I, too, burn with an undying desire for the golden star badge! Or at least to learn what the bloody hell you get it for!!!
I imagine Xitel, Galletea, and Fanboy earned theirs through their "Holiday Council" dealy somehow... sadly, I am nowhere near as innovative or talented

I've dubbed the bearers of Thanks! Badges the 'Secret Cult of the Golden Star'.
Of course, the answer will (probably) come in due time, but it's bugging me. I feel like I'm missing out on something big, and I want to be a part of it.

That's my problem. A lot of people with these badges, I can't understand why. If people were genuinely 'earning' it, Anarchemitis, NewClassic, Labyrinth, Ultrajoe and a few more than that would have said badge.xitel said:

More and more are appearing, and for seemingly no reason. That's what I want explained.

On the Boardgame Geek, I have over 200 of them, and although we can only show a LIMITED amount of them, it's kind of neat to earn them over time as you participate. I don't have any contributor placards to put around my avatar (because I don't donate money - although if you ask Octavian, I often help out the moderators) but maybe one day I'll do it just so I look like EVERYONE else.

Frankly, I don't care about badges. Sure, getting a Thanks! or a Pony badge probably would give me some sort of pride, but I'm not going to try explicitly for any of those. If the staff feels I'm deserving, they can give me.
But I think a badge-thread such as this would probably cut down the numbers of "How to Get X Badge?" threads.
