I really hate to drag Fallout 3 into this, but that is the exact reason why I don't want Bethesda making a Fallout game.
Have you had a look at what Betheseda is putting in Fallout 3? So far confirmed is drugs, gore, cannibalism, sex and decapitation. It's even banned in Australia, which means I'll have to order an overseas version. I have faith they'll make it quite messy and therefore fun.

Anyway. back to TES 5. Here's what they should have:

Put Morrowind style fast travel back in.

Greater variety of weapons and spells.

Better effects with spells. If a third party modifier (Midas, for example) can make freezing and burning spells where you actually see burns and stuff, Betheseda should as well.

Equipment that makes sense for NPCs

Put us back in a strange land where people live in trees and fight wierdass dogs and flying jellyfish. 'Cept don't put Cliff Racers back in. God no... I'm not saying put us back in Morrowind but at least not in 'generic english-style fantasy land'

More voice actors

A changing and Dynamic world. Things like seasons and aging would be awesome. This is a bit big but, seeing new towns/dungeons/forests be made and destroyed thoughout the game would be amazing.

Give the player more power. Allow the player to force people to do his bidding, or inspire them to follow him.

Werewolves. Need I say more?

Pilotable Boats. I loved the pilotable boat mods for Morrowind and Oblivion. Gave you a sense of power and freedom on the water.

Ownership of more than houses and guilds. Maybe become the mayor of a town, or the iron fisted new Emperor of Tamriel.

Dragons. It's generic fantasy but dammit I want to see a real dragon in TES. M'qiad talks about them, Akatosh is a dragon god and there's statues of Dragons scattered around the games so I know they exist.

And finally... destructable environments!
Battlefield: Bad Company has it and it is bad ass indeed
Thing is, in Morrowind you actually killed the dude who was "the big man" of the werewolves didn't you? So putting werewolves in again would fuck up the storyline.

Now for my suggestions: Werewolves! Fuck the storyline I don't care I want them in the damn game(Also, clans for it, quests etc), better vampires(Clans, quests etc not just become one and not be able to walk when the suns on the sky if you don't feed).

Better animations in 3rd person mode. A bit of a longer main quest...

Liches in the game!(Theres a damn mod in Oblivion that lets you to become a Lich. I mean if a Moder can do that you could too Bethesda).

Look at all the mods that have been created over the past years, if Bethesda would combine those mods whit Oblivion that could basicly create The Elder Scrolls 5. Heck some mods even give you more quests etc.

~I was disapointed in the size of Oblivion. Overall size should be bigger. NPC's could definitely use some work.

~Get rid of the "Fast Travel" system. When you're starting to get into the game, and you realize "o darn, I have to go to the other side of the map" I believe a system of public transportation like in Morrowind is better than the "Fast Travel" where the whole idea is that " eh, though I want to travel there, I really don't want to watch it." Public Transportation is definitely the way to go there.

~Bring back Levitation, Polearms, and the other array of weaponry prevalent in Morrowind, with mounted combat, and I think it will be a winner. I'll probably play it one way or the other though....I do love that series.

I think they should let the quest be more open, I mean they kind of pigeon hole you into only playing the guild they want you to play, what if I wanted to be a necromancer instead of a simple mage, or what if I wanted to join the blackwood company over the fighters guild, there were other quests too where I went, "hey why can't I do it that way, or join the bad guys", for a game that's supposed to be an open non-linear world, the quests leave a lot to be desired.

We need more performance from the NPCs. The lack of voice and line variety combined with their stiff faces was amusing at first, but quickly make me skip all the lines and look up the quest details in my journal. I also think that it would be interesting if the strains between the Khajits and the Argonians were played up, so that they would sometimes end up fighting in the streets, or leading militias against other towns. And maybe if you could help with one side, the others would end up hating you and coming after you if you dare bring up the subject.

Also, the way that the 3rd person mode makes my character look... it's embarrassing.

I would also like to see more emotion in the game, with the corresponding physical attributes that go with said emotion.

You didn't like Oblivion's music? I thought it was terrific.
It was repetitive. Very VERY much so, imo.

~Bring back Levitation
They made the towns in separate "cells" from the outside world, so if you levitated outside the town into the countryside, the game would melt

Combat, assassinations, no invincible guards, armor and weapons, more music, actual physics.

the combat is absolutely horrible. I don't even want to explain it it's so horrible.

assassinations, as in a sneak hit with a blade killing someone. I'm not absolutely sure if that doesn't already work but I don't remember it.

I want to be able to kill every guard. I know there is atleast one invincible guard in the game that does nothing special.

I don't like the best armor you can get being on everyone as soon as you hit a certain level. I want there to be rare armor that could be sold for a large sum and is light years ahead of the standard armor.

There's no way there is more than 10 songs.

The physics suck. hitting a glass object should destroy it, not move it slightly.

lets see again:

the ability to you know, not go on with the stroy for bit. Side quests are nice, but what about other things, such as being a ble to grow your own plants, set up a shop or something similar.

not fast travel. mark/recall and a silt strider esque system is all you need.

the ability to toggle level scaling on/off.

realistic drops. If I kill a person with a magic sword, I expect to get that sword.

the ability to open the visors on some helmets.

being hit by a horse should send things flying, maybe an animal skill that your horse reacts to and makes wild creatures less likely to aggro?

axes and short blades back please.

dual wielding please, I want to be able to wield 2 knives at once.

throwing weps should make a return.

the ability to buy things like tents.

destructable scenery (to a limit, e.g a fireball burns down a thatched cttage, but just scorches a brick house)

the ability to commandeer a boat or silt strider, giving the player more freedom.

highwaymen. 'nuff said.

just my 2 cents, say what you will about them.

Here's a few things I want in Elder Scrolls V: Whatever They Decide To Call It:

1. ALL of the Empire. Not just Tamriel or Morrowind, but the whole empire. Vvardenfell, Black Marsh, Tamriel, Morrowind, Skyrim, Hammerfell, Sommerset Isle, the whole thing. Maybe even Akavir, if the place is still around. Elder Scrolls V is going to be regarding the ENTIRE empire and its possible downfall, so let's see everything.

2. Bethesda's trademark "never break eye contact" NPC interaction. It felt really unrealistic in a heavily realism-based game, magic notwithstanding. And then it came back in Fallout 3 and I still hated it.
-2.1: The "Conversation Pie". This needs to be outlawed. It was just annoying and frankly asinine.
-2.2: More than one voice actor for every two races. Orcs and Nords all had the same voices, as did all elves and Khajits and Argonians. This is why I usually played a Redguard or Breton, just to get some sort of racial diversion. Maybe get 5 or 10 different voice actors for a certain race.

3. Fix spells. Spellcasting is fun and seeing an enemy go flying ten feet in the air from a fireball to the nads is great fun, I'm glad we're agreeing on that. But here are some suggestions to fix spells:
-3.1: Fewer asinine spells. Having a different spell to cure diseases and poisons was completely annoying. Plus, you only ran into poisons and diseases seldomly, at best. Yes, it's nice to have Cure Disease when you're running headlong into a vampire lair, but that's about the only time I can think of when you would need it.
-3.2: Make magic level up faster. Leveling your magic skills in Oblivion was almost insultingly long and grind-y, considering how I like being a spellwarrior in that game. Plus, magic spells were all bewilderingly piss-weak. I mean, you're creating something from nothing! That's gotta be worth something!
-3.3: Make spells scale damage/healing. This way you get one spell, it lasts the entire game, and you don't have to keep wasting gold to buy new spells. Yes, keep the diverse ones like in Conjuration for summoning different creatures, but make them scale with your skill. Like at Conjuration skill 20, your Summon Skeleton gets you a Skeleton, but at 40, you get a Skeleton Guardian. Or your Illusion skill will determine the amount of visibility reduction you get from a Chameleon spell.

4. Dual-wielding. Elder Scrolls seems to be one of the few series where you're the stalward hero of the land capable of wielding a big sword and obviously not stupid enough to go running around without a shield, but for those of us who like the stealth gameplay, what about dual-wielding smaller weapons, like daggers?

5. Shield abilities. If you're going to have a shield, why not make it more useful instead of just making it so you don't get an arrow through your face? Let us go on the offensive with our shield, like a shield-bash ability? That way you could also let us use shield spikes to increase our damage with that!

6. Have the big-name-voice-actor-du-jour live throughout the entire course of the game. Bethesda has a horrible habit of killing great, big-name voice actors by making them die horrible deaths in their games. Elder Scrolls IV did it to Patrick Steward, Fallout 3 did it to Liam Neeson (though admittedly his life expectency as an in-game NPC that you interact with is signifigantly longer than Capt. Picard), and I'm sick of seeing these perfectly-cast actors get killed by assassins, Super Mutants or jerks.

7. New factions. Yes, it's good to see the Fighter's and Mage's Guilds, Thieves' Guild and Dark Brotherhood running around, but let's see some new factions! For example, how about a faction of real necromancers (I.E., those necromancers who actually do what necromancers are supposed to do, communicate with the dead and carry out their will so they can rest in peace) who have you kill off other necromancers (the bad ones who raise the dead)? This way you could tie Mannimarco into them, since he's sort of the "king" of necromancers. Yes, you kill him in ES4, but to quote Skarvald the Constructor in World of Warcraft's Utgarde Keep instance (forgive the extreme nerdiness, even for this thread, please), "what sort of necromancer lets death stop him?" And while I'm on the subject of new factions...
-7.1: Continued interaction with factions/warring factions. After you complete the faction quests in ES4, you really only stop by there to pick up money or enchant gear. And frankly, it's annoying that you sink X number of hours into these factions only to have them be little more than your personal gold-farming service.

8. More perks from skills and some skills earlier. Instead of giving us perks every 25 points in a skill, why not 20? For example, in armoring, why not let us work with magic items sooner? It would certainly be less grind-y.

9. Leveling up and skill system. Now, this irks me probably the most of all. And here's why:
-9.1: Leveling magic. It takes forever. Especially Restoration and Destruction, keeping in mind the annoying amount of spells you get which do virtually the same thing but slightly more damage or healing. Annoying.
-9.2: You have to sleep to raise your level. Who thought of this, and why is he not dead? This is a horrible idea, and I'm glad Bethesda removed it for Fallout 3.
-9.3: The "point distribution" system. You get points in certian skill areas (Strength, Intelligence, etc.) from using certain skills. Melee skills net you strength, stealth skills earn you agility, it's just a hassle and it encourages grinding skills endlessly and wasting valuable gameplay time. Make it more like Fallout 3, where you get maybe 50 attribute points at the start of the game to distribute on scales of 1 to 10 in your attributes and when you level up, you get X number of skill points that you place into improving your major skills, Y for minor skills and Z for the other skills.
-9.4: Major and Minor skills. Making skills "major" and "minor" was something I saw in Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, so I thought I'd see about re-working that. At the start of the game, all your skills are set to 10, and major skills are immeditately set to 35, minor skills are set to 20.
-9.5: Only leveling major skills levels up your character. This is a terrible, horrible idea and it needs to be killed.
-9.6: Conclusion on leveling. All the leveling problems will go away if you remember 5 words: Make It Like Fallout 3. Fallout 3 had a great leveling and skill system, and it should be copyrighted by Bethesda and they should use it in all their games for the rest of eternity.

10. Vampirism and Lycanthropy. Being a vampire or a lycanthrope (werewolf) is cool, but the minuses are so severe with vampires and I never got to become a werewolf because I never played that far into ES3, so why not incorporate both and scale back some of the vampire weaknesses? Like, wearing certain clothing will shield you from the sun. Maybe you could even make factions for vampires and werewolves that you could only access as one or the other! That'd be cool. And of course, you can't cure it. You decided to get stupid and not cure your porophyic hemophilia or save so you could play through as a vampire or not as a vampire, and so you should be forced to stomach the consequences for the rest of the game. Screw you. No de-vampiring for you!

11. The way the game starts. I don't want to start out as a prisoner! I'm innocent, I tells ya! Elder Scrolls IV was annoying because Valen Dreth wasn't in your cell and you couldn't punch the crap out of him (despite how much fun it was to get revenge on him in the Dark Brotherhood quest). Maybe start out as you being a small child who becomes an apprentice to some job, like a mason or a smith or something, I'm just suggesting. Actually, copyright that in case I ever make a game, that's how I want it to start.

12. More journeys into the realms of the daedric princes. Oblivion is a big place, and we've only really seen Mehrunes Dagon's land of fire and death and Sheogorath's delightful world of madness, so let's see some more!

13. Enchanting gear. You can only put one enchantment on your armor and about a billion on weapons. This sucks! I want my unstoppable super-badass fishing waders of water walking, water breathing, shielding and elemental immunity that have the power to give me 40 health and carry an extra 30 pounds and increase my resistance to all weapons! Though I will admit, I loves me my soul-sucking sword that does fire, frost and shock damage...

14. The encumberance system. When you're over-encumbered, you can't even MOVE? That is crap! Who designed that, and why has he not been sacrificed to the volcano god?!

15. Dwarven technology. It was a big thing in ES3, and was barely even worth mentioning in ES4, I guess we were still riding high on the Orlando Bloom as Legolas fad, much as I want to swap out that "d" with a "g." Still, more dwarven tech.

16. Guns and crossbows. Ok? More options for long-range combat. Blades has swords and daggers, blunt has maces and axes (though I never knew why, they axes have a bladed edge...), let's give long-range combat a second option or a third option.

17. More ownership. Let us own businesses and boats. Maybe shipping industries.

Wow, that's more complaining than I thought I would do, but still, got the job done.

After reading through most of the post on this thread, it's apparent that the biggest complaints are about immersion elements ie. stiff npc's, repetitious voice acting, pop up graphics... I'm going to put a list of sustains and improves together, because overall, I had a blast with the game, and it was the 360 version with litle to no mods to rival that of the pc version. Part of the 'problem' is the gamer here: This is an RPG, and before I get into my level scaling comment, I want everyone here to nod in agreement about that fact. It's an RPG, not an FPS. RPG's are designed to tell stories, not really to challenge players. If you want the pwnage satifaction of an FPS, go play CoD, Shadowrun, Team Fortress, Halo etc. If you are looking for a big sandbox or a storytelling experience, look for an RPG.

I played through Oblivion about 4 times, but my fourth character was just for goofing off and running around naked punching daedroths in the face. After pretty much seeing every questline, monster, item, location, I would say that my improves are:

1. Fix the repetive dungeon environments.

2. Give me a real reason to actually want to buy all the houses and pimp them out other than simply being able to store things in different containers and show off all my items in fancy display cases to no one but myself.

3. Someone else touched on it, but the level scaling is a cheap out way to balance the difficulty. Could require a total re-engineering of the leveling because after playing it through the 2nd time, I knew how to manipulate the leveling system so well that it made it too easy to become godlike.

4. The horses are stupid if you can't fight from their backs because ultimately, it's faster to fast travel most of the time, than it is to go back to where I left the horse and ride it to the destination. Besides, once you get Shadowmere, you can knock him out store things in his unconcious body, and because he's a unique NPC he regains conciousness and you can ride him or knock him out again at any point to retrive your goods you stored on him, making all other horses obsolete and all 'feather on self' spells obsolete too since you now have an immortal mule that happens to run faster than any other horse on Tamriel.

5. The Greater and Lesser Powers your character has depending on the race you choose should either be godlike with a nerfed recharge time, or instead just be mildly helpful as a low level spell that you can use more frequently as a signature of you character. Some of the abilities you gain from your birthsign are simply worthless, while others were simply permanent stat increases.

6. Tamriel needs to be designed dynamically so that when a hero (me) is running around killing daedra with his bare hands, you should automatically command a certain type of respect/fear with locals who have heard of your exploits! Seriosly, I'm taking down groups of daedra with my fists and I still have to haggle with some twat merchant for a little bit better a deal on a loincloth?!?! F that! I just dropped a monster with my fists in less than an in-game minute and you wanna argue with me over 15 Septims? Lolz, they gotta be kidding...

7.Vampirism was more of a hinderance than a privelege. Fix that or omit it completely. Leaving it in the game like it is is just lame.

8. I want minions that do something, not just disappear for a few in-game days, only to return and have failed a mission to kill ONE person in the name of Sithis. On that note, by the time I can afford the pirate hideout and buy all the things that went with it, I didn't really need anymore passive income so it immediately became obsolete.

9. The armor/weapons scaling is lame, and just sort of makes me ambivilent when looting high level corpses since it all just gets a blanket "Daedric" adjective added to it when you reach a certain level. Instead of scaling the armor and monsters per the character level, leave the world open to free roaming, but have areas that are filled with monsters you cannot realistically defeat so that you have to aviod certain areas of the game until you are actually tough enough to go explore there. I got annoyed at exploring an ayelid ruin as a level 4, where I fight rats and baseline zombies, only to return to the same ruins later to see its beastiary populated with spider daedra or lich kings or something just because that was the level scaling just swapping the monsters out to accomodate me. I'd rather accomodate the game, which helps my immersion, rather than have the game accomodate me. Otherwise I can just do whatever I want, without having to say " I think I'm outmatched, better come back when I'm stronger."

10. Someone touched on not being enough stealth stuff. Well, apparently you never created armor or rings that give you % of chameleon. If you make a few pieces of gear that give you %'s of chameleon and wear enough of them at the same time to get a total of >100% chameleon, you never have to worry about anything seeing you again.

11. The bow system needs no tweaking, because when you get your skill to 100 in it, you pretty much can just toy with enemies because you automatically paralyze them or knock them down with every other hit you land, so to whoever was saying the archery was weak, apparently you never maxed your skill out, so go back and do that. I'll wait...... Done? Good. Now don't you agree that the bow skill is just fine how it is? Lolz...

Sustain: Pretty much all the other elements of the game. There was a good reason I played it through 4 times :)

I have a little news on TES 5 front. May have already been posted but wth.

I quote, "Elder scrolls V will be set in the far northern land of Skyrim."

It will be released well into 2010, so a bit of a wait im afraid.

I'd like them to wait until computers have advanced a bit more memorywise, so they can do the whole continent justice. For the moment I think it's fine for them to do single countries.
