Final Fantasy XII.
bland characters, average storyline and i loved the ATB system.
it just couldnt compete with the others. So much that its the only Final Fantasy game i have ever taken back

Biggest video game let down of my life? About 75% of the post are picking Current gen games but I doubt they are they worst. I could be mistaken. As for your topic, PN.03. That was one of the few games I was wanting and waiting for and when I got it, it put me to sleep. It was very boring.

At the time? When it came out, my biggest let down was Half-Life 2 Ep 2 - it just felt so... stagnant and unimportant. The plot basically advanced from nowhere to nowhere, introducing a major character this far into the overall story is a dick move in my book, and the set pieces just felt like Ep2 was going through the motions of a better HL game.

Now... I can't believe I'm saying this in an Escapist forum, but... HL2. HL2 was a good game, don't get me wrong... but I played the entire HL series in a row, and HL2 just seemed to have lost all of the spark and fun of the original under thick layers of physics effects and polish.

pessimistic thread is pessimistic. But very well.

Team fortress 2. And yes, I may be saying that to spite all the people that posted in this thread that laud the game, but I also say it because I bought the orange box just to play it, and my little brother has clocked more hours on it than I have in any other game over the past year.

Two Worlds

That game alone taught me to not give some games a chance even if the reviews say it was decent at best.

Modern Warfare 2. COD4 is one of my favourite games of all time, and i was hoping the sequel would be even better (or at least as good) Instead, we ended up with something that looks like Michael Bay was involved with the story and a seriously unbalanced MP. The game still has its moments, but it just didn't match up to the expectations/hype/review scores IMO.

Fable 2. Everything really failed to come together for me. The combat was... Passable, which was the only truly redeeming factor.

By and large, the game just didn't sit well with me.

FFVII. It wasn't the first FF I'd played, and after hearing nothing but hype and good things, and pretty much being told forcibly to play it next, I was actually left wondering if I'd mistakenly picked up the wrong game. Eesh.

Battle for Middle Earth. I was a huge tolkien and RTS fan at the time, so the prospect of a Lord of the Rings RTS was geekgasm in a game box for me. I don't think i really need to explain how the game was shit. I cleverly repackaged it into its box and refunded it the same day (it was a PC game >_>), I was that disappointed.

BFME2 at least gave you something playable, but the first game had left such a bad taste that I skipped it.

I agree on Spore. That game had a lot of potential, but basically I think they were too ambitious and had to dumb it down too much to make it work.

They tried to make a Sim Universe / Sim Evolution game and ended up with a sculpture / art program with side games attached.

MGS4:GOTP. I am by no means saying that it was a bad game, (it made my top ten list) but after seeing the trailers and waiting in anticipation for three years, the end result was rather different from what I expected. The story, (although even more epic in scope and length) was badly laid out, the script was in need of an editor and the intelligent health system from MGS3:SE was missing, replaced by half-hazard attempt to create nostalgia. Remember, it was by no means bad, it just did not live up to my expectations.

I think part of the reason for this is just memory, but I also think a big part of it is that games are promoted and hyped a lot more than they used to be. Some of them now have movie-level budgets and the marketing that comes with that, and the inevitable let downs that creates.
