Actually, Nintendo does. If he shows up to any events with that team, he'll be booted out faster than he can say "Pokemon".

The point is, it IS cheating. Whether you're okay with cheating or not is up to you, but that doesn't change what it is.

I say you're only cheating if you build a team that would otherwise be impossible, since that's the only way you'd have an advantage. The only grey area I see is stuff that only affects single player modes (collecting etc,) and that's not really cheating because... well... you'd be cheating yoursef

I say go for it. AR away. :)

Except that is the problem. For people who don't live near major cities on the West Coast of the USA, near New York City, or in Japan, many of the events simply do not ever happen for them.

There was no Arceus or Darkrai event, even during the movie for many people. If you don't live in Japan, you didn't get the chance to get the Celebii, Mew and Shaymin Event Items that were being handed out like god damn candy.
The Arceus event was at Toys R Us. Are you really going to try to tell me that you don't have a Toys R Us? Celebi was given away at Gamestop, and offered over Wi-Fi to anyone who has a wireless router as well. Mew was only given away over the Wi-Fi last summer. I don't know how much more convenient Nintendo could have made it for you.

Mo? then who gives a damn. Your copy of the game, play it as you see fit.
Pretty much this. Unless you're using it to gain an unfair advantage against other human players, it's ultimately your own gaming experience that's effected. So if you don't feel that doing this ruins the experience for you, than who cares what your friend thinks.

I live by the simple rule: It's only cheating if there's multiple people involved. If it's just you, then who cares how you got them.

Personally I question your need for justification via an internet forum.

Yes, but I was assuming he was only going to use this AR for personal amusement rather than using it to enter a tournament which from the sounds of OPs argument it is a good assumption.

Yeah. But Nintendo also tries to program their new DSes to stop ARs and similar cheat devices from working. I'd say it's a safe bet that Nintendo doesn't want people cheating in their games.

I went 7 different Toys'R'Us in 3 different major cities on the East Coast over the course of the Arceus Event; no one at any of them any WTF I was talking about.

Same with the Gamestops for Celebii, and the Celebii never actually happened for much of the US; you would simply get an error message if you tried to obtain it, or the item would flat out not trigger the event.

Mew could be obtain from Wifi for short time...but there was no notification ever to anyone about it. In addition, they give Mew out like he/she is some kind of cheap hooker in Japan.

It still doesn't change the fact that they are not readily avaliable to everyone, and to many people not at all; and the fact that you can't do anything to force Nintendo to make it avaliable to everyone is more annoying. (They're protected from lawsuits or legal action because they are in a different location, its "technically" avaliable through extraordinarily limited means).

While thats the other issue; if I ever to go to an official event of kind, I would get thrown out, because even though my team would be completely legal (I'm not using to actually make illegal Pokemon here, no WonderTombs or anything like that), the manner in which I'd have to get them would get me disqualified, even though I'd have no actual advantage.

They're under no obligation to make the Pokemon available unless they want to. It still doesn't make cheating any less cheating. I'd actually love to see someone try to sue Nintendo to get them to re-release Mew or something. I'd be curious to see who fell over dead from laughing first, me or the judge.

So here's a crazy idea: Put up with the new Pokemon for long enough to finish the first gym battle. Then ask the Escapist community to trade you the ones you want. Many of us can breed the ones you had before, and just trade them over the Wi-Fi. 100% legal Pokemon, and you can play through from there. It won't replace your lost legendaries, but I'm sure you can get your base team.

Yes it is cheating. You are using a device specifically meant to hack the game. I can understand why you are doing it, but it is still cheating. You were supposed to start with tepig/oshawott/snivy, not cyndaquil. Cheating to get pokemon that you are unable to get in the game is still cheating.

It doesn't matter if the conditions to get them are ridiculous or even if it is no longer possible to get them, because that was the point of making them event only pokemon. It is still cheating if you are doing it to unlock something that will eventually be unlocked anyway.

I don't really care if you are cheating (which you are), as long as you don't use your "illegitimate" 'mons online.

TL;DR: It is cheating, but if you keep it out of multiplayer, it makes no difference to me.

Its cheating if you use it to make you impossible to beat in battles against people. But in a single player game, what you do to increase enjoyment is your own buisness.
I want to catch every single pokemone up to Gen 3, but I intend to "cheat" to do so. How? Simply giving myself the promotional items for the boat so I can legitmatly catch Mew, Jurachi, Celebi and Deoxys.
Not my fault Game Freaks set impossible goals for us. Gotta Catch Them All? Fine. But Ill need aid.
Those 2 bolded words. They contradict each other. If you are cheating you are not getting it legitimately.

From my something like ten years of Pokemon experience, I can tell you that pokemon gets less fun when you have more stuff. Most of the game's fun came from finding a pokemon at low level and training it up while growing an attachment to it. When you become an unstoppable warrior in your little super creature world, you suddenly become bored of winning every battle with no challenge or satisfaction. The biggest reason I even buy new pokemon games is just because I want to start a new story from scratch. After beating the elite four and catching all the legendaries (for trophies, not battling) I just, stop playing. There was one occasion on Sapphire where I raised a team of lv100's and completed the pokedex, but that was back when I didn't have a life (or friends)

So I believe that with action replay your just cheating yourself out of your own fun, so go nuts.

Fine, Im cheating. It aint wrong though. Game Freaks essentially sold me an incomplete game. They can shove their promotional items that I can rarely get outside of Japan (and less so now since the game is old).
My view of bad cheating would be if I just start the game, and use the AR to GIVE ME all the Pokemon, at lvl 99 with max stats and the ability to use any move regardless of type.

The game is designed to be balanced for the set starters and the pokemon available at the given point of time, so having different pokemon may throw the difficulty curve off. That said, as long as you don't use maxed out AR pokemon in multiplayer, it will only effect your enjoyment so who cares?

I wouldn't say it's "cheating" per-se, but I'd advise against it, just because I reckon it'd take away from the game. Most of the fun of playing a new pokemon game is going through the trials and tribulations set in the story.
I'd advide you use the AR after you finish the story. Think of it as a reward.

Also, you really think this looks stupid? Because I reckon it's sufficiently tits and/or awesome. I thought the same thing as you when I first saw the new pokemon, but I've grown to accept and really enjoy fighting new and exciting things in the game. . .

. . . Like Maractus, the awesome dancing maracca cactus! And lets be honest, is it really any stupider looking than most of the older pokemon?

Well lets say for intense we were talking about winning the Olympic 100 meter dash instead. You and this other guy are the only real competitors and have a shot at winning the gold. Lets assume you two had entirely equal muscle masses/strengths in all places. Now lets say he trained his ass off doing whatever Olympic athletes do and you just shot up steroids. Would you say that you have the advantage? You have everything he does; you just got it a different way.
