DAWN OF WAR II. It really was. But the Campaign is pure-gold! Except my save data is always deleted so...

Oh, how could I forget about Kingdom Hearts? I was so excited, an action RPG where you, Donald and Goofy go around fighting Disney villains on their home turf in a quest to rescue Mickey. I got it the day it came out, popped it in, played for a while, was blasted with a near-lethal dose of anime, got a bunch of Final Fantasy bullshit thrown at me, experienced nothing that was anything remotely like Disney magic, got pissed, put it on the shelf, never touched it again.

Kingdom Hearts 1. I played Kingdom Hearts 2 before I played KH1, and absolutely LOVED it. Heck, I STILL do. Still my favorite game of all time.

But, it seems that ALL the KH fans think that KH2 was absolutely terrible, and KH1 was infinitely better. Since I thought KH2 was the best game ever made, I took it as KH1 being a masterpiece crafted by God himself.

So, resolved, I bought KH1 for twelve bucks at Gamestop...and absolutely HATED it.

Really, the graphics were awful, the gameplay was dull, the combat was sluggish, and pre-pubescent Sora's voice sounded like my eardrums were being ripped out of their sockets by a pointed, cold steel claw coated in acid. And that's the nicest thing I could say.

Overall, KH1 taught me that 90% of Kingdom Hearts' fanbase are idiots with no taste. Not that I needed any proof of that, given the stuff you see on DeviantART...
Being a KH fanboy..... warning..... KH2 is based after the first, and Sora is older with a more mature voice. Also, the graphics in KH1 are worse because it came before KH2. (obviously). Of course the second is an improvement over the first, but the gameplay never became repetitive with the attachments and special moves that you can aquire in both games. Just a reminder, if you play a sequel before the original, the original will seem awful, i know from experience. (Oh, and i'd prepare a flame shield for more KH fanboys)
A good 90% of KH fans are still pretty retarded though.
Probaby because they play JRPGs
i don't, except for this special one that they have not created a third one for.

For me it was probably LOZ: Windwaker. I was so dissapointed at the more cartoonish direction that they went with the game. Now, however, I think the game is amazing and I love the art style.
That was pretty much the reaction of the LoZ community.

OT: Hmm...FF7. I played it after hearing all the hype and mouth-frothing over it, and was very disappointed by how mediocre it was.

Up to FF8, I was a FF nut (with the glaring exception of FF5, which I find horrid). FF8 was a different beast than the others, but I didn't mind the system and the characters and story were very appealing to me.. then FF9 happened. Fugly character designs and a crap story that was just a forced reaction to the FF8 whiners. FF10 was good but not spectacular, and I never did get into playing as Tidus (really the only characters I liked were Rikku and Yuna to some degree). 11 should have never been a mainline FF game. I'm still bitter about that. 12 made the series into an MMO wannabe and totally lost the character focus that I had loved from the earlier games. And now 13 sounds like a totally linear progression of hall-> cutscene -> hall ..etc. *sigh*
Forced reaction to FF8 whiners? Thats the first I've heard of that. The story was rooted more in FF's old roots of...well, fantasy. As for the character designs, fair enough. Although they have a lot more personality than what FF7 churned out.
Not sure if you were around at that time or not, but I remember the backlash that FF8 (and to a lesser extent FF7) received when they came out. Everyone and their dog were complaining that the series had gone too far into sci-fi and the story/characters were too far removed from what the series had been like on the SNES. I can't recall if there were any mentions of boycotts or petitions filed, but given that the internet at that time was still in it's infancy, it was a massive "fan" response. So Squaresoft basically said, okay with FF9 we're going to go back to what you used to like about the series. FF9 was hailed as a return to form by some, something of an ode to what FF "used to be," but a major mistep to me and some others. The funny part is that even for those who did like FF9, the series just went back to the sci-fi fantasy mix with FF10 anyway.

I'm going to have to say Force Unleashed.

I was really excited for this game. The graphics and physics engine looked great, as well as the story. However, when I bought the game, I was very disappointed. Even though I got what I was promised, the game also had clunky combat, had too many quick time events, and was way too short.

Thankfully I learned from my experience: don't get games for looks, get games for fun.

The entire set of Half Life 2. I wasn't expecting too much after beating Half Life, but after all the praise it got, I found it to be downright terrible.

It's nearly impossible not to have more personality then FF7. The characters had virtually no personality or character development outside of basic character archetypes. Hell even the game's villain isn't half as evil as people made him out to be. He can't even be half of what Kefka was.
True. Didn't he just pretty much incinerate and enslave the planet for his own ego? Never played it.
I'll spoiler this, but Kefka does something halfway through that made FF3 (not calling it 6, my cart says 3) that makes FF3 the only JRPG I've ever liked outside of Earthbound.

He actually succeeds in ending the world.

He was an over-the-top and cartoonish villain but he worked because he didn't just do horrible things because he was bad and therefore must do bad things, but he did because he was out of his goddamn mind and had absolutely no moral compass.

Half-Life 2.
Everyone made it out that it would change my life, redefine FPS, or be really intelligent. It wasn't.
Technically, though, Portal is in the same universe and that is one of the best games made. Karmatically even?

Oblivion must have been the greatest let down ever. Even if the game was 'good', I was hoping it would be 'brilliant' after the flawed gem that was Morrowind. Instead, it was fun for a quick playthrough but got boring soon afterwards. It really was the art design and bland story that let it down, most of the rest was fine.

Borderlands was my biggest recent letdown, but in retrospect I guess I was expecting the wrong things. The difference between Diablo 2 and Borderlands was the former had a plot people actually cared about, whereas the later just had a half-assed story used to frame the shooting.
