It would be pretty hard to have this all work out, especially since so many people probably play the same instrumentsm, but if you're coordinating this I think it can happen. My capabilities are acoustic guitar, electric bass, and vocals (not just hip-hop, but I can do that too) as far as recording goes. I've been looking for a reason to get a new mic setup anyways.

Hmm, I don't know exactly how that would work but the idea interests me. What exactly are you proposing we do? covers? original music? I think the main issue would be getting everyone to play something that times up with everyone else. Whoever organizes it would have to make a midi file for each person or something to that nature to avoid confusion, which would probably turn out to be a lot of work for them. I dunno, it might work, and i will admit, it would be pretty cool if we could pull it off.

When I got this PM I collapsed in tears from the mass of quotes.
I was thinking about organising a user group an Escapist band a while back, but I never got round to putting said idea into action. Besides, despite doing an AS Level in Music Technology, I have yet to be allowed to mix a recording.

I really like the idea of an Escapist band, though. Would make for quite a fun project, which was pretty much the main reason why I drum. If we can manage to get a few recordings down, I reckon it will be brilliant to be a part of.

I have a Roland, electric drum kit. So recording drums is fairly straight forward(and fairly real sounding) for me. The problem being...my drum skills are entry level, check my 2 vids to see what I mean...I think Muse is going to be beyond my drum capability.
Meg White and Ringo Star have gotten by perfectly well with simple rythmns. Timing is really the only necessity when it comes to drumming, complexity can come over time as it does with every other instrument.

There haven't been any drum players yet... but I'm sure they're out there.
Sup.

I would mention my gear currently, but it's far too late in the United Kingdom of Great Britainland, so I'll leave it until the morning. But to summarise, my main kit's a Mapex V Series Fusion Kit and I have recently set up a Yamaha DTExplorer Electronic Drum Kit. I'll upload a few more videos tomorrow of me and my acoustic kit to give you an idea of what I can do, and I may be able to get some recordings of my electronic one done by Thursday at the earliest (I'm missing some adaptors for the recording to work).

My only concern really is sound quality: to get a decent drum kit recording you need at least two dynamic microphones for overheads and one condenser microphone for the bass drum, this is ignoring mics for other necessary drums like snare and select toms; I have my mum's camera and a microphone on my laptop that's too sensitive to record anything loud. Another choice we have is that I'm currently attempting to make my electronic drumkit record onto my laptop, if I can make it do that, then we should get a better quality recording.

As well as drums I can offer very very very basic piano, and that's about it.

This is awesome! I'll post some blues jams some time!

EDIT: I am also a drummer, maybe when I'm hope for thanksgiving I'll record a couple beats (and a solo, just to show what I can do) and share with y'all!

I think this is a fantastic idea, two suggestions though. One is that if we're gonna assign a tune, we need to assign a metronome setting to it, make whoever's mixing/editing the whole thing together's life a whole lot easier. Also, instead of YouTube, I'd suggest something along the lines of Rapidshare where people would just upload the .wav files so that whoever's working this could have all of them in nice quality.

NOTE: I know that the long list of quotes is offputting and it shouldn't be done in that way. However, if you quote someone within a spoiler box the message to say they've been quoted doesn't send. It's an interesting glitch, so until it's fixed this is the only way to mass quote someone to bring them into a discussion. Thankyou for your understanding.

Firstly, if I've missed anyone who has posted a video I'm very sorry. I think I've gotten everyone though.

Basically the reason I've mass quoted you is to ask if you would be interested in joining myself and Ravens Nest in the idea of making an Escapist Band. Basically we'd all record our own respective instruments and Raven can mix them all together to make a coherent song out of it. If you don't want too that's fine, but if you're interested that's really cool!

The reason I've done it this way rather than a mass PM is I think this is the sort of thing which requires a lot of discussion, such as who plays what bit, what song we do, how we upload and mix it etc, hence discussing it on here would probably work better than through PM's going everywhere. (Note: If quoting people en mass is the wrong thing to do I apologise but it seemed the most logical step to take with this particular endeavour).

So please let me know your thoughts on this idea and if you're up for it. Hopefully we can actually make it happen, that would be an amazing event to have happen to the Escapist!

I'd be up for it if we can get something sorted. It might be a better diea to separate people into bands, based on their style, or something like that, because trying to record a 20 person song might get a little hectic, but four or five individual bands would still sound fantastic, and be a little more manageable.

Yeah... Umm.. SHK had the Escapist Band idea a few Months ago, it never really got anywhere though.

I don't think I'll be able to do anything, I finish uni this week so I loose access to all the (free) recording gear. I'll be happy to try arranging some stuff though, to make sure we are all playing the same thing. For the other band I started arranging a version of Autumn Leaves for two basses, 3 vocals and a violin.

So yeah.. Hit me up if you need me =)

If I can steal my sister's camera and find a good song to cover, I'll post some drum and possibly bass videos for you guys.

I'm certainly willing to try and play my part... but my recording software, to say the least, is not up to par. I'm more than willing to try something though. I have a feeling we'll get like 15 guitar players, 6 singers, 8 drummers, and something like 9 singers (maybe a few horn players too) and yes that is more than the people quoted/contacted here, but I figure a lot of people play more than 1 instrument.

Like I said, I'm down, but I can't guarantee an amazing quality product from my end.

I'd be up for it. I've even got an electric violin which can record directly into my computer.. for when I can be bothered. You know how it is I'm sure.

What sort of music are we talking here? I'd like to start up a Zombie Metal band..

Incidentally, I can do both vocals and strings.

Well, I like the idea of making an Escapist Band. I actually have equipment to be able to record with. It might just work though!

I'm not going to mass quote you guys again. What will happen is I'll PM you this time, but whilst we're organising it the onus will be on you guys to check the thread every so often to see what is happening, unless I need to contact you speficially.

Ok, this is what I think is best at the moment (other ideas are welcome).

I'll be the main organiser of this idea, so if anyone has questions or suggestions please either PM or quote me and we'll sort it out. Raven's Nest has already volunteered to mix them on a program, so unless anyone else wants to do that I guess we'll be emailing the relevant data to him. Quirkytamborine suggested that we use .wav files or something to save on space and make it easier, and to me that sounds like a great idea but it depends on what Raven's (or others) software will allow. I've seen that you can download mp4 versions of the movies you upload to youtube so we might be able to do that, convert it into a wav file using itunes or something and go from there. But these are things we need to work out.

Choosing a song is the next issue, and with that comes the distribution of sheet music and the like. I only look up sheet music for piano so I'm not sure about guitar tabs or similar, but I know you guys will have a very good idea of what is going on there. Seeing as this is a democracy I think we should all decide on what song to play together, and to answer your question guitarmasterx7 I guess most of our stuff will be covers, unless we get good at the logistics of this and are confident enough to make something original.

Given how many of you responded, I'm thinking it's probably best to split you into multiple bands. How this is going to happen I haven't figured out yet, and it doesn't feel right to say "you go with them". There'll have to be some process to working that out, but I'm not sure yet, suggestions welcomed. It also means we could produce multiple songs at once which would be really cool.

I'm guessing most of the correspondance will be via this thread or PM (I've already noticed I'm not allowed to send more than 10 in 5 minutes which is annoying but understandable). The logistics of this are insanely huge, but it is achievable, and I know that we can make it work and sound great.

The first thing we need to do is organise you into bands and choose songs. Therefore, I suggest that we figure out how we're going to do those things. So....

1. Please suggest how you think we should organise the various groups.

2. Please suggest a song you would like to play.

Once we have a list of suggestions we'll take it from there. First steps first.

Edit: I'm sorry about making you cry Zombie_Fish!

I'd also like you to list exactly what instruments you can play, I'll take all the info down and figure it out. Thankyou!

300lb. Samoan suggests we make a user group for this thread considering the logistics of it, what do others think?

I don't have any recording equipment (let alone decent recording equipment), but I could go Vocals (tenor) and Clarinet. If you need any of those.

I also play the piano, but I'm not the greatest player.
