The police, at the highest authority, is good. They're there to keep us safe, to try and prevent crimes and to solve the crimes that have been committed. However, at their lowest authority, they can be corrupt and can cause large problems for the police force.

I generally have good faith in the entity of the police force, but an individual officer can be out of line and 'corrupt' so the individual should be fought, not the entity.

I don't trust the cops in my town at all. They're all ass holes and harass teenagers and young adults for no good reason.

They are just people like everyone but I hope that what they do is right and that they do as/what they are supposed to. I am trying to become a cop and hope I get into the academy. A bit over a year until I will do my first attempt.

Any cop is just as fallible as the next guy. They all have the potential to make a bad name for cops in general.

However the cops have saved my life twice with prompt responses and taking the right courses of action, for sure I would be dead right now without em. From my experience the system is mostly working as well as it can.

i used to be a very strong supporter of the police, but after many of the recent incidents (largly in relation to the student protests)i have completely changed my point of view, there are to many abusing there powers and the laws, hiding behind there badges is appaling, i have been recently assaulted by an officer when i was protesting (no i wasnt rioting, nor was i abusing the police officers in anyway), when a group of officers barged us backwards into a group and i was hit by a riot shield.
i can nolonger accept them as the peacekeppers they are suppose to be

While police can make mistakes I feel one thing needs to be pointed out.

Shooting something with a real gun IS a big deal and you can get in loads of trouble even if you do it appropriately. So a cop isn't just going to shoot a dog for no reason. That's retarded and if you think that sort of thing happens you live in a retarded world.

Everyone makes mistakes, don't support a law simply because it's a law, and work to change things that need to be changed. Still, taking out your hatred of laws and government on a guy who is just trying to maintain order and prevent crimes makes you the bigger dick.

We've got some nice coppers where I live. Even when they turned up looking for a certain undesirable, thieving little bastard with mp5s sitting neatly in their holsters they made a polite phone call requesting the door to be opened. Aforementioned bastard was a.w.o.l so we ended up just talking, so in my experience our locals are decent people with their mind on the job.

I wouldn't mind joining the force myself.

I've never had any run ins with the police, good or bad. Regardless of that, I'm sure they're perfectly capable of doing their job.

I think that, as people, they have flaws like anyone else and are capable of making poor decisions or just being plain assholes.
That being said, I think people maintain this childish resentment of authority and take it out on cops. They expect them to be flawless decision makers and perfect at their job. They are people, and don't always do everything right. I was at the dentist's once and he struck a nerve in my gum. FUCK DENTISTS. (Note the thick sarcasm).
They have a difficult, dangerous and sometimes thankless job to do. I commend them for it.
I hope to be a cop myself one day, and if I do, I will try and bear in mind the criticisms people have of cops so I can be better at it.

Trust no one. If they can get another arrest under their belt or make a scene and get promoted, they'll do whatever it takes.

I have very little faith in the police ... especially when in my town there are rampant drug problems and they know where the deals are going down but they don't stop them. Great hypocrisy is constantly at work in such an occupation.

They're all different, they're good ones out there, obviously. But there are also crooked-cops out there as well.

In general I do trust that they do a good job. But with all of the unrest that increases to college fees are causing police are being caught doing stuff they would rather not came out due to the abundance of video cameras watching whats going on.

Riot police can sometimes get carried away with their battons, but if I was in their position how would I handle it?

I think you are intentionally confusing blindly defending the police with being unwilling to condemn someone based on a bad quality Youtube video with no sound.

People can opt to reserve judgment until such time as the truth of the matter has been established firmly, as they very well should.
WAT?! Innocent until proven guilty?! THAT'S NOT A THING!

Once a police officer whom I was straight up asking for help walked right by me. I didn't appreciate it. While I recognize that this was the actions of one officer and not the police as an entire unit, "to protect and serve" is usually printed on the badge.

In the defense of this officer, I wasn't in mortal danger. I just wanted to know why caution tape was blocking off all entrances to the road I lived on at the time. Turns out an electrical wire was down.

Over the past few days I have seen a lot of discussions involving a controversial incident and/or video to do with possible police misconduct. And I always seem to find a lot of escapists defend to officers and say "they are the law they must have had a reason"

Now while trusting the law to do right is important, it's also important to realise they are still people - people can always do wrong and have different senses of morals.

I personally have an uncle who is in the police and has worked on a misconduct incident within his own precinct to do with sabotage of evidence around a case where an aborted baby was involved. I'm a bit hazy on the details but it was a big incident (look it up, took place around Glasgow). He's also told me of several other incidents as well so I know not to trust all officers.

So escapists what are you thoughts/beliefs on your faith in the police and their actions?
I'll usually give the police the benefit of the doubt, simply because I've got family in that line of work and I know how they have to tippy-toe around with their hands tied behind their backs in order to not get sued for sneezing in uniform.

As to the wheelchair incident, I really do think people should watch the video again and actually see what's going on:

1) Kid's in the middle of the street. No one else is. Stands to reason he's not supposed to be there. In the middle of a street.

2) The cops are trying to wheel him out of the street, probably because he refused to do so himself. He's got the brake on his wheelchair, so it's not moving, but they're still trying. Hey, cops aren't familiar with wheelchairs, big deal.

3) The cop that "drags" the kid is trying to hold him in the chair while they wheel it. And then the kid dove for the ground. You can clearly see the cop being pulled along with him as he "falls."

4) Well, now you've got a crippled kid on the ground in the middle of the street. He's been non-compliant up to this point, and putting him back in the chair won't do any good. For his safety, you do what? That's right--you pull him out of the street, then bring the chair over, then sort it out when you're not in the middle of the damned street.

Kid took a dive on purpose. Cops were 100% in the right to do exactly what they did. Even this "condemning" video shows us exactly what happened, clear as day. It was the kid taking a fall to get some press.

I trust the police, but not blindly. We must uphold the law and respect the authorities. But authorities exist to serve the people and must refrain from abusing their powers. That´s not always the case.
