This reminds me of the movie Shooter. I like that movie, so this guy's achievement is awesome.
I remember that moive - for me it was one you watch, you enjoy watching, then almost instantly forget about it, never to mention it again. Except now of course.

OP: Pretty good shot!

Did you guys know about Simo Hayha before the cracked article? There's bound to be better snipers somewhere in history... only they were so awesome they were never found.

Kudos to that guy, though. I have enough problems at short ranges...
There are plenty who are well known, if you do the right reading. Like Carlos Hathcock, a US Marine in Vietnam. Before Furlong and now Harrison, Gunnery Sergeant Hathcock set the record for distance kill using, get this, a scoped Browning M2 .50cal machine gun with tripod that he'd carry instead of his rifle.
My head was about to explode, I had to read through 3 pages on a sniper thread before "Lông Trắng du Kich" was even mentioned. Thats Vietnamese for "White feather sniper" which describes Gunny Hathcock. Ever seen the movies where one sniper shoots another through their scope? Hathcock is the only one to ever pull that off. He also advocated the .50 BMG as a sniper round, so you can thank him for the Barrett M82. Greatest sniper ever.

What a nice little black and white world you live in. Go Team Good Guys etc.

Do you honestly think every fighter in Afganistan is a terrorist? Most are just doing what their people have always done when they've been invaded by a foreign force. I'm sure they hate the US and UK, just like they hated the Soviets before that, and the British Empire before them.
I must've read it wrong, I swear I remember reading that they were members of Al'Qaeda, my apologies.

Is that the one that they use to kill tanks?

I still say the most awesome sniper was the guy in WW2 who fought off the Russians, forget his name. Used iron sights and racked up over 700 kills.
Vasilij Zajtsev

But just for your information, russians knew how to "make" heroes. With planes for example, they were identifying the best and most aggresive pilots. Then they were given entire wings of more passive ones, tasked mainly with protecting the hero who was stacking up kills. For a hero to live longer than a usuall soldier, extraordinary measures were needed.

Impressive. I bet this guy owns every single video game shooter when not on duty.

To those denouncing this man as a "murderer" what do you want him to do? Throw flowers are the insurgents shooting at his squad mates? This is war people, whether or not you agree with the reasoning behind it is moot. The soldiers over there have two options : Kill or be killed.

On Topic : That is a pretty crazy shot. Simo Hayha may have the quantity but there is something to be said about quality shots too.

The British army is probably the best trained army in the world, but the American one is the best, dominating in numbers and firepower.

Wait, that guy was Russian!
I am fairly positive he meant Simo Hayha, since it seems illogical for a sowjet sniper to fight off Russians. But he was a good one though (not to mention his face reminds me of that guy from Scrubs... you know, the one with hypochondria).

That is pro. Shame it wasn't another Canadian though. I prefer a Canadian to a Brit having the record.
Hey, he only broke the record by accident... we here in Britain actually have a policy to not make everyone else on the planet look obsolete so we try not to excel on the world stage. We figured we had our time in the limelight when we, you know, controlled the world.

So what I am saying is, he got lucky with the whole "breaking the record" thing... If he were trying to break the record he could have done it from much further away... Guns are more powerful in the hands of British soldiers, were do you think they got the idea for Juggernaut game modes? :D
ditto. :D

Ugh. You people make me sick.

If he had done that anywhere other then Afghanistan you'd all be denouncing him as a murderer.

But no, because he did it in the land-of-people-it-is-officially-okay-to-kill we should all be congratulating him on his marksmanship.

Oh hey, I hear that the Washington snipers [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_sniper] were pretty good shots too. Definitely should of got medals.
You can't 'murder' another soldier during a war. Look at the law, it's right there.
It's not the legality that get's under my skin. Nor even the morality.

It's the hypocrisy.

Tell me, what would your response have been if the original post was about a Taliban sniper killing Brits or Americans from extraordinary distances? Would you have said, "Oh well done that man, I hope he gets a medal"?

Incidentally, I'm not just asking that question for the sake of making a point. I'm actually curious.

I suggest you find out where murder is legal. If you are an executioner, it's legal. If it's in self defence, it's legal. If it's a battlefield, it's legal. So, of course.
See above. Same question to you.

Correction, he killed a TERRORIST. They don't count as humans, in my eyes.
An insurgent isn't the same as a terrorist. They're a type of rebel, if anything.
The bottom line is that they are being occupied by the US/Brits/Allies. Our objective on paper being to pacify the region and install friendly, or at least "non radical" goverments in the region, and defend them until such a time as we feel they can support themselves. Whether you agree with this plan or not (and I don't for my own reasons) that's pretty much what we're doing.

These insurgents are both Rebels AND Terrorists who are trying to destabilize the goverment we've installed. Right, wrong, or even the correct approach to the problems that spawned this are more or less irrelevent. The bottom line is that he's an enemy in an armed conflict.

Going back to an article here about how they wanted to train our troops to be more sensitive to foreign outlooks and emotional displays and such using RPGs of a sort, I see the whole issue of "OMG, he killed a human being" as being part of the entire reason why you don't do something like this. It's also why when fighting a war, the goverment should invoke emergency powers like in World War II, limit the press for the duration of the conflict, and do whatever is nessicary to demonize the enemy.

Oh sure, in absolute terms he DID kill someone's baby. But at the same time this was as "good" a kill as you get since apparently these guys were armed and everything. Besides this guy also got nearly killed with a shot to his head, and apparently had both arms broken during the war. That sort of puts things into perspective, the conflict isn't entirely one sided.

A medal would be pushing it, but this guy definatly deserves the notation for longest range confirmed kill.

Now if only American Snipers would get motivated. It's gone from a Canadian to a Brit! We need to take the record!
