Far Cry 2

I was expecting Fallout 3 meets GTA in Africa.

I got... lots of endless driving.
Yes, dear god, a thousand times yes! That game was just fucking awful. My biggest letdown by far. God knows why it got the ratings it did.

When I got Everquest 2 and spent at least 2 days downloading the massive massive massive amount of patches. Then my graphics card wasn't good enough, so I waited until Christmas (which was about 2 months away). Got the graphics card, all well and good. Whoopsy Doodles, the game isn't even that good at all. Fuckity-bye, eq2.

It probably wasn't the biggest let down of any video game I've gotten, but the amount of time I had to wait and all the build-up really made for one shitty experience.

Half Life 2: Episode 3.

I'm rather disappointed it doesn't exist. Even more so when Valve decides to work on Left 4 Dead 2 instead of doing something useful with their time.

This as well. They also have the time to work on Black Mesa: Source, an exact copy of the original HL with the updated source engine, just because they can.

Knights of the old republic. I dunno, it's just that everyone says it's a fantastic piece of software, and then I found it to be average AT BEST. Madworld was also just kind of same-y to me, and the art style sounds good on paper, but makes the action hard to follow on camera.

Also, while the multiplayer and SpecOps met my high expectations, I was really let down by MW2's single player. It hit me even harder because my friend who's a huge CoD fanboy told me it was way more epic than the first one, and while it was, it came at the expense of telling a realistic, gripping war drama like the first game.

See, the problem is that when I dislike a game, it kind of disappears from my memory pretty quickly. I only remember games I enjoy (some kind of mental defense against game-related suicide), unless the game was bad in a comical way.

Although, I can say I was extremely disappointed by UFC 2009: Undisputed. I'm sure people who don't do martial arts could enjoy it, but as a black belt who's studied 3 different martial arts (including Muay Thai and Brazillian Jiu-jitsu, so this is an area of expertise for me) I was shocked and enraged at how utterly unrealistic the game was. It was still fun, but I expected a martial artist's cream-dream.

Also, Dragon Age. Again, I enjoyed it immensely. But the story wasn't nearly as good as I expected it to be, and it didn't take me long at all to discover that they'd just taken Star Wars: KOTOR and slapped a fresh coat of "Fantasy" over the old coat of "Sci-Fi"

Yeah, Kotor's one of those games where you have to be in it for the story. If you try to judge it on the gameplay, it doesn't do so well, but the story's fantastic. In fact, I think that's a pretty common trait for Star Wars games (The exception being the Jedi Knight series, which had pretty fun combat and The Force Unleashed, which I thought just sucked.)

Because (Co-Op + the RE experience / Motercycle Zombies X Daylight) = Shit

Elaborate on your posts please good sir. This also goes for all those other game title only answers.

The biggest disappointment for me is the continued lack of a sequel for Jet Force Gemini, but if it has to be a real game, then I will go with every Mario kart since 64, with the exception of DS. I want one where every vehicle is viable, items aren't completely crazy, and the tracks are actually fun to race with great repetition.
as you wish...
I purchased L4D2 for 60$, and I simply didn't get what I payed for. To me, personally, it was an expansion pack. Needless to say, after finishing all campaigns within the first night of getting that game, I was disappointed.

Psh, GTFO guy. L4D2 is a great game, go play No Mercy for the millionth time and cry more.

OT: Farcry 2 is still the game that has not only been the biggest waste of my money but the biggest disappointment.
I'm not going to "go play No Mercy for the millionth time". I won't because I played it two or three times, and it became boring after that. That's why I didn't like the game. L4D1 was fantastic because it was a new game. L4D2 sucks because it isn't new. It feels and plays like an expansion pack. The game also stole my last 60$, and that, sir, is unforgivable.
And what do you mean by "cry more"?

Because it was made by Ubisisoft, who mysteriously always get high end reviews even from sub-standard games.

My theory is they send hookers and cake to the critics with a little note syaing if they don't score Prince of Assasin's Disney 2 highly, they'll wake up in a river with concrete shoes.

There have been some big ones, but I think Aion stands out

For an mmo, the story feels force-fed, the graphics, scenery, and animations were very well done, but the core combat felt like marching through molasses, nevermind being bogged down by more abilities than you can shake a stick at. And it was a huge grind.

Though now, if I had known what koreans are capable of, it wouldn't have been such a letdown.

Same here

But nothing compares with Spore

I will not terrify you with descriptions of how I feel about this piece of long-procrastinated piece of poo, but I will simply say that if I ever, EVER meet Mr. Wright, I WILL punch him.

Just once, mind you. And this isn't a "I will merc that fucker" bullcrap statement angry people make, I solemly swear I will biff him on the nose with a vengence
Save your anger, good sir. I'm fairly sure we can lay pretty much ALL the blame for Spore directly at the monolithic evil bastards of the entertainment industry: E.A.

Their fucking up of Spore was so bad that I believe Will Wright went off and FORMED HIS OWN COMPANY in protest!

I too am angered at Spore being...significantly less than previously indicated. But you can clearly see two years ago, they had everything there...and I refuse to believe that Will Wright would just fuck his own dream baby up like that.

So, DAMN YOU EA!

DDDDDDDDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

Also, my biggest disappointment was Homeworld 2. Lame ship designs, dumbed down combat, poor story.

Bleh.

Half Life 1, 2, and episodes 1&2.
Portal
L4D
Spore
Medal of Honor: Airborne
World of Warcraft
Age of Mythology
Fallout 3

MW2 didn't make the list because I expected it to be the steaming pile of mediocrity and money milking it turned out to be.

Smash Bros. Brawl. Admittedly I don't even play the wii all that much but I did love Melee to death, it was a fun game that with friends you could waste a ton of time just having fun and laughing. The hype for brawl was what it took to make me stop falling for any hype after for all games. After an ungodly amount of time with a ton of pointless delays this turd is shat out. Slow, clunky and just all around unfun. It takes forever to kill people, every character, even the fast ones, are slow as hell and the inclusions of 'bosses' and ridiculous requirements to unlock things just rendered the game the least fun thing I'd played on the wii up until then even compared to the bloody opening to Twilight Princess. But hey, it had online that'd be fun right? I could play with my friends across the world! However amid the mire of friend codes I came to the realization that even if you had the best connections the game would lag like a ***** every time you played online. The wii in general is pretty bad, hell the gamecube had better games, but Brawl will forever be my biggest let down simply because of how big the hype was, how excited I was for the game and how long I'd been following it. How badly I wanted it to be good and fun. I stayed up past fucking midnight waiting for a release like a bloody retard for it too. Only to find out that it was an utter piece of shit.
You and I are on exactly the same page, same column even. Everything you just wrote goes for me as well, literaly!

What did you think of Zamus making an appearance? I reckon it is such a shite move because she was kind of the reward to see her without the armour when completing the Metroid games ,and to top it off she is stronger with out the suit!

Off topic, BJJ is awesome. I was at a party and a friend of mine (who is like the under 18 pan-pacific BJJ champ) got drunk for the first time, and I swear I was so shit scared because he thought a good party trick would be to knock people out and then revive them again, and then he started to pull people to the ground and wrestle them, funniest and most terrifying moment of my life.
Big letdowns would be Mirror's Edge, I wanted some good Parkour but what I got was constantly being hounded by ridiculously strong enemies and a system where I often did not know where to go. Also Half Life because my adolescent brain cares not for aged graphics.

Scribblenaughts. That game's controls were so fucked up.
Same here. I thought that the game would be the next big thing, but it was a big letdown after I experienced the horrible controls.
The only thing I could think while I was playing that game, was: why couldn't this be on the pc?

I mean, seriously, it would work perfectly, and would get rid of all the problems I had with that game.
