those you've listed so I can't comment on them, but these two look out of place. The Witcher (I assume the one you mean is Rise of the White Wolf) was far from being a AAA game, and yet it was rather good aside from the slight clunkiness of the controls.
Oblivion has been widely acclaimed as a genuinely great game, just not as good as Morrowind.

Reviews are as accurate as any other opinion based on almost entirely subjective characteristics. If you agree, it's spot on, if you don't, it's out to lunch.

I sincerely doubt there will be any games that the community near-universally disliked, despite how vocal some are.

Something to consider, it's hard to gauge how much dislike a game generates when so often folks will formulate a heated opinion about a game before it's even released. Example: the upcoming X-Com, many folk already hate it, despite the fact that they haven't played it. Odds are that it doesn't even matter how well X-Com is executed as a video game, they've already made up their mind to hate it.

There is a cliche out there about opinions and assholes.
You just won the thread. It irritates me when people decide they hate the game without ever trying it. Even more so if the reason is "it's overrated". Yes, people often talk about slightly above average games as though they are godly. Because they obviously are a very good game in THAT PERSON's subjective opinion. And no, they are not wrong. The only way to be wrong is to judge something you know nothing of that is solely opinion based.

Well, to answer the question of "AAA games nearly derided by everyone but liked by critics", I see some very good reviews of Final Fantasy XIII...yet everyone I talk to despises it.

I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned "Kane & Lynch".

I'm going to add "Splinter Cell" - all of them.
There was a game there, it had elements that should have been fun, but the game was nothing but frustration for me.

Just to be brutally honest; "Red Orchestra"
It should be a great game, but because its online only, the game can't provide what is needed for an enjoyable game; about 40 dedicated friends.

I'm sure there are some more that I can't remember.

you see this is the problem, no-one like the same things, the posts above demonstrate that perfectly.

You've got people hating on games that I love, but that's their choice.
I could put down some AAA games that I thought were shite, but then someone else will pop up and say "hey I love that game"

So Instead I'll smile and walk away!

I personally have a hate-on for the Modern Warfare series (but I'm going to own them all, go figure).
Know that feel bro...

Well Far Cry 2 comes to mind. While I do enjoy it somewhat, its tedious and definitely not what the reviewers made it out to be.

Fallout 3 is one that I can sort of agree with in terms of Reviewer-Fan disagreement (I Side with Original story arc fans, but I do not think that Fo3 is a bad game in any way, just average, clichéd and poorly written) comes mainly from the story perspective. Again, its not a bad game at all.

Dear Sir: you just did what several recommendation threads couldn't: convince me to buy Recettear. Or at any rate, play the demo.

Remember those, AAA publishers? Those things you used to make to convince people that your game will be worth playing by giving them a small taste of the gameplay, rather than just the art style and animation quality? Why don't you make those any more? It doesn't hurt you much to get a programmer or two to spend a couple days making a version of the game with the first couple of missions, which you can then release online for free to get people interested in your game. These days, you just release a trailer that takes out all the possibly-bad bits and say 'Ehh, good enough, everyone'll want this game even though they don't know how it plays, gullible saps!'

(Never mind that you tend to be right anyway...)

OT: I tend to avoid games that the rest of the community does, so I don't often play real stinkers.

Indie-gamer much? :p

You know, he asked for AAA games that got a good reception from critics but were shot down by the gaming community as a whole.
Sure there may be some merit to argue some of the titles you just listed, but... There are some of the most successful games ever on that list too..

But anyways..
On topic I'd like to state Dragon Age 2, which I personally have no problem with contrary to...well everyone it seems.. And Far Cry 2, shit sucks! I mean, sure it's common nowadays, but why the heck does every publisher rush out unfinished, broken games? Everything is terrible in Far Cry 2 and I'm not saying it would've been better if they held it for a couple of months, but.. at least the AI would be a bit above amoeba instead of below.

Lackluster and horribly buggy to the point of unplayable are not characteristics of AAA.

No, just quality over quantity.

I understand the reluctance but the situation remains that those games received acclaim by the gaming community perhaps but if you focus on the fact I said sacrificing one thing over the other and not doing something well enough, then those games fall into that perfectly.

Stop throwing SP campaigns into MP games so I can stop buying them, make up your mind and put your attention to one thing. Or, just stop calling it the best game, but all those games had horrible multiplayer issues if it was a feature as well.

Hahaha you defended Killzone 2, which was the literally worst game and design implementation that I've had the punishment to play. The others are lackluster, imbalanced, improperly designed, have horrible plots or just throw in campaign as an after-thought.

You're the one smoking crack.

I'm gonna have to side with Juk3n. You really are smoking crack.

Or you've missed the point of the thread ENTIRELY, considering he asked the following...

I'm sure that there have been, but I can't think of any...
Gaming community, not your own opinion which seems to be "POPULAR GAMEZ R SHIT!"

OT: Shrug. Most have already been said, to be fair.
